What Tools Does Disaster Response Use for Water Damage Clean-Up?
We only use the best equipment! With our extensive experience in the Prairie Village restoration industry, we've acquired state-of-the-art tools designed to tackle a wide range of challenges. This experience has also allowed our technicians to identify which type of equipment is best for a particular situation. Some of the most common water damage restoration tools we use include:

Infrared Cameras
Our infrared cameras give us the ability to see moisture in walls and ceilings that is not visible to the naked eye, almost like having "X-ray" vision. This capability allows us to detect and address trapped and hidden humidity, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.

Moisture Meters
We use moisture meters to measure moisture levels in cellulose material. Before and after the drying process, we will conduct moisture readings in all areas of your property. If we detect moisture in an unaffected area of your building, we'll get to work quickly to dry it.

Air Movers
This equipment is designed to work in conjunction with our dehumidifiers. While our dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and convert it to a liquid, our Air Mover helps to circulate this moisture in the air so that the dehumidifier can effectively remove it.

Ozone Generators
These advanced tools enable us to cleanse affected surfaces and the air in a more effective manner. Ozone Generators work by causing oxygen molecules to implode, making them a valuable deodorization tool.

Xtreme Xtractor
This tool is great for tackling tough moisture after water damage. It allows us to apply direct pressure to a surface, like a carpet, that has soaked up water. The pressure helps draw out the water, making it easier to remove.
Top 3 Types of Water Damage You Should Know About
Water damage can strike without warning and can wreak havoc on your property, leaving you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or an overflowing appliance, your property needs immediate water damage clean-up in Prairie Village, KS, to prevent further harm. Here are the top three types of water damage you should know about:

Clean Water Damage

This type of water damage happens from a "clean" source, such as rainwater or a broken pipe in your home. It's easier to clean up than others on this list but can still cause extensive property damage when ignored.

Gray Water Damage

Gray water damage stems from appliances such as toilets without feces, washing machines, and dishwashers. Gray water sometimes contains bacteria and contaminants that can make you or your family sick.

Black Water Damage

The name alone indicates the severity of this type of water damage. It's caused by backed-up sewer lines, river flooding, and standing water that supports bacteria growth. Black water presents serious health hazards and needs to be handled by professional water damage contractors.
If you suspect your home or business has been damaged by one or more of the types of water above, take the following steps:

- Be Safe: Turn off all electricity running through your property. Don't go near or touch any water you believe to be contaminated.
- Stop the Source of Water: If you're able, put a stop to the water at its source. That way, you can prevent more damage.
- Call Disaster Response: Contact our water damage company ASAP for water restoration services. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.
Our Process for Water Damage Restoration in Prairie Village, KS
Having a water damage restoration company by your side who knows how to remediate moisture is a key factor in getting your life back on track. At Disaster Response, we have refined our process over 40+ years of water damage clean-up experience. That way, we can provide customers with reliable, comprehensive service when they need it the most.
We utilize powerful pumps and vacuums to eliminate standing water from your property. Swift water removal is essential in minimizing damage and lowering the likelihood of mold growth. Our team is dedicated to ensuring efficient water extraction to prevent any additional complications.
After extracting water from your property, we dry and dehumidify the impacted areas. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to do so to eliminate moisture from walls, floors, and furniture. Proper drying helps prevent warping, swelling, and the growth of mold.
Whenever we deal with water damage, we have to address the potential contaminants and bacteria that can enter your home. We make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas to create a safe living environment. This involves cleaning carpets, upholstery, and personal belongings. Our technicians also use antimicrobial treatments to prevent mold and bacterial growth.
The final step in the process is the restoration of your home to its pre-damage condition. This comprehensive restoration process may encompass a range of tasks, from minor repairs such as replacing drywall and installing new carpeting to major reconstruction efforts. Rest assured that Disaster Response is fully equipped to manage all aspects of water damage restoration, from start to finish.
- Maintenance: Have your business or home's roof, appliances, and plumbing inspected by professionals to spot early signs of wear and tear.
- Water Alarms: If there is a flood or leak in your home, a water alarm can alert you so that you can take action immediately.
- Drainage: Your home needs proper drainage systems in place at all times. To prevent water buildup, be sure to unclog your downspouts and gutters.
- Cracks and Gaps: Be sure to seal up any cracks and gaps in your property's foundation to limit water from getting inside.

The Prairie Village Art Show comes back to The Shops of Prairie Village from May 30 to June 1.
The sprawling event—the second-oldest art show in the Kansas City metro, at 68—provides its community with an annual influx of creativity and culture. It will feature 100 artist booths, daily live music, food vendors, and an atmosphere that keeps folks from Prairie Village and the surrounding cities coming back.
“The atmosphere of the Prairie Village Art Show is lively, welcoming, and distinctly community-centered,” says Ashley Da Costa, a spokesperson for The Shops of Prairie Village. “Set in the heart of The Shops of Prairie Village, the event brings together art lovers, families, and neighbors to celebrate creativity in a relaxed, outdoor setting.”
The Prairie Village Art Show happens rain or shine, and over 15,000 attendees are expected throughout the weekend. Here’s what makes this year special.
The Artists
One hundred artists from KC and beyond—in fact, from 19 total states—will man the booths that sprawl across the Shops. The lineup showcases awe-striking talent in an array of artistic mediums, from paintings and ceramics to photography, jewelry, and mixed media.
This year’s featured artist is Prairie Village’s own Jenny Meyer-McCall. For the show, she created a mixed-media floral painting that’s a patchwork of moods and infinite specificity; layers of acrylic paint mix with hyperlocal elements like brick fragments from the Shops, pages from books found at Prairie Village garage sales, and fabric from her grandmother’s sewing room. Lean in to examine each part, then stand back to take in a deep and comprehensive whole.
You can find Meyer-McCall in booth 28, right across from the AdventHealth stage.
Elsewhere, you can find “a new community mural created in collaboration with local artist Katie Lee located at the end of the clock tower walkway,” says Da Costa. “It’s a tribute to the spirit and culture of Prairie Village, and we’ll be hosting a Meet the Artist event on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to noon, where guests can connect with Katie and learn about her creative process.”
The Music
Each day, a new band will lay the soundtrack for the Prairie Village Art Show.
On Friday night, Drew Six’s country-rock style will be the perfect way to set the summer break vibe. Six will play from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Private Stock will take the AdventHealth stage from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday—and like the show’s artists, they have a little bit of everything in store. Expect anything from John Denver to The Weeknd. Then, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, the KC Bones will play us home with songs by the Grateful Dead.
The Happenings
Of course, there’s more to the Prairie Village Art Show than art.
Yes, there will be food, and you won’t be disappointed by the selection. Most notably, the Chris Cakes All-You-Can-Eat breakfast. There will be pancakes, sausage, and orange Tang.
In the food and drinks section of the show, you’ll also find:
Younger attendees—and maybe parents looking to peruse the booths without distraction—will love Kids Village near the clock tower. There’ll be a coloring station, bubbles, and yard games throughout the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., kids can get balloon art and face paintings for free.
And there’s more.
“This year, Kids Village will feature two new hands-on craft activities sponsored by Wee Create, in addition to the popular ninja-headband craft sponsored by Aplomb Martial Arts,” says Da Costa.
The Prairie Village Art Show spares no expense when it comes to merch. This year’s offerings include:
History is Here—Be a Part of It
“Reaching the 68th year of the Prairie Village Art Show says so much about its connection to the community,” says Da Costa. “It’s become a tradition that generations look forward to, thanks to the high caliber of artists it attracts and the fun, welcoming atmosphere that keeps people coming back year after year.”
Spend a weekend seeing art, hearing art, and being part of the atmosphere artists try to capture.

New York Butcher Shoppe, a restaurant, wine bar and butcher shop, will open a new Prairie Village location in Corinth Quarter later this year.
New York Butcher Shoppe is coming to Corinth Quarter
New York Butcher Shoppe will offer both dine-in service and retail
On New York Butcher Shoppe’s restaurant side, customers will be able to choose from a variety of steaks and pair them with a side of their choice.
New York Butcher Shoppe’s “premier” cuts of meat will be the star of the menu, Sovereign said, with dishes like wagyu burgers, pork chops and meatball sandwiches.
In addition to meat, the menu will also feature other dishes like grilled salmon, caesar salads and charcuterie boards.
The restaurant will also offer a wide selection of wines by the glass, in addition to cocktails and mocktails.
On the retail side, customers will also be able to shop for beef, pork, chicken and sausages to take home — in addition to other take-home items like prepared meals, salads and dips.
“(We want to be) able to help guide the customers through getting something they’re really going to enjoy with the money they’re investing,” Sovereign said. “Everybody’s got a different taste palette. Much like if you’re drinking a coffee, you might like a dark, medium or light roast, right? So you may like a steak with more or less marbling in it, because that marbling does change the flavor profile of meat.”
This marks the first New York Butcher Shoppe in JoCo
The company got its start in South Carolina in 1999, by New York natives who had relocated there.
This also marks a first for Sovereign, who has always wanted to own and operate a restaurant. He’ll be doing so with franchise co-owners Glenn McDowell and Michael Harrell.
“I’ve always wanted to own a restaurant,” Sovereign said. “This is kind of a dream come true for me.”
Preceding the Prairie Village location, Sovereign has another Kansas City area location in the works in the South Plaza neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri. That location is scheduled to open on May 14.
Once the franchise’s first two area locations are up and running, Sovereign said he foresees more expansion on both sides of the state line.

After several “incredible” years, Prairie Village ice cream shop Chill in the Village is closing.
The shop announced via social media this week that it would close its storefront at 6966 Mission Road. It will serve all of customers’ favorite frozen treats until May 31.
But have no fear, ice cream lovers: Something else is on the way.
St. Louis favorite Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Ice Cream will open in the space in September. It will serve “nice” ice cream for its under-21 guests, as well as “naughty” spiked ice cream for those of age.
Clementine’s gooey butter cake ice cream made The O List in 2019 and was called “the sexiest ice cream alive” in Oprah Magazine.
There are a few things that make Clementine’s different, CEO Tamara Keefe said.
For one, the micro creamery makes its small-batch ice cream without any artificial ingredients. All the cookies, cakes, and other add-ins are baked by hand and then put into the ice cream.
The brand has a higher butterfat percentage than most ice cream competitors, making it extra rich and creamy. While many ice cream brands have a 50% “overrun,” or air content, Clementine’s delivers a denser product with less than 30% overrun.
Nice flavors include Italian Butter Cookie (cookie pieces flecked into Speculoos ice cream with brown sugar and cinnamon) and Espresso Royale (dark roast coffee flavor with a blend of Ethiopian and Sumatra beans, with hints of vanilla and brown sugar).
As for the naughty? Boozy Banana Rum (roasted banana ice cream blended with brown sugar, cinnamon, and spiced rum) and Maple Bourbon with Candied Pecans (bourbon and maple syrup in vanilla ice cream sprinkled with salted candied Missouri pecans).
Clementine’s also specializes in dairy-free ice cream, including Lemon Poppyseed and Tahini Chocolate Chip flavors.
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Clementine's Ice Cream (@clementinescreamery)
While Clementine’s has eight locations in the St. Louis area, it’s looking to grow rapidly.
The brand is eyeing eight spots in the Kansas City metro, Keefe said, so more location announcements are on the way.
“We’ve had so much demand from folks in Kansas City when they come to St. Louis,” Keefe said. “We believe that Kansas City deserves to have super-premium, artisanal ice cream.”
Local Realtor Sheryl Vickers is representing Clementine’s and Keefe, who applauded Keefe, the brand and the aesthetic of the locations.
“I always celebrate women who are elevating the game,” she said. “She’s just a force to be reckoned with … She has lines down the street.”
Vickers of Select Sites LLC is currently seeking more sites for the brand.
Chill got its start in 2018, when Karie and Ed Nelson bought a local TCBY franchise and relocated it to the east side of The Shops of Prairie Village. They decided to separate from the brand in 2020 and reopen Chill as its own concept.
“Your support, laughter and love over the years have meant the world to us - thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Chill in the Village said in its farewell note on social media.
