Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

BARDSTOWN, Ky. — Bardstown City Schools (BCS) has been awarded $21,563,000 to support the ongoing renovation of its Fifth Street Campus, a multi-year project that will transform learning spaces for middle and high school students.
What You Need To Know
The funding comes from the School Facility Assistance Fund, which recently awarded over $130 million to 14 school districts across Kentucky. The money was made available through House Joint Resolution 32, which provides financial assistance to districts with critical building needs and limited local funding options.
“This award will supply substantial construction funding assistance for our ongoing renovations at our Fifth Street Campus,” said Superintendent Dr. Ryan Clark. “The timing of our projects, our needs, and strongly advocating for assistance due to rising construction costs put us in a position to receive this incredible help. We’re incredibly grateful to Senator Jimmy Higdon and Representative Candy Massaroni for their support in helping secure these funds for our students and community.”
Renovations at the Fifth Street Campus began in June 2022 with the conversion of the former Bardstown Elementary School into a new career and technical education center, along with additional classroom space for middle and high school students.
The remaining phases of the project are expected to be completed by 2030, including a new cafeteria, state-of-the-art media center, updates to interior classrooms, updates to science labs, a dedicated unified arts wing and outdoor green spaces for performances, instruction and student gatherings.
The funding BCS received is 50% of the gap between the cost of the project and the district’s available local resources. To qualify, projects must be a top priority on the district’s facilities plan, already underway or ready to begin construction, and located in districts that have passed a dedicated facilities tax but still lack the funding to cover full costs.
Heaven Hill expands whiskey distilling operations in Kentucky with new $200M facility

BARDSTOWN — Heaven Hill, the largest family owned and operated distillery in the U.S., has expanded.
The distiller, known for brands that include Elijah Craig, Evan Williams, Larceny, and its namesake Heaven Hill, among others, has completed phase one of a $200 million expansion project in Bardstown.
"Needless to say, along the way, there were lots of ups and downs, changes in the industry, consumer tastes and a whole range of other things," Max Shapira, executive chairman and second generation of the Heaven Hill family owners said Monday at a ceremonial filling of the first barrel at the new distillery. "Through sound judgement, listening to various individuals, and looking at the future, we were able to overcome all these things."
The project was roughly five years in the making, bringing a new distillery, Heaven Hill Springs Distillery at 1355 E. John Rowan Blvd. in Bardstown to life. The distillery currently has one new state-of-the-art still, and company officials said the next two phases of expansion will bring in two more stills.
"When you talk about relationships, there's one that's no more endearing than the relationship we have with Bardstown and Nelson County," Shapira said. "This is another one of those great platforms on which we can build our business, not just today and not just tomorrow or next week or next month, but over the years and over the decades to come."
This facility, which can flex from producing 150,000 to 450,000 barrels annually when operating at full capacity, brings increased opportunities for innovation and "maybe different mash bills," said Heaven Hill Master Distiller Conor O’Driscoll. This level of production will essentially allow Heaven Hill to match its production capacity at its Bernheim Distillery in Louisville.
"It's not just the distillery, but it's a symbol of our view of the future of Kentucky bourbon," said Heaven Hill Co-President Allan Latts. "This facility is a cornerstone of our long-term vision to grow with purpose, to lead with quality and transparency and to ensure that Heaven Hill remains ... an independent, family-owned leader for generations to come."
The facility is a "working distillery that visitors can come to, not a tourist attraction that makes whiskey," creates a level of transparency for the brand and introduces those who are curious to the true intricacies associated with distilling bourbon, O’Driscoll said. The distillery is expected to have its grand opening in September.
Currently, Heaven Hill has roughly two million barrels aging at its facilities, which Shapira said accounts for upward of 15% of the global supply. And with the new distillery starting production, Heaven Hill is soon to have more barrels filled and aging.
"This distillery is going to allow us to continue to push the boundaries again of who Heaven Hill is, what we do and what it means to make American history," said O’Driscoll. "This is a moment of reinvestment, reinvigoration, and a powerful reminder for the best is yet to come."

BARDSTOWN, Ky. — A group of distillery workers in Kentucky are enjoying a nice payday thanks to their Powerball office pool.
Seventeen Barton 1792 Distillery workers carpooled to Kentucky Lottery headquarters in Louisville after work on Tuesday. They showed lottery officials a winning $50,000 Powerball ticket they purchased at the Bardstown Walmart as part of their weekly office pool.
For over a year, each member of the group has been paying into the office pool and having co-worker Chris Smith, of Bardstown, purchase tickets for the three weekly Powerball drawings.
“We all play the lottery; every week I go around, I collect money from everybody, and we got a little pool going,” Smith said. “Usually we’ll win, like, four bucks or eight bucks. Once we won $100. This weekend we won $50,000, which is a pretty good little payout for everybody.”
Smith bought the winning ticket the previous Friday and when he scanned it after Saturday night’s drawing, he said it felt “kind of scary.”

“I scanned it on the machine; $50,000 showed up, and the first thing I do is look and see who is behind me. Anybody see that?” Smith joked. “It felt pretty nice, you know? And then I took it home and scanned it on my phone just to make sure it read the same, and it did, and I was like, okay.”
Smith said one of his coworkers sent him a Kentucky Lottery Facebook post about a winning Powerball ticket sold in Bardstown.

“And I was like, it’s got to be real,” Smith said.
Smith said he usually buys the group’s tickets each week at a local Bardstown convenience store but decided to make the purchase while grocery shopping at the Walmart located at 3795 East Rowan Blvd., Bardstown, Ky. 40004.
The group’s winning ticket matched four white ball winning numbers and the Powerball, winning $50,000 from the drawing held Saturday, March 22, 2025. The winning Powerball numbers were: 6 – 7 – 25 – 46 – 57 Powerball 12.
Kentucky Lottery President and CEO Mary Harville greeted the group with a $50,000 ceremonial check, taking photos with them until she had the honor of handing each winner their individual prize – $2,941 after taxes.

“The Kentucky Lottery’s mission is funding education and creating fun games and an amazing winner experience in our Winners Experience Lobby.” Harville said. “You could tell these winners were a tight-knit group and truly enjoyed being around each other because they were laughing and joking with one another while we were printing their checks.”
The group works first shift at Barton 1792 bottling bourbon and have worked together for several years, with the longest tenured member of the group having been there for 45 years.
Smith said he and his co-workers started the office pool when the Powerball jackpot rolled to over a billion dollars a year ago.
“We just kept it going and we’ll keep it going,” he said.
Walmart in Bardstown will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
