Georgia’s Alexis Alden is back from the Pan-Am Championships with a gold medal. The teen BMX star says she still has her sights set on the Olympics.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — A homegrown champion is back in Georgia with a gold medal and her eyes on the Olympics.

Alexis Alden, a 17-year-old BMX racer from Peachtree City, returned home Tuesday from the Pan American Cycling Championships in Chile, where she won gold while competing with Team USA Cycling.

She landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, welcomed by her proud family carrying balloons, signs and huge smiles.

Alden has been a force in the sport for years, rising through the national ranks alongside her brother. The siblings have trained together in Peachtree City since they were children, and both have competed at high levels nationally and internationally.

The last time many in Georgia saw Alden on 11Alive, she was 13 — already ranked No. 1 in the country for her age and setting her sights on a long-term dream: the Olympics.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work, a lot of training, and a lot of skill,” she told 11Alive in 2021. “But I’ve got my brother to help me.”

Now at 17, she’s a junior women’s champion with a Pan-Am gold medal and a clear path toward BMX racing at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

This year’s Pan American Championships were held in Santiago, Chile, bringing together top riders from across North and South America. For Team USA, the event was not only about earning medals but also gaining points and experience that help riders qualify for world-level events and, ultimately, the Olympics.

Alexis’s gold medal adds to a growing list of U.S. wins in international cycling and reinforces her status as one of the top young riders in the country.

BLOOM is designed to inspire visitors to embrace sustainable living practices while building a stronger sense of community and promoting fresh beginnings. BLOOM will feature a diverse range of exciting activities for people of all ages, including:

World Water Day – On Saturday, March 22 from 1 to 3 p.m., The Avenue Peachtree City will host a World Water Day celebration featuring a children’s activity table water experiments. These activities will be provided with the help of the Flint Riverkeeper, an organization that works to maintain and protect the quality and flow of the Flint River and its tributaries. The Avenue Peachtree City will also launch a fundraiser on its Facebook page, allowing attendees to support the organization’s efforts through donations. Apart from these activities, the Avenue will giveaway 200 water bottles, while supplies last.

Spring Festival – On Friday, April 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., The Avenue Peachtree City will host its Spring Festival at Central Park, featuring face painting, Bunny photos and an egg scavenger hunt with over 10,000 eggs provided by The Church of the King. Additional children’s activities will also be available at the Spring Festival courtesy of the Southern Conservation Trust, offering areas for families to take part in a butterfly craft along with stuffy adoptions, where kids can “adopt” a plush friend to take home.

Arts & Crafts Market – The Avenue Peachtree City will host an Arts & Crafts Market on Tuesday, April 22 from 3:00 to 7:30 p.m. The event will feature artists and crafters from the Newnan-Coweta Art Association, a non-profit organization that fosters art education and the appreciation of art, encouraging artists to produce original works of art and more.

Earth Day Celebration – On Tuesday, April 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., The Avenue Peachtree City will cap off BLOOM at Central Park with activities that celebrate our planet. As part of the celebration, visitors can learn about animals from AWARE Wild Life Center, a wildlife center dedicated to rehabilitating injured and orphaned native Georgia wild animals and educating the public on peacefully coexisting with wildlife. The event will also feature several children’s activities provided by the Southern Conservation Trust, including a ‘Planting for the Planet’ activity where guests can plant and take home wildflowers to help support pollinators.

Cigarette may have sparked huge weekend fire

A brush fire on Saturday caused several homes in Peachtree City to evacuate. Officials now say a discarded cigarette may have started the fire.

The Brief

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. - Fire officials are warning of heightened fire danger across North Georgia, including metro Atlanta.

The warning comes after a fast-moving brush fire in Peachtree City forced evacuations on Saturday.

What we know:

The fire ignited near a multi-use path between the Braelinn Golf Club and the Crescent Oak subdivision. It spread rapidly, jumping the path and advancing through a greenbelt and the golf course, coming perilously close to homes and a commercial building. Fortunately, no homes were damaged, although a large shed near the golf course was destroyed. Firefighters from Peachtree City, Fayette County, and Fayetteville responded swiftly to contain the flames.

What we don't know:

The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined. Peachtree City fire investigators are still working on identifying the cause, with a discarded cigarette being considered as a potential source of ignition.

Timeline:

The fire occurred on Saturday, prompting immediate evacuations. The National Weather Service has indicated that hazardous conditions, characterized by dry vegetation, low humidity, and gusty winds, will persist through Monday evening. However, rain expected overnight on Tuesday may help alleviate the fire risk.
