FORT THOMAS, Ky. (WXIX) - For the second time in six years, a Northern Kentucky highway is closed due to a landslide.
Mary Ingles Highway is blocked by the landslide and a tree at Tower Hill Road until further notice, according to Campbell County dispatchers.
The latest landslide was reported at 2:45 a.m. as heavy rain fell across Northern Kentucky.
A Flood Watch is in effect until Sunday morning.
KYTC spokesman, Jake Ryle, tells FOX19 NOW that 100 to 150 feet of mudslide and a tree are blocking both lanes.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says Mary Ingles Highway at Tower Hill Road will be closed for the weekend.
First Alert Weather Days: Flooding risk with rounds of rain
Silver Grove Dari BarIngles Highway sits along Mary ingles highway.
Manager Jennifer Hutchinson says the rainy weather is hurting business at Grove Dari Bar.
“Even yesterday, there were some road closures because of trees down, so a landslide, depending on the location of where that is, that could curb transportation from our business,” Hutchinson said.
Along with fears for a landslide hurting business, Hutchinson says she’s also worried about electrical issues and flooding as rains continue to hit the Tri-State.
Hutchinson says they will do what they can to stay open during the storms, but they need the community’s support.
“Come down here on a rainy day - you won’t have to wait in a line,” Hutchinson added.
Several inches of rain in just days
At least four inches of rain has fallen so far and that could double by Sunday, according to the FOX19 NOW Weather Team.
The Mary Ingles Highway reopened less than a year ago after a 2019 landslide shut it down from Tower Hill Road to River Road.
State transportation officials launched a $9.1 million maintenance repair project they said would stabilize the area.
Kentucky Transporation Cabinet said the project would “preserve the vital connection between the river cities of Bellevue, Dayton and Silver Grove to Fort Thomas and surrounding areas.”
It included excavating, installing railroad rails, wall cribbing, adding multiple soil nail walls (retaining walls) to shore up the hillside, reconstructing the shoulder area, removing/replacing pipe, adding culverts, paving, and adding guardrail, according to KYTC.

‘Didn’t guarantee there wouldn’t be another landslide’
So if the state spent $9.1 million to improve the area, why are landslides still closing the highway?
“It’s a very hilly area and then you have a maintenance project like we did to shore up the hillside, but Mother Nature is going to do what Mother Nature does,” Ryle said. “
“All we can do is try to maintain it as best as we can. The project didn’t guarantee that there wouldn’t be another landslide, especially with the amount of rain we are getting.”
Ryle also noted that while, yes, a large part of the project was obviously shoring up some of the hillside crews also restored the highway so “it was driveable again” and resurfaced it
“When we see that amount of rain, this kind of thing can happen. We are doing the best we can to respond as quickly as we can. That’s always been one of those problem spots,” Ryle said.

BELLEVUE, Ky. — With a crucial connection restored in the Big Mac Bridge, Northern Kentucky businesses are hoping to recoup lost revenue and bridge the gap in foot traffic loss they've experienced over the 100-day bridge repair.
Five Northern Kentucky cities — Bellevue, Covington, Dayton, Fort Thomas and Newport — will partake in the Bridging Back Business initiative.
Bellevue Mayor Charlie Cleves created the idea for a week's worth of bridge-themed deals to boost stalled business, back in December.
"(The re-opening) hasn't really attracted the people back yet for a couple reasons," he said. "Weather is one of them. Nobody's really wanting to run out for lunch right now when it's this cold and nasty out during the day."
Northern Kentucky businesses discuss Big Mac repairs' impact and what they're looking forward to with the "Bridging Back Business" program:
Many Bellevue businesses, Cleves said, are only recouping 10% of the foot traffic they lost after Nov. 1. Overall, many lost 30% due to repairs shifting traffic patterns.
"It really hurt the businesses. I would estimate the businesses in Bellevue lost more than $5 million total, which is a lot for a little, one-square-mile city," Cleves said. "It was, it was really bad for them."
The Bridging Back Business Program will kick off Feb. 25:
"It definitely was lower, slower days. We didn't realize it until when the bridge opened up again," said Beth Saunders, owner of the Pretzel Place in Bellevue. "We definitely appreciate (ODOT) getting it fixed faster than they originally planned. We thought we would see a difference, and we really did."Saunders is one of 23 Bellevue business owners partaking in the first week of deals.
"It's going to be great. Everybody's excited," she said. "Everybody's talking it up, and it's definitely getting a lot of publicity. And, I think it's gonna be a very, very positive big thing."

"We're trying to amp people up to get out of here. And, I know a lot of businesses are doing the same, which is exactly kind of what we need, even if it is a little push," said Kyleigh Johnson, an adoption counselor with the Purrfect Day Cafe. "It's worth it, and I can't wait to see businesses hopefully thrive after this."
