NOTTINGHAM, MD — Construction is underway on a sushi restaurant at the White Marsh Mall.

Kanji Sushi will soon replace The Greene Turtle, which closed by late 2023.

The new eatery will span 5,934 square feet. It will have entrances from the food court and the outside of the mall. Permits call for new kitchen equipment and updated fixtures.

The permits were issued in November 2024, and they expire a year later. Construction is still in its early stages, so there is not yet an estimated opening date.

The Original Pancake House opened recently in the space previously occupied by Red Robin in the food court.

Lula Mae's Gardin, a southern eatery, was open in the food court by December 2024. It was closed temporarily, but it reopened this month.

When Patch visited the mall on April 12, there was a coming soon sign for a Sbarro pizza stand in the food court.

That day, there was also a sign advertising that Perfume World was coming to the second floor between Kay Jewelers and Charlotte Russe.

TIMONIUM, Md. —

Now is the time to start gathering some of those outdated, sensitive documents. Next Saturday, the Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland is hosting its annual Shred Day event.

WBAL-TV has more on the event and explains what people can bring and how much.

The Timonium Fairgrounds are one of two locations where people can bring their materials to be shredded on-site. It's a free of event that brings out hundreds every year with trunks filled with boxes and bags of documents ready to be destroyed. Clay Campbell is the marketing director for the BBB of Greater Maryland.

"(People can bring) up to four bags or four boxes of documents, and we will shred it for you. You can stay in your car, so you don't need to do anything. Just show up with all your documents," Campbell said.

The 18th annual Shred Day is on April 26 from 8 to 11 a.m., and people can bring their materials to the fairgrounds or the IKEA store in Whitemarsh. Volunteers will take the documents that will be shredded on-site by Iron Mountain, which is a secure shredding service.

"You can watch your documents be shredded if you'd like, on-site, and (then) you're out of here," Campbell said. "Last year, more than 1,400 Marylanders took advantage of Shred Day, meant to protect against identity theft. Maryland is always in the top for identity theft every year."

Eligible items include old tax forms, unwanted junk mail, unneeded signed documents, outdated bank statements, and old credit card offers.

This is a very popular event, and lines usually form early, but once it opens, it usually moves very quickly. They'll try to have people in and out within about 20 minutes.

Activate, which calls itself “the world’s first active gaming facility,” has announced it will open its first Maryland location at The Avenue at White Marsh. The White Marsh facility is located at 8165-A Honeygo Blvd., Baltimore, MD. It will be open seven days per week, with hours from Sunday through Thursday 9:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday hours from 9:30 a.m. – 11 p.m.

To secure a spot, it is best to book online. Walk-ins are welcome, but subject to availability. From Sunday through Thursday, admission per player costs $24.99 plus tax. On Friday and Saturday, admission is $29.99 plus tax.

A pancake house opened its first Baltimore County location recently. It's one of several new businesses at the White Marsh Mall.

NOTTINGHAM, MD — The Original Pancake House opened its first Baltimore County location recently.

The breakfast-all-day eatery is located in Nottingham's White Marsh Mall. The mall announced the pancake house's debut on April 10.

The restaurant replaced Red Robin, which WMAR said closed in late 2023.

The Original Pancake House has four other Maryland locations in Annapolis, Baltimore, Bethesda and Rockville.

Spinoso Real Estate Group in August 2024 announced the restaurant's plans to open, saying it would span 6,278 square feet at the mall's food court entrance.

The Original Pancake House was established in Portland, Oregon in 1953 by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke. The family business is now led by its second and third generations, and it has over 100 franchises.

Signature menu items include a large apple pancake "smothered with sautéed apples and cinnamon sugar baked to perfection" and the Dutch Baby, "an air filled delight oven baked to golden perfection and served with lemon, whipped butter and powdered sugar."

Omelets, waffles and crepes are also available.

"Our recipes demand only the very finest of ingredients, such as 93 score butter, pure 36% whipping cream, fresh grade AA eggs, hard wheat unbleached flour, and our own recipe sourdough starter," The Original Pancake House website says. "Our batters and sauces are made fresh in each restaurant’s kitchen."

The Original Pancake House opens daily at 7 a.m. It closes at 3 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. It's open until 4 p.m. on Fridays through Sundays.

Award-winning chef Zack Trabbold wants to make an evening in Fallston feel like a trip to the beach.

His Evolved Hospitality Group, known for its catering company and for opening The Local On The Avenue in White Marsh and The Local in Fallston, is expanding its Harford County reach with a new seafood concept. Natalie’s Seafood Kitchen will seek to break up the dominance over diners’ wallets held by the area’s local chains by focusing on modern takes on classic Maryland seafood.

“People there are hungry for independently owned restaurants,” he said. “Ours isn’t on the water, but it feels like it.”

Trabbold is eyeing a May 1 grand opening for the business named for his wife, Natalie, a seafood savant from New Jersey. Its on-the-nose ambience will include a blue color scheme, buoys hanging from the ceiling, and stuffed fish and live fish tanks adorning the dining area. A tiki bar inside called Nat’s Hut will have a thatched roof with bar rails in the shape of anchors to help further set the nautical tone.

It’s different from what Trabbold — named Baltimore Magazine’s best chef in 2022, 2023 and 2024 readers’ polls and Restaurant Association of Maryland’s chef of the year in 2023 — is used to. He’ll be trading in the tomahawk steak cuts served at The Local for steamer pots, and a focus on old-fashioneds for tiki drinks. But Maryland loves seafood, he said, and Trabbold’s been waiting to throw his ideas in the ring.

“We’re promising the perfect gluten-free crab cake,” he said. “I’d put ours up against anybody.”

Controversial, maybe, but Trabbold says you don’t need breadcrumbs for the dish; his cakes are bound by a sauce of eggs and seasonings. He also laments the use of filler or crabmeat sourced from outside the state, calling his own creation distinctly Maryland and celiac-safe.

Conch fritters and potentially some fusion foods like a soft-shell crab bao bun will also make appearances on the menu. But the star of Trabbold’s show is likely to be Maryland’s blue catfish. He anticipates ordering between 20 to 30 pounds each week to use for different preparations, whether thrown into a larger jambalaya or a side dish of catfish fingers. Trabbold also plans to build on his statewide winning recipe, which consists of a breaded and fried catfish filet served atop local vegetables and a rosemary, sweet onion, Old Bay hot sauce.

The focus on blue catfish comes at a time when the Maryland Department of Environment is encouraging the consumption of the growing invasive species to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay, though a USDA program that last year allowed Maryland to provide $100,000 to support local catfish purveyors was cut in the last month.

“We’re looking to help out the bay in anyway we can,” Trabbold said.

He hopes the business will give people the feel of a comfortable sports bar, with simple but unbeatable food. It will be priced lower than The Local and feel unlike any of his group’s other concepts, he said.

The idea for the new spot has been in the works for the last eight years, Trabbold said. When Uncle’s Hawaiian Grindz closed in the Fallston Shopping Mall at 2315 Belair Road, Trabbold jumped at the chance to bring his family’s seafood venture to life.

As a former Uncle’s employee, Trabbold knew he’d have to make some changes to the space. The chef invested in new equipment and furniture and tore down the previous luau space to create a larger dining area.

The venue will have live music and keep the kitchen open with a limited menu until 1 a.m. on weekends and a limited menu until midnight on weekdays.

“It’s a big step for us as a business,” he said. “But we know it’s not how big you get. … It’s about quality and longevity.”
