Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

CEDAR SPRINGS, MI – During the offseason, Cedar Springs softball coach Allison DeBoer received a surprise text message from star player Kendall Fisk.

The junior pitcher and future Division-I player at Purdue Fort Wayne asked to be a late addition to an open gym, after her private softball lesson canceled unexpectedly.

It prompted an immediate “Yes” from DeBoer and also showed the veteran coach just how dedicated Fisk is to improving as an athlete.

“She could’ve gone home and have actually eaten dinner at a decent time or something, but I think that’s the biggest reason why she’s been as successful as she has,” DeBoer said of Fisk. “She’s so determined and is committed to being her best.”

That work ethic, along with a lot of talent, have Fisk set to become Cedar Springs’ first Division-I softball player since DeBoer started coaching at the school in 1998.

“Kendall puts in a tremendous amount of work, and she does a lot of things that people don’t see,” DeBoer said. “She goes to pitching lessons; she takes hitting lessons all throughout the year, and she plays a lot of ball in the summer for a highly competitive travel team.”

Fisk committed to Purdue Fort Wayne in December following a sophomore softball season that saw her go 17-8 with a 1.30 ERA, a 0.914 WHIP and 297 strikeouts against 37 walks in 162 innings.

In her first two years of varsity ball, Fisk piled up more than 500 strikeouts, and she’s putting together a strong junior campaign, posting a 5-3 record, 1.71 ERA and 1.224 WHIP with 85 strikeouts in 49 innings, despite missing four games with a pulled hamstring that impacted her play even after returning to the lineup in late April.

“She was still pitching, and she wasn’t quite 100 percent, but she was hanging in there and trying to tough it out,” DeBoer said. “The last week or so, she’s been back to being Kendall.”

In her last three starts, Fisk has fanned 42 batters in 19 innings, while allowing 11 hits, two walks and one earned run, which came in a 4-0 loss to defending Division 3 state champ Evart.

While the injury slowed her down for a few games, Fisk’s performance in a season-opening win over state-ranked Jenison showed what she and her teammates were capable of at full-strength.

In that 6-3 victory, Fisk struck out nine and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks, while also hitting a two-run home run off Jenison senior and future Grand Valley State pitcher Alli Wright.

“We talk a lot with our girls about believing in themselves, and we want them to kind of see how much talent and ability we really do have, and I think that (Jenison win) really did kind of help them see what they’re capable of,” Deboer said.

Through 18 games, Cedar Springs has a 9-9 record against a tough schedule, but injuries to Fisk, shortstop Jessie Teesdale and center fielder Dakota Traxler have kept the Red Hawks from reaching their peak.

“Our shortstop was out for a couple weeks with a quad thing, and now my center fielder broke her finger last weekend, so she’s out for a little bit, but we’re hanging in there, and I’m really proud of all of them because everyone has stepped up and played different positions and is doing what they need to do for the team,” DeBoer said.

As a three-year varsity player, Fisk is now one of the more experienced players on Cedar Springs’ roster, and her leadership, in addition to her toughness, have helped set a tone for the Red Hawks.

“She has high expectations for the people around her, and that helps our team,” DeBoer said. “She’s a good leader, has good insight and knows when to speak up and be direct, but she also knows when somebody needs a pat on the back.”

In addition to her leadership, Fisk’s confidence has improved during her junior season to the point where she’s more comfortable calling her own pitches.

“One thing I’m really proud of her for this year is that she’s taking more control over her own game,” DeBoer said. “Our assistant coach calls pitches, and in the past, she’s been a little hesitant to shake them off.

“We’ve talked about how in calling pitches, your game has to be a collaboration, so if you don’t feel comfortable throwing something in a certain situation, we want you to speak up and advocate for yourself, and this year, she’s been doing that a little bit more. I think it’s good that she knows what she wants to do. She knows how she feels about certain pitches on different days, and she’s been really good about that.”

Fisk’s talent and confidence in her abilities in the circle have made her one of West Michigan’s top pitchers, but that reputation also comes with its own set of challenges, as she’s on the top of every opponent’s scouting report.

“It’s easier to kind of go out and surprise some people and start winning, but to keep winning and to keep being successful is a lot tougher, and I think that she rises to the challenge over time,” DeBoer said. “I mean, she knows people know how good she is, and I think that she kind of revels in that a little bit. I think that is a challenge for her, and she likes that. I think that makes her want to keep getting better.”

That mentality will serve her well as a senior next season, and at Purdue Fort Wayne, where she’ll team up with fellow West Michiganders Alexa Carter, a Spring Lake native in her freshman season with the Mastodons, and Ava Gardner, who is currently a senior for the defending Division 1 state champs at Hudsonville.

“I don’t want to say anything that’s going to jinx her, but I can’t really see her not going out and being successful next year and beyond,” DeBoer said. “I think it’s the commitment to being her best and the level of work that she’s willing to put in that makes her continue to improve.”
