What Tools Does Disaster Response Use for Water Damage Clean-Up?

We only use the best equipment! With our extensive experience in the St. Petersburg restoration industry, we've acquired state-of-the-art tools designed to tackle a wide range of challenges. This experience has also allowed our technicians to identify which type of equipment is best for a particular situation. Some of the most common water damage restoration tools we use include:

Infrared

Infrared Cameras

Our infrared cameras give us the ability to see moisture in walls and ceilings that is not visible to the naked eye, almost like having "X-ray" vision. This capability allows us to detect and address trapped and hidden humidity, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.

Moisture

Moisture Meters

We use moisture meters to measure moisture levels in cellulose material. Before and after the drying process, we will conduct moisture readings in all areas of your property. If we detect moisture in an unaffected area of your building, we'll get to work quickly to dry it.

Air Movers

Air Movers

This equipment is designed to work in conjunction with our dehumidifiers. While our dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and convert it to a liquid, our Air Mover helps to circulate this moisture in the air so that the dehumidifier can effectively remove it.

Generators

Ozone Generators

These advanced tools enable us to cleanse affected surfaces and the air in a more effective manner. Ozone Generators work by causing oxygen molecules to implode, making them a valuable deodorization tool.

Xtractor

Xtreme Xtractor

This tool is great for tackling tough moisture after water damage. It allows us to apply direct pressure to a surface, like a carpet, that has soaked up water. The pressure helps draw out the water, making it easier to remove.

Top 3 Types of Water Damage You Should Know About

Water damage can strike without warning and can wreak havoc on your property, leaving you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or an overflowing appliance, your property needs immediate water damage clean-up in St. Petersburg, FL, to prevent further harm. Here are the top three types of water damage you should know about:

Clean Water Damage

Clean Water Damage

Clean

This type of water damage happens from a "clean" source, such as rainwater or a broken pipe in your home. It's easier to clean up than others on this list but can still cause extensive property damage when ignored.

Gray Water Damage

Gray Water Damage

Gray-Water

Gray water damage stems from appliances such as toilets without feces, washing machines, and dishwashers. Gray water sometimes contains bacteria and contaminants that can make you or your family sick.

Black Water Damage

Black Water Damage

Black-Water

The name alone indicates the severity of this type of water damage. It's caused by backed-up sewer lines, river flooding, and standing water that supports bacteria growth. Black water presents serious health hazards and needs to be handled by professional water damage contractors.

If you suspect your home or business has been damaged by one or more of the types of water above, take the following steps:

Stop the Source of Water
  • Be Safe: Turn off all electricity running through your property. Don't go near or touch any water you believe to be contaminated.
  • Stop the Source of Water: If you're able, put a stop to the water at its source. That way, you can prevent more damage.
  • Call Disaster Response: Contact our water damage company ASAP for water restoration services. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

Our Process for Water Damage Restoration in St. Petersburg, FL

Having a water damage restoration company by your side who knows how to remediate moisture is a key factor in getting your life back on track. At Disaster Response, we have refined our process over 40+ years of water damage clean-up experience. That way, we can provide customers with reliable, comprehensive service when they need it the most.

We utilize powerful pumps and vacuums to eliminate standing water from your property. Swift water removal is essential in minimizing damage and lowering the likelihood of mold growth. Our team is dedicated to ensuring efficient water extraction to prevent any additional complications.

After extracting water from your property, we dry and dehumidify the impacted areas. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to do so to eliminate moisture from walls, floors, and furniture. Proper drying helps prevent warping, swelling, and the growth of mold.

Whenever we deal with water damage, we have to address the potential contaminants and bacteria that can enter your home. We make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas to create a safe living environment. This involves cleaning carpets, upholstery, and personal belongings. Our technicians also use antimicrobial treatments to prevent mold and bacterial growth.

The final step in the process is the restoration of your home to its pre-damage condition. This comprehensive restoration process may encompass a range of tasks, from minor repairs such as replacing drywall and installing new carpeting to major reconstruction efforts. Rest assured that Disaster Response is fully equipped to manage all aspects of water damage restoration, from start to finish.

  • Maintenance: Have your business or home's roof, appliances, and plumbing inspected by professionals to spot early signs of wear and tear.
  • Water Alarms: If there is a flood or leak in your home, a water alarm can alert you so that you can take action immediately.
  • Drainage: Your home needs proper drainage systems in place at all times. To prevent water buildup, be sure to unclog your downspouts and gutters.
  • Cracks and Gaps: Be sure to seal up any cracks and gaps in your property's foundation to limit water from getting inside.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A St. Petersburg man was sentenced for running a $1.2 million fraud scheme while in Florida state prison, according to a U.S. Department of Justice news release.

Jared Borgesto Murray, 41, was sentenced to four years and nine months in federal prison for conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud.

He pleaded guilty to the charges on March 24.

Between January 2019 and September 2020, Murray orchestrated the fraud scheme while in state prison for a Pinellas County robbery conviction, the DOJ said.

From the state prison, Murray organized and directed the scheme targeting a nationwide merchant. He used dozens of customers’ store accounts at the merchant to fraudulently purchase products.

Murray and his conspirators sold the products online and retained the fraud proceeds, causing the merchant to lose $1,26 million.

Murray used multiple contraband phones that he had smuggled into the prison. He identified customers with merchant accounts and then called the merchant locations impersonating the customers to place orders for products using the customers’ open lines of credit, the DOJ said.

He and his co-conspirators then advertised the products for sale online at a discounted price. He communicated with potential buyers and sold the products from state prison via phone and email.

Murray and his conspirators arranged delivery of the fraudulently purchased products to the purchasers who paid them using wire transfers and mailed checks.

Then, Murray directed several individuals to pick up fraud proceeds or fraudulently obtained products.

He used some of the fraud proceeds and fraudulently purchased products to build a house in Lake Placid, Florida. The house was forfeited by law enforcement along with $43,550 in fraud proceeds seized from two of Murray’s bank accounts.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Having spent much of his childhood in Massachusetts in foster care, Jeff Allen Small knows firsthand all the good that the Toys for Tots Foundation does for children across the United States.

“It was a big part of my life in foster care,” Small told Patch. “In foster care, you rely on different groups in the community, like Toys for Tots, to give back to the foster care children.”

Now, as the lead bartender at the Tampa Bay Drinkery, a new Grand Central District piano bar that opened at 2756 Central Ave. in December, he’s organized a Christmas in July event to benefit the nonprofit organization.

“It hits my heart with all the families that I see in the world that are needing help,” Small said.

The event takes place July 26, 2 to 6 p.m. There will be drink specials, music by Scotty Wright and raffle prizes.

Everyone who donates a children’s gift to Toys for Tots will be given a ticket to enter the raffle.

See Also:

“The main thing is just getting toys for Toys for Tots, and not just toys, whatever they might need, clothes, toys, whatever, which is very important for families that are not able to give the greatest holiday to their kids,” he said.

He hopes the event becomes an annual fundraiser at Tampa Bay Drinkery, especially as there aren’t many Christmas in July events in St. Petersburg.

“It’s not something you see a lot around here,” Small said. “And I want to give back. St. Pete has been my home for 17 years.”

ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. — A family of three was struck by lightning on St. Pete Beach, officials confirmed Friday.

Authorities responded to the call near the Dolphin Beach resort near the 4700 block of Gulf Boulevard around noon.

In a Broadcastify recording of the scanner call, you could hear a dispatcher say, "Rescue 23, St. Pete Beach 501, electrocution..."

St. Pete Beach Deputy Fire Chief Adam Poirrier said crews arrived within three minutes to find a family of three who appeared to be struck by lightning while under an umbrella on the beach.

Our ABC Action News weather team says there were nearly 50 lightning strikes between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

"The lightning was going crazy," said beachgoer Isaac Martin.

In a scanner call, you could hear a man saying, "We’re having active lightning strikes in the area, we recommend all responders to enter their vehicles if they’re not actively involved in patient care."

Poirrier said that multiple units responded and assisted two adults who were treated on-scene and refused any additional medical treatment.

A 17-year-old girl was transported as a trauma alert to Tampa General Hospital, according to Poirrier.

Kyree Mejias and his family celebrate the 4th of July on St. Pete Beach every year. And on the 30th year of their tradition, he and his family tried to hunker down under their tent.

But then, Mejias said they felt the zap of a nearby lightning strike.

"People were starting to feel a different shock inside their bodies like my uncle, for example, had it from their face down to their arm," said Mejias.

Meanwhile, Martin and his girlfriend did find cover at a beach bar for a little over an hour. But he said once they tried to go back, they learned about a lightning strike on the beach – which he said was a little too close for comfort.

"I’ve never seen or heard of anybody getting struck by lightning like personally, but like I don't know that was right down the road, you know what I mean?" said Martin. "It was like a six-minute walk from where I was at, so it's kind of crazy."

For most adults, the entertainment chain Chuck E. Cheese brings childhood memories of singing animatronic critters, flashing video games, tickets and toys, and cheap pizza, or possibly grown-up memories of birthday parties and special nights for their own kids.

The company is tapping into that nostalgia with its new "Chuck's Arcade," a new arcade aimed at adults that combines the hottest new games like Jurassic Park, Halo and Connect Four Hoops alongside Gen X classics such as Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong and Centipede, according to a June 30 release.

"It’s where the classics meet the new-school players," the website says.

There are already 10 Chuck's Arcade locations at malls across the country, some of which were previously Fun Sport Arcades, including one at the Tyrone Square mall in St. Petersburg.

Three Florida hotels also boast versions of the Chuck's Arcade retro-style experience, according to chucke.fandom.com, including the Holiday Inn Resort Orlando Suites and the Marriott Village at Lake Buena Vista in Orlando and the Westgate Town Center Resort, where it's called the "Mystery Fun House Arcade."

Every location has a unique design and a different lineup of games, and each one is overseen by one of the classic animatronic characters like Chuck E. Cheese or one of the members from Munch’s Make Believe Band, the furry, relentless cheerful animatronic band that entertained or unnerved children for years before the company retired them in 2024.

“Chuck E. Cheese has spent decades mastering the arcade experience — it’s in our DNA,” David McKillips, Chuck E. Cheese CEO, said in a release. “Thanks to the expertise of our talented technicians and the successful transformation of almost 500 fun centers worldwide, we’ve built the operational and creative foundation to take our brand beyond our traditional four walls.

"Chuck’s Arcade is a natural evolution — an opportunity to extend our arcade legacy into new formats that engage both lifelong fans and a new generation through a curated mix of retro classics and cutting-edge experiences.”

Chuck E. Cheese makes moves to bring in grown-ups

As the iconic company nears its 50th anniversary, Chuck E. Cheese has been working to attract new audiences after a challenging period during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, the company launched a $300 million fun center remodel plan "to meet the active play needs of young children that improve their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being," the company said in a release.

Trampoline zones were added to many existing locations. A new birthday show was added to Chuck E,. Cheese's YouTube channel. In December 2023, a "grown-up menu" was introduced, featuring various pizza toppings, more complex wing sauces and rubs, meatballs in Sweet Chili, Spicy Korean BBQ, or Buffalo BBQ sauce, and three different types of cake.

Where are the Chuck's Arcade locations?

So far, there are 10, with another opening this month:

What is Chuck E. Cheese?

The place where "a kid can be a kid," the family entertainment giant began in the 1970s as Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Time Theater in San Jose, California, the passion project of Nolan Bushnell, co-founder of Atari.

The idea was to offer a single place for arcade and video games, food, music, and fun for kids and their grown-ups. If you were born since then, you probably went to at least one of the half-a-million birthday parties hosted there every year.

Aside from the endless rows of games, Chuck E. Cheese was known for its animatronic characters, which Bushnell said in interviews were inspired by the Enchanted Tiki Room and the Country Bear Jamboree at Disneyland.

He had an animatronic mascot built to entertain children while their pizza was cooking, which was supposed to be a coyote, until he got a closer look at the rat costume he'd actually bought. The more marketable Charles Entertainment Cheese was born.
