Water Damage Restoration in Des Plaines, IL

German CDMO Vetter held an official groundbreaking ceremony for the start of construction on a clinical manufacturing site in Des Plaines, IL. The company has invested approximately $285 million in the new facility.

Upstream and ground preparation work on the premises started back in April. Vetter’s construction plans include a 160,000-sq-ft clinical production facility for aseptic manufacturing. The site will also feature new process areas for material preparation and compounding. Additional buildings will include supporting services like storage, laboratories, and offices. The site is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2029 with subsequent relocation plans of Vetter’s current clinical operations in Skokie.

“Today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks another significant milestone within our continuing expansion plans,” said Udo U. Vetter, chairman of the company’s advisory board and member of the owner family. “The new site will not only demonstrate our enhanced clinical operations and manufacturing capabilities but will also expand our presence in the U.S. significantly. We want to express our deep gratitude for the warm hospitality of the Illinois Science + Technology Park since 2009, hosting and supporting our successful start of U.S. manufacturing operations. We are excited to now be able to officially kick off this ambitious project.”

“In the current economic climate, it is a positive sign to see an international company like Vetter making a significant investment to expand their footprint here in the Chicago suburbs,” added Andrew Goczkowski, mayor of Des Plaines. “This new facility will create high-quality jobs for our residents and bolster our local economy. “Together with our clinical site in Rankweil, Austria, we will be able to meet the increasing development needs of our customers while reinforcing our industry position as a reliable partner for low-volume injectables of innovative drug candidates during the crucial early development phases, among others,” noted Henryk Badack, Vetter’s managing director.

The existing buildings in the Des Plaines area will be retained. With 19-acres the property also provides ample space for future expansion opportunities. These will depend on global market developments and customer demand, as well as additional investment projects currently underway at Vetter in Germany and Austria.

AUDITIONS are NOW open for the AYCO’s Chamber Music Program at AMI’s Clarendon Hills and Geneva Campuses. It is a great opportunity for young musicians to play and create chamber music in duos, trios, quartets, etc, and be coached by some of Chicago’s premier musicians. Auditions are held via video and include all orchestral instruments and voice.

Auditions are held via video submission for the Fall Semester, 2025. Chamber music teaches diplomatic communication skills, learning to trust other musicians, finding one’s own musical voice, and making musical decisions together democratically is a wonderful and important experience for young people to have. Additionally, participating in extracurricular chamber music activities has been shown to enhance cognitive abilities, improving skills such as memory, focus, and problem-solving—valuable benefits that extend beyond music into academic and personal success.

The Des Plaines storefront that formerly was home to B’s Sweet Bites is once again open to customers — but with a new name and a decidedly different menu.

Pronto Italian Sandwiches opened last week at 1641 Oakton Place.

It’s the third Pronto; others operate at 114 S. Washington St. in Hinsdale and Terminal 1 at O’Hare International Airport.

Pronto sets itself apart from other sandwich shops by using schiacciata bread, a flatbread that has a crispy exterior and soft interior. Ingredients typically are stuffed inside the bread.

Co-owner Peter Burdi said he and his wife, Dana, discovered schiacciata while traveling in Italy with their daughter.

“We fell in love with this bread,” Burdi said.

An Italian baker taught them how to make schiacciata, and now they bake it in-house for their sandwiches.

The Burdis also are behind Il Poggiolo Ristorante and Nabuki, both in Hinsdale. The first Pronto started as a pop-up outlet inside Il Poggiolo, Peter Burdi said.

Pronto’s sandwiches bear the names of Italian celebrities, most from the movie industry. That’s because Il Poggiolo operates on the site of a former silent movie theater, Burdi said.

The Brando, for example, includes capicola, mortadella, salami and provolone among its ingredients; the Pacino has prosciutto, mozzarella, truffle pecorino cream and arugula.

If you’d prefer a vegetarian sandwich, the DiCaprio includes sliced tomatoes, roasted red bell peppers and mozzarella.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Burdi said of the Hollywood hook. “People like it.”

The restaurant is in Des Plaines’ 5th Ward, and Alderman Thomas Merlin already has been by to grab a sandwich. He went for the Tarantino, which has roasted turkey breast, aged white cheddar cheese, pickled red onions and avocado.

“It was really good,” Merlin said. “All the flavors worked well.”

Foot traffic and sales have exceeded the Burdis’ expectations. While the restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. now, they plan to extend operating hours to 8 p.m. as soon as next week, Peter Burdi said.

Additionally, a full-service Pronto Ristorante should open for evening dining next door within a month or so, Burdi said.

Pronto’s predecessor on Oakton Place, B’s Sweet Bites, was a restaurant and bakery that closed in February after more than 11 years. The bakery’s products now are available at the North suburban Once Upon a Bagel restaurants and at Arlington Heights’ farmers markets, according to its Facebook page.
