Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - This week is bringing us some of the hottest temperatures so far this year.

Like other cities, Augusta experiences the urban heat island effect, which is a phenomenon where urban areas absorb more heat then rural areas because of buildings, roads and other dark surfaces.

Tips on how to lower your power bill amid CSRA’s summer heat

On hot days, you may be running the air conditioner non-stop, and that means higher power bills. We talked with experts on how to save.

Augusta is known as one of the hottest spots in Georgia, and a study was done by UGA on the urban heat island effect in our area.

“Compared to other cities in Georgia, it’s bad. So it’s probably one of the worst in Georgia. So if you were thinking from a state perspective, where would you have the most impact in Georgia, Augusta would be a good place,” said Dr. Patricia Yager, director, Georgia Climate Project, UGA professor.

Grand jury subcommittee addresses issues at Richmond County jail

During their tour, documents say they became concerned about the kitchen area, mental health units, and showering areas.

Many trees were lost in Helene, and recently, downtown Augusta saw the remaining trees cut down.

The loss of trees in our city will worsen the urban heat island effect.

“If you add trees in Augusta, the trees that were there before Helene one or two years ago, were contributing to all kinds of good things, not just the temperature, water storm runoff, air pollution, and other things,” said Yager.

Excess heat in our environment can also lead to more health concerns.

Heat is really bad for the human body, and there is all kinds of data on both chronic illness due to heat and infectious diseases getting worse in the heat, waterborne diseases, tick, mosquito bites,“ said Yager.

Augusta Fire partners with Augusta Tech to launch new degree program

Beginning this fall, students can enroll in a five-term, 64-credit program at Augusta Tech.

Yager is working with the Greater Augusta Interfaith Coalition to create solutions to this growing problem.

Trees are obviously the number one solution, but not the solution for everywhere and everything, so they also talk about green roofs, cool roofs, cool pavements and smart growth," said Yager.

Augusta, GA (July 6, 2025) – An early morning accident involving injuries occurred Saturday at the intersection of Old Savannah Rd and Gordon Hwy in Augusta. The incident was reported around 5:16 a.m., according to local emergency alerts.

The specifics regarding the number of vehicles involved have not been released, but medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. The severity of the injuries and whether any individuals were hospitalized remain unconfirmed at this time.

Traffic in the area was affected as first responders managed the scene and launched an investigation into the crash. Authorities have not yet disclosed any details on citations or contributing factors.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this collision.

Early Morning Collisions in Augusta

Crashes occurring in the early morning hours, like the one at Old Savannah Rd and Gordon Hwy, are often influenced by limited visibility, fatigue, or impaired driving. These factors, combined with lighter traffic flow, can contribute to serious and unexpected collisions in residential and commercial zones.

This intersection is a known corridor for both local commuters and commercial vehicles, increasing the potential for traffic conflicts. When injury crashes happen, it’s crucial for those involved to seek prompt medical care and ensure the incident is properly reported.

Victims of traffic collisions may be entitled to pursue compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and vehicle repairs—especially when another party’s actions contributed to the crash.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a crash, reach out to Local Accident Reports for assistance.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Richmond County Board of Education had a special meeting Monday on personnel after the panel has been unable to move forward on selecting a new superintendent.

But the board agreed to make a decision by July 22.

There were 35 candidates total, but they have narrowed the list to six.

School board members began the process of replacing the former school superintendent months ago, but behind closed doors, they are divided on their top pick.

So Richmond County students will apparently return to the classroom without a named permanent school superintendent.

Ahead of Monday’s 4 p.m. meeting, Richmond County Board of Education member Monique Braswell held a news conference Thursday speaking as a parent and representative for District 5 – not for the board.

She blames dysfunction on the board on the delay in naming the next leader of Richmond County schools.

MONIQUE BRASWELL STATEMENT AND NEWS CONFERENCE:

The vetting of candidates is held behind closed doors, so we do not know the name of their final picks, but we do know interim Superintendent Malinda Cobb applied for the position.

She has worked for the district in various capabilities for several decades.

Her most recent positions include serving as assistant superintendent and associate superintendent.

Results from a community survey show more than 60% of parents, teachers and other members of the community want their next superintendent to keep some of the same style of the previous administration but with some necessary changes.

Only about 10% wanted someone to stay the course and continue the style and vision of the previous administration.

SEE THE SURVEY RESULTS:

He left just as four new board members were sworn in on the Richmond County Board of Education.

Augusta, GA (July 6, 2025) – Emergency responders were quick to the scene, providing care to the injured victims following a traffic accident that occurred early Saturday morning at the intersection of Olive Rd and Gordon Hwy in Augusta.

According to dispatch reports, the crash occurred at approximately 5:31 a.m. and resulted in at least one confirmed injury. The number of vehicles involved and the severity of the injuries have not yet been made public.

Medical crews evaluated the injured at the scene, and at least one person was likely transported to a nearby hospital for further care. Traffic in the area was temporarily affected as authorities worked to manage the scene and gather information.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident.

Intersection Crashes in Augusta

Busy intersections like Olive Rd and Gordon Hwy in Augusta are frequent sites of injury collisions, particularly during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced and drivers might be fatigued. These high-traffic routes see both local and through traffic, which can contribute to complex driving conditions and an increased risk of accidents.

Crashes at these locations can result in a wide range of injuries, from minor to severe, and may lead to lasting consequences for those involved. For victims, it’s essential to obtain immediate medical care and consider legal options if another party’s negligence contributed to the incident.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of cautious driving, especially in urban intersections where timing, speed, and attentiveness are critical to safety.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a crash, reach out to Local Accident Reports for assistance.
