TOWSON, MD — The Baltimore County Government will host its first-ever pop-up career fair on Thursday.

Jobseekers of all experience levels and backgrounds are invited, but laid-off federal workers are especially encouraged to attend as 15 county government departments will be on site.

The county also compiled a list of resources for federal employees, civil servants, contractors or nonprofit employees affected by the mass layoffs and government downsizing. The resources are available at bit.ly/baltcoworkforcehelp.

Thousands of jobs have been cut under President Donald Trump's push to downsize the government. Trump tapped Elon Musk, the world's richest person, to identify wasteful spending via the Department of Government Efficiency.

That has sparked layoffs at agencies like the Department of Agriculture and the Federal Aviation Administration. Other job cuts have hit the Department of Education, the National Parks Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among other organizations.

Gov. Wes Moore (D) fears that 10,000 probationary employees from Maryland could lose their jobs. Probationary employees — new hires and those who recently changed positions — are among the most common layoffs.

The career fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at StarTUp at the Armory, located at 307 Washington Ave. at Towson University. Free parking validations will be available for the Baltimore County Revenue Authority's Baltimore Avenue or Washington Avenue garages.

The Baltimore County Department of Economic and Workforce Development will provide personalized career counseling and job search advice. It will also review resumes and have computers available to apply for jobs.

Library staff will issue library cards and share information about borrowable Chromebooks and hotspots; free access to job-development tools such as LinkedIn Learning, Cisco Networking Academy; and Brainfuse for resume and cover letter assistance.

A library social worker will also be available to schedule virtual meetings for anybody seeking unemployment benefits.

TOWSON, MD — A new cancer treatment facility is fully open at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson.

The GBMC Sandra R. Berman Pavilion is a two-story, 70,000-square-foot cancer center over a four-story parking garage.

Construction finished in late 2024, and the center opened in phases over the past two months. Hammes, a real estate and development firm, announced the final move-in last Wednesday.

“There was a great deal of complexity associated with the move to the new Berman Pavilion,” GBMC Health Care Director of Project Management Rebecca Stover said in a press release. “The detailed transition and activation planning led by Hammes ensured the facility was ready and, importantly, that we were operationally ready thanks to comprehensive schedules and a seamless relocation plan.”

The Berman Pavilion is the new centralized location for the GBMC Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute.

The building provides outpatient cancer services. Specialties include the comprehensive breast center, genetics, infusion therapy, gynecologic and medical oncology and oncology support.

There is a new infusion center with open bays and private rooms. Other features include the integrative wellness center, a specialized oncology pharmacy and a breast diagnostic imaging center.

Along with the new cancer facility, Hammes was also the project manager for the new GBMC Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building that opened in late 2023.

That 117,000-square-foot addition to the existing hospital added a three-story atrium and two clinical floors.

“Our team of project management professionals and clinical experts were all deeply invested in the success of these major capital projects,” Hammes Health Care Regional Vice President Aimee Fogarty said. “It’s been an honor to work alongside GBMC and is rewarding to see how these project are already having a positive impact on staff and patients.”

The new Sandra R. Berman Pavilion and the Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building were both part of GBMC's “Promise Project.”

Hammes developed the Promise Project program budget and oversaw the design. The firm also facilitated the procurement of the architectural and construction management teams.

MARYLAND — Winter is winding down in Maryland with the start of meteorological spring less than a month away, but don’t plan on putting away the cold weather gear anytime soon, AccuWeather said Wednesday with the release of its 2005 spring forecast.

Meteorological spring starts on Saturday, March 1. Astronomical spring begins with the March equinox at 5:01 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 20.

Here’s how the private weather company sees spring shaping up in Maryland:

The mid-Atlantic region should see normal temperatures in the rest of February and March, although farmers and gardeners alike across the East need to be on guard against late frost, which can lead to damage to sensitive plants. Maryland generally sees its last frost between April 15 and May 1.

Spring temperatures should hover around average from March through May in Maryland, Virginia and the Northeast.

Spring Snapshot Across The U.S.

The first weeks of spring may feel more like winter across the northern half of the United States due to a turbulent transition between the seasons, Paul Pastelok, AccuWeather’s long-term forecast expert, said one of the coldest Januarys in years caused more ice to form on the Great Lakes, which will suppress the early spring warmup across the Midwest and parts of the Northeast.

At the same time, a persistent pattern of stormy weather in the Pacific Northwest is expected to mean a colder start to spring.

“The storm track in the West can retreat quickly and center more over the Pacific Northwest and western Canada by March,” Pastelok said. “The transition to spring will be near average or faster across the central Rockies.”

Temperatures are expected to warm quickly in the southern U.S. during February and early March.

AccuWeather said the seesaw pattern between milder spring air and bursts of cooler air could trigger some late-season snow across the interior Northeast and the Midwest.

The severe weather season is expected to be similar to last year’s with the frequency of tornadoes and damaging storms increasing as spring progresses. AccuWeather said there’s one major difference — the epicenter is expected to shift from traditional “tornado alley” to cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis and others in the Mississippi and Tennessee valleys.

The cooler air around the Great Lakes should tamp down severe weather across most of the Midwest and Northeast until May.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to be common across from the Plains through the Southeast. Florida may miss the rainfall and see drought conditions by May, Pastelok said.

The Southwest is expected to remain dry and heat up quickly, which AccuWeather said will allow drought to expand and intensify from Southern California to the southwestern Plains. The warmest temperatures of spring are expected to be found in Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas.

An ice storm is heading toward MD, prompting a winter weather advisory. Roads, bridges and overpasses will likely be slick and hazardous.

MARYLAND — An ice storm could leave a slick coating in Maryland from Wednesday night into Thursday morning. This system is among several winter weather events possible over the next week, some of which could bring light snow.

A winter weather advisory is in place for most of the Baltimore-Washington metro area. The advisory lasts from 9 p.m. Wednesday through 10 a.m. Thursday.

Mixed precipitation should arrive between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. for most of the area.

"A mix of light freezing rain, sleet, and snow begins this evening," the National Weather Service said in its advisory. "Precipitation mainly becomes a steady freezing rain tonight. Temperatures will warm Thursday morning transitioning freezing rain over to rain."

Regions west of Interstate 95 could see a tenth to a quarter of an inch of ice. Towns east of I-95 are slated for a trace to a tenth of an inch.

A "swath of light snow" is possible Wednesday morning "mainly north of the D.C. metro area," the NWS forecast discussion said.

"Plan on slippery road conditions," the NWS advisory said. "The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute."

Friday night brings another winter storm chance.

"Like the preceding one, this also has implications of a mixed wintry precipitation event. Before the warm nose arrives, a period of light snow is possible," the NWS said in the forecast discussion. "Low temperatures will stay mainly in the mid/upper 20s."

The NWS expects "a wintry mix of precipitation across the area Saturday into Saturday night."

"Precipitation looks to be relatively light, but even light amounts of ice or snow could lead to travel disruptions," the NWS forecast discussion said. "Most guidance favors much of the precipitation falling as sleet and freezing rain, with a changeover to plain rain Saturday night before precipitation ends. A little snow could also potentially mix in toward onset."

There are additional snow chances on Monday and Tuesday, but it's too early to know the specifics.

"At least one and maybe two wintry precipitation events appear possible during that time, withsubstantial accumulations at least a possibility," the forecast discussion said. "We'll continue to monitor this potential over the upcoming days, and refine the forecast as uncertainty slowly decreases."

New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday: Rain and freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet, becoming all rain after 7am, then gradually ending. High near 47. East wind 5 to 8 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday Night: A chance of rain between 7pm and 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. Southwest wind around 7 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
