Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. — A Shepherdsville couple was recently shocked to find out that they had purchased a winning scratch-off worth $150,000.

Vicky Barnes bought a $10 scratch-off ticket at the Bullitt County Supermarket on Clermont Road in Shepherdsville.

It wasn't until the following week, Tax Day, when Vicky scratched the ticket off while she was at her kitchen counter.

“I scratched the first bonus off first and it said, ‘$75,000,’” Vicky said. I called him, (Jamie), at work immediately. “I’m like, I’ve won like really big on the lottery. While I was talking to him, I scratched off the second bonus. Holy crap, I just won another $60,000!”

Her husband thought she was reading the ticket wrong. “Are you sure?” he asked repeatedly.

She told lottery officials she texted him a picture of the ticket. “I read the instructions and saw the max prize was one fifty,” Jamie said. “I texted her back and told her, ‘I don’t think you won one thirty-five. You’re going to win one fifty or you’ve read it wrong and didn’t win anything.”

“I thought I had won $135,000,” Vicky said, but realized she hadn’t scratched the rest of the ticket. Vicky eventually discovered she won the game’s $150,000 top prize.

Jamie got home from work and scanned the ticket using his phone to confirm the win. “When I scanned it, and it said it, I knew it was real,” Jamie said.

“I was confident that ticket was a winner but I’m still not sure it’s totally hit me yet,” Vicky told lottery officials.

Vicky and Jamie drove to lottery headquarters in Louisville on April 21st, where they walked away with a check for $108,000 after taxes.

“It makes life easier,” Jamie said. The couple said they plan to buy a car and put some winnings towards remodeling their home.

Bullitt County Supermarket will receive $1,500 for selling the winning ticket.

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. —

UofL Health has commenced construction on the newest location of its Brown Cancer Center South, set to bring critical cancer care services closer to residents in southern, central, and western Kentucky.

The $25 million facility, located near I-65 in Shepherdsville, has been years in the making and aims to make life-saving treatments more accessible to rural communities.

For patients like Shirley Hatfield, this new location is a monumental step forward. Hatfield, a resident of Elizabethtown, has made an hour-long commute to Louisville since 2017 for her lung cancer treatment.

"They don't know what it's like. There's days you don't feel like driving an hour. You know, there are days you're sick, and closer is better. I just say, 'Hurry up and get it done,'" Hatfield said.

Hatfield talked about the challenges faced by patients in smaller towns.

"That's the thing. Not very many people have (access). In most small towns, some only have one cancer doctor," Hatfield said.

With Kentucky having the second-highest cancer death rate in the nation and cancer rates projected to rise by 50% in the next 20 years, UofL Health sees Shepherdsville as a key site for battling the disease. According to Dr. Jason Chesney, this location will facilitate clinical trials and research that could bring cutting-edge solutions to rural Kentuckians.

"We're trying to solve the problem of cancer. And the best way to do that is to do clinical trials. So, we're actually going to conduct clinical trials right here in Bullitt County," Chesney said.

The state-of-the-art facility is set to include 16 dual-purpose rooms for exams and infusions, a cancer resource center, research labs, clinical trial rooms, and on-site labs to expedite patient testing.

"They're not going to have to come into a metropolitan area to get their care anymore. The doctors and the nurses, and the staff and the pharmacists are going to come to them," Chesney said.

The new Brown Cancer Center is projected to open in late 2026, marking a step forward in making quality cancer care more accessible to Kentuckians.

Salt River Brewing Company opened just in time for the holiday weekend after having to replace entire floor panels.

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. — Even as flood waters have receded the City of Shepherdsville continues to warn residents that certain areas like the park are still being cleaned up.

For a new veteran-owned business, Salt River Brewing Company, their original grand opening date was a washout as the Salt River flooded their floors.

After a quick response from the community owner of the brewery, Adam Kelty, said he's glad they could officially open just in time for the holiday weekend. His dreams he's been working months on has finally become reality.

"I've been kind of waiting for this for four months," Kelty said. "It's here so yeah it's just incredible to see everybody in here. I'm a Kentucky native. I was born here in Bullitt County and raised in Mt. Washington."

The brewery is the first of its kind within the Bullitt County city. Brooks resident Robin Wilhelm said she's been keeping a close eye on the establishment's process.

"We don't have a lot of nice options here in Shepherdsville," Wilhelm said. "So we were really excited to see them open and wanted to come check them out."

Kelty just retired from the military on April 1 after serving four years in the Navy and another four years in the Army. He said this new venture is his way of settling back home into civilian life.

"That day that we received our license we were going to open," he said. "We got our license last Wednesday. So technically we should open last Wednesday. So we got delayed about a week and two days."

But Mother Nature had other plans as a flood buried Shepherdsville underwater including the brewery. As soon as the floods cleared up Kelty said they started working fast to recover.

"It took about four days of everything drying," he said. "We laid the floor in three days. Additionally, it was about an extra $9,500 for the floor and the trim and a little bit of other damage that it cost. You know, some people have $250,000 homes they're trying to replace right now. So 10,000 compared to that is a lot better."

"It shows how hard they were willing to work to make this happen," Wilhelm said. "That's a good feeling. They want to succeed as much as we do."

The watering hole also partnered with a pizza company to complement their drinks. Co-owner of Get Fired Pizza Brian Arnett said Shepherdsville has needed something like this.

"We were kind of the last piece of the puzzle," Arnett said. "The way everyone showed out for us and we had a lot of volunteers come in and really help us pick this place up and get it moving again. What they did in days would have taken us weeks."

So if you plan to visit don't forget what those taps went through to fill your drink.
