Gwinnett County neighbors raised over $18K for three children orphaned by a weekend fire. The medical examiner identified the parents on Tuesday.
A tight-knit Gwinnett County community is coming together to support three children who lost their parents in a devastating house fire over the weekend.
The fire broke out early Saturday morning, destroying the family's home on Bay Cove Trail in Loganville. While the couple’s three children— a 21-year-old and two younger siblings—were able to escape and were taken to the hospital, their parents tragically did not survive.
On Tuesday, the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the parents as Robert Crook, 53, and Erika Crook, 46.
Matthew Catoe, a neighbor, described waking up to the terrifying sight of flames consuming the home and the desperate response from emergency crews.

“I came out and said for all it's worth, I have a garden hose if you'd like to use it,” Catoe recalled.
Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services responded quickly to the call at 4:07 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find a couple unconscious on the second floor, prompting a rescue effort through a window. Despite their efforts, the parents succumbed to the fire
The loss has deeply shaken the neighborhood, where the family had lived for two decades. In response, Catoe and other community members launched an online fundraiser to support the children, which has already raised more than $18,000.

“Obviously, if the parents are no longer with us, we don't want them to go without as children,” Catoe said.
He emphasized the profound impact the tragedy has had on everyone who knew the family. “It's hard to find the words to describe the impact. Everyone who knew them, went to school with them, watched their kids grow up together… it's just heartbreaking.”
Despite the grief, the overwhelming support from the community has been a small source of comfort for those affected.
“We're looking for a silver lining on a bad day, and I think we've been blessed enough to find one,” Catoe added.
The three children are now in the care of their grandparents.

Gwinnett County Fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a house fire in Loganville that send five people to the hospital. Two had to be rescued from the burning home on Bay Cove Trail.
The Brief
LOGANVILLE, Ga. - Gwinnett County fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of a house fire in Loganville that put five people in the hospital.
What we know:
The fire broke out early Saturday morning at around 4 a.m. on Bay Cove Trail.
The emergency call came from an adult trapped on the second floor of the home, along with another individual, according to Capt. Ryan McGiboney of the Gwinnett County Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, they worked quickly to rescue the trapped individuals and search for anyone else.

Gwinnett County fire officials are investigating a house fire on Bay Cove Trail.
"Moved them around, made entry through a window on the back of the house as well as on the front of the house," McGiboney explained. "We also had a third crew go in through the basement searching for other victims. Along their way, located two victims on the second story, they were able to get them out with a ladder through the front side of the house."
The two individuals were unconscious when they were found. They were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Their current condition is unknown.
Meanwhile, one man and two minors managed to escape the burning home just before firefighters arrived and were taken to the hospital in stable condition. At least three of the victims were said to be experiencing symptoms of smoke inhalation.

Neighbor Matthew Catoe lives across the street from the home that caught fire and says he and his wife awoke to sirens Saturday morning.
He later learned the family of five living there, his neighbors, were all taken to the hospital.
"We're all really shaken up. We're all trying to keep as much focus on helping the family as we can," he said.
Catoe says the three people who made it out of the house before firefighters arrived were the three children of the family that lives there.
He says he heard that the oldest sibling actually ran back inside the house to rescue his younger siblings.
"He did suffer burns on both sides of his body. And again, we're trying to rally behind them," Catoe said.

Gwinnett County fire officials are investigating a house fire on Bay Cove Trail.
But Catoe says the neighbors have learned that the two parents were the ones who were trapped on the second floor and had to be rescued.
"Mom and dad were rescued and, unfortunately, did not make it," he said.
FOX 5 has reached out to Gwinnett Fire, Gwinnett County Medical Examiner and Hospital officials about this, but has not received confirmation yet of any fatalities.
Catoe says the whole street is coming together to support the three children.
"The whole cul-de-sac knows everybody. Everyone's coming together. We want to rally behind the kids," he said.
What's next:
As of Saturday evening, fire investigators had not determined the cause of the fire, but said they were considering all possibilities.
Catoe and other neighbors set up a GoFundMe campaign to help the affected family.
