The sale of an iconic West Peoria family entertainment center means the end of an era for one family, but the new owners are excited for a new chapter in Kartville’s 62-year history.
Mike and Karina Hinton recently purchased Kartville from previous owner David Baker. Mike Hinton indicated they are planning to further invest in Kartville by adding new food and beverage options and new attractions.
“We don’t want to give away all of our secrets, but we have tons of ideas and we're excited to take Kartville to the next level,” he said. “We also invite conversations with the local organizations interested in part of this growth. So, please stay tuned.”
Patrons treating their children or grandchildren to a day at Kartville likely remembered childhood outings there of their own.
Baker’s father, Al Baker, and Jess Buehler founded the fun center in 1963 when they discovered an abandoned go-cart track. Over the years, they added batting cages, dune buggies, miniature golf, bumper boats and a concession stand. Al Baker purchased Buehler’s share of the business and passed along ownership to his son in 1988. Baker operated the entertainment center for 37 years before deciding to sell.
“Once I met Mike, talked to him a little bit, he seemed like the right person to carry on the tradition here,” Baker said. “I have three daughters, and they're all doing what they went to school to do, so they’re not really interested in running Kartville.”
Baker’s future plans include “a lot of relaxing, a little fishing, and a bunch of traveling.” After four decades of providing fun for other families, he plans to spend time with his own family, including grandchildren.
The Hintons vowed to continue Kartville’s legacy of making memories with safe, affordable family fun.
“Family means the world to us,” Karina Hinton said. “We are looking forward to raising our kids here in the summers along with the community’s children.”

PEORIA (25News Now) - Peoria’s City Council officially approved buying Expo Gardens at Tuesday’s meeting with the hope that it will someday develop into single family housing.
In a 9-2 vote, the city council approved the purchase of nearly 70 acres that make up the property for $1.25 million, using post-employment benefit funds. The state has marked funds for Peoria’s land bank in the newly signed budget, which will reimburse the post-employment benefit funds.
The city will officially own the property around the second week of July.
District 5 Council member Denis Cyr led a failed effort to defer the sale until a formal appraisal was done, but other members didn’t want to miss the opportunity to buy it.
If the city had decided not to purchase the property, it would have faced bank foreclosure.
It appears the Heart of Illinois Fair will still happen at Expo Gardens this year, but the city plans to redevelop the area into residential properties. The fair’s fate is unclear after that.
Many around the horseshoe spoke positively about having more single-family homes near schools.
“I couldn’t be more excited about a project like this, that allows us to grow our tax base and support our education system. Opportunities like this don’t come every day,” said Mayor Rita Ali.
Cyr and District 2 representative Alex Carmona voted against the sale. Cyr opposed it because there had been no property appraisal. City manager Patrick Urich said the price per acre is relatively low.
Carmona questioned whether the government should decide what happens to the property.
“At the end of the day, government intervention in the private sector is typically not a good idea, and we have plenty of examples of it not working,” Carmona said.
Through September of 2026, the current Expo Gardens team will lease the property. After that, they will continue the lease on a month-to-month basis. This will allow events already planned on the property to go forward.
The next step is for Peoria to look for a developer to put single-family homes on the property, a process expected to take several months.

PEORIA, IL — Grocery giant Kroger announced plans to scale back on brick-and-mortar locations this year, with roughly 60 stores set to close over the next 18 months.
In the major chain's first quarter earnings report, which was released on Friday, Kroger said it recognized an impairment charge of $100 million related to the planned store closings. The company expects a "modest financial benefit" after the closures, the company said.
"Kroger is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience, and as a result, this will not impact full-year guidance. Kroger will offer roles in other stores to all associates currently employed at affected stores," the company said in a statement.
Kroger said the company expects to earn an operating profit of between $4.7 billion and $4.9 billion this year.
Though it is unclear which 60 locations exactly will be closed, media outlets have reported that a number of locations have recently closed or will close soon, including a Peoria store on Sterling Avenue.
The closures come nearly six months after the controversial proposed merger with Kroger competitor, Albertson's, was blocked in court. The rulings were celebrated as a "major win" by the Federal Trade Commission — which, together with several states — asked the federal court to stop the merger.
Federal regulators said the merger would have eliminated competition andresulted in higher prices for consumers and bad outcomes for workers.
The $24.6 billion merger was abandoned and both companies turned to suing each other to recoup the damages.
“Rather than fulfill its contractual obligations to ensure that the merger succeeded, Kroger acted in its own financial self-interest, repeatedly providing insufficient divestiture proposals that ignored regulators’ concerns,” Albertsons General Counsel and Chief Policy Officer Tom Moriarty said in a news release.
Kroger in response called Albertsons’ claims “baseless and without merit.”
“This is clearly an attempt to deflect responsibility following Kroger's written notification of Albertsons' multiple breaches of the agreement, and to seek payment of the merger's break fee, to which they are not entitled,” the company said in a prepared statement
Kroger, which is based in Cincinnati, operates 1,239 grocery stores in 16 states and owns many well-known regional chains including Ralphs, QFC, Fred Meyer and Food 4 Less.
