Brunswick can likely expect a lot more summer travelers this year.

Multiple news outlets have confirmed Georgia's next Buc-ee's is set to open on July 1, which is about a month sooner than the company's projections earlier this year.

The Brunswick Buc-ee's will be located at I-95 and State Hwy 99. This is a little more than 60 miles south of Savannah and a little more than 20 miles north of Jekyll Island.

Are more new Buc-ee's coming to Georgia?

A fourth Buc-ee's is being built in Monroe County which is set to open in early 2026. The chain was celebrated with Buc-ee's Day at the Georgia State Capitol in March, during which the company's senior director of operations Richard Sebastian said how much they love doing business in Georgia, so fingers crossed for more locations to come.

What is Buc-ee's?

For those who haven't been to one, Buc-ee's is a chain of gas stations/convenience stores with a ton of branded merchandise depicting their beaver mascot. They are also a popular spot for good food, with some of the favorites being the 'Beaver Nuggets,' 20 jerky variations, and the 'Texas Roundup' sections offering brisket, pulled pork, sausages, turkey and roasted cinnamon nuts.

Severe weather is expected to hit Southeast Georgia, starting Friday and lasting through Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook in Georgia. Rain and thunderstorms will continue Saturday to Wednesday. While a few strong to severe storms are possible, the overall risk of severe weather remains low.

Rainfall is expected to total 1-3 inches, with some areas potentially receiving 4-5 inches. This much rain could cause some local rivers to flood.

However, the Southeast region of the state could see more severe weather. Here is the severe weather predictions:

Southeast Georgia to get slammed

According to The Washington Post, an atmospheric river is expected to hit the Southeast, bringing torrential rain to southern Georgia and much of northern Florida.

What are atmospheric rivers?

"Atmospheric rivers are relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere – like rivers in the sky – that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

These atmospheric rivers are similar to how rivers carry water across land. The NOAA says they are like "rivers in the sky."

Atmospheric rivers are responsible for causing great quantities of rain that can produce flooding.

Christine Hall is celebrating her 50^th birthday year with her first solo exhibition at Bull Street’s Location Gallery. Despite her occasional inclusion in group shows, it is hard to believe that this successful businesswoman and entrepreneur, long considered Savannah’s premier portrait photographer, has never had a show of her own. The wait has been well worth it.

Moments of Normal showcases 19 poignant images of 13-year-old daughter Ruby, who has cerebral palsy and profound autism. The show coincides with the release of a book by the same name.

Photography career begins in high school

Born and raised in Palm Harbor, Florida, Hall graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a BFA in Photography in 1997. She “spent a lot of time in the darkroom in high school,” photographing, and sometimes selling, images of children and of her afterschool co-workers at Chick-Fil-A. To become an E.R. nurse was always her backup, practical, make-a-living plan, but her art teacher encouraged her photography, and when SCAD visited her high school in the early '90s, she made up her mind to pursue a career in art.

Hall moved to Savannah in 1993 and began her portraiture career during college. “When I was waiting tables, I would ask people with children if I could photograph their kids for my assignments.”

With the help of moms, who were pushier and more outgoing than she, Hall networked with doctors’ offices and other moms, making herself available at playdates, birthday parties and babysitting gigs in the pre-website and social media marketing era. A summer internship facilitated through Professor Craig Stevens found her developing in the darkroom for a “society” photographer in Charleston, South Carolina. After college, she continued networking with parents through handwritten notes, while a job with the revered Savannah photographer Jack Leigh taught her how to price and sell her work. Slowly, Hall’s client base grew through word-of-mouth until she became the go-to photographer for local families who appreciated how she married fine art with commercial photography.

In a style that is somewhat reminiscent of one of her main influences, famed southern photographer Sally Mann, Hall rarely, if ever, shoots in a studio setting, preferring to capture the true and spontaneous interactions between family members and friends in an outdoor setting of their choosing. Favoring black-and-white imagery, but also skilled in capturing images in color, Hall shoots children cavorting on beaches, docks and seawalls; girls floating ethereally, like Millais’ Ophelia, in the ocean or in rivers; boys running to catch balls; brides laughing with their fathers before their nuptials begin; babies giggling and rolling in grass. But unlike Mann, whose images of her own children were mostly carefully staged and painstakingly lit, Hall’s work sings with freedom and unplanned moments of grace, beauty, humor and love.

'There's been a lot of grief'

Throughout it all, her husband (an Illustration major she met while at SCAD) has been by her side, impeccably framing and installing her images in their clients’ homes or offices, and, mostly, transporting, feeding, changing and caring for their three daughters: Alexa, the eldest who has just enrolled in Sequential Art at SCAD; 13-year-old Ava, Ruby's twin; and Ruby, the subject of Hall’s book, upcoming show and Instagram account @momentsofnormal.

Requiring full care and constant vigilance, Ruby has not progressed developmentally past the age of one.

Tearing up slightly, Hall said, “There’s been a lot of grief associated with her diagnosis. I don’t cry as much as I did at the beginning, but getting services and funding, whatever the administration, is a constant struggle. I get really frustrated and angry with the system and the endless paperwork. It’s so isolating.”

Hall added that the older Ruby gets, the harder it becomes to physically contain and monitor her. Hall recognizes that her child is sweet and non-aggressive, and she has empathy for families where there may be self-injury or constant screaming.

The twins were born through an emergency C-Section and Hall says she knew right away that Ruby was not developing like Ava. A definitive diagnosis was made right after Mother’s Day a decade ago, when a doctor at Emory bluntly told the parents, “This is as good as it’s going to get.”

Hall was crushed. The relentlessness of Ruby’s care weighs heavily; it’s a constant battle to qualify her daughter for the needs-based Katie Beckett, a Medicaid funded program for special needs children. “This really humbles you.”

Photography exhibit coincides with book launch

The 19 images in Moments of Normal were taken over the span of Ruby’s 13 years. “Having a kid with special needs compresses my head and keeps me in ‘fight-or-flight’ mode, but photographing her frees that compression. I craved ‘normal’―and still crave ‘normal’―for my family.”

Ruby is sensory-seeking: There are photographs of her putting a lot of things in her mouth, bouncing on her backyard trampoline, of tightly holding onto her father’s legs as he makes his morning coffee in the kitchen.

“She hangs on you all the time,” Hall said.

In another, a stunning color image, Ruby lies in a bright red bathing suit, seemingly relishing the sensation of grass on her back, arms and legs. “None of it’s easy. It was hard looking back and choosing these images. I had put so many emotions in a box.”

In addition to the exhibition images, Hall has produced a 92-page book with commentary by Susan Crowe Brown, whom she first met at a Publix in Florida with her intellectually and physically disabled son Matt, now in his late thirties. “With her permission, I’ve used her writings as she expresses her struggles so beautifully,” explained Hall.

Gallery proceeds from the show and a portion of sales from the book will benefit nonprofit esp of Savannah. Esp Inc., formerly Extra Special People Inc., is a leading special needs membership organization dedicated to supporting disabled individuals and their families. It was established in Athens, Georgia, in 1986, and a branch opened in Savannah in January of this year.

Hall's debut solo exhibition at Location Gallery fittingly opens the week following Mother's Day, free and open to the public, and runs through June 6. The work is raw, candid, honest, joyful and beautiful. Don’t miss this show.

After 30 years of existing as an unpermitted event on Tybee Island, the Orange Crush Festival is back this weekend, permit in hand. Though the permit is for a one-day festival on the beach on April 19, there will be other events in and around Savannah and South Carolina on Friday and Sunday.

Orange Crush will hold its official kick off at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 18, with a ribbon cutting event and check in for attendees at Henry Street Bistro, 1301 Montgomery Street, in Savannah. Following the "opening," several other venues are tapping into the Spring Break atmosphere.
