SOUTH HAVEN, MI — After reports have surfaced of dead birds on the shores of Lake Michigan, the city of South Haven is urging residents to leave the carcasses alone and report die-offs of six carcasses or more.
Reports include an online posting from someone who observed 40 or more dead ducks and a dead deer on one of the city’s beaches.
Reports of dead birds have been increasing, the city of South Haven said in a Wednesday, March 26, news release.
The DNR asks anyone to report any die-offs of six or more wild birds at Michigan.gov/EyesInTheField. The DNR also encourages reporting wild birds or other wildlife that appear sick.
City staff will continue to monitor public beaches and remove any deceased wildlife. Property owners are responsible for the removal of deceased wildlife on private property, the city said.
Encountering dead wild birds
The city of South Haven advises the public to leave dead wild birds undisturbed whenever possible.
Dead birds should be left to naturally decompose if they are in remote areas where they do not pose a risk to people or pets. Fresh carcasses can carry diseases, but the risk of virus transmission decreases as decomposition occurs, the city said.
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is a known threat to wild bird populations, the news release states. While some birds may carry the virus without showing symptoms, they can still spread the disease. HPAI can only be confirmed through testing, and caution should be exercised with all wild birds as HPAI is easily transferred to other wildlife and potentially pets.
If bird flu is suspected in a domestic flock, contact Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) immediately at 800-292- 3939 (daytime) or 517-373-0440 (after hours).
Report cases of unusual or unexplained deaths among wild bird populations to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at 517-336-5030.
MDARD is monitoring and responding to reports of sick domestic birds and HPAI throughout the state, the news release states.

GRAND HAVEN, MI - The city of Grand Haven recently hired a construction company to reconstruct one of the runways at the city-owned airport.
Officials say federal and state grant funding will pay $480,621.60 for Reith-Riley Construction, of Wyoming, to reconstruct the 18/36 runway, or the “cross wind runway” that goes north and south and extends about 2,100 feet.
The Grand Haven City Council signed off on the company at its March 19 meeting. The funding will come from a Bipartisan Infrastructure Grant.
The last time the 18/36 runway was reconstructed was 30 years ago. Construction is not expected to begin until late summer and would only last a week, according to Earle Bares, manager of the Grand Haven Memorial Airport.
“Basically, it’s got a bunch of cracks in it,” Bares said. “If cracks become severe enough, it might be - just like a road - a little rough.”
The runways are inspected regularly, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently rated the 18/36 runway at 60% viable.
“Even at 70% or 60%, it does look like it’s in fairly decent shape, but when it gets to that figure that’s when the FAA comes in and says we’ve got to do something with it,” Bares said.
The center of the runway is especially a concern, as that’s where pilots line up their front wheel as they prepare to take off or land. If that center line wears down and cracks, it could create a potential safety hazard.
The airport sees approximately 11,000 operations - take-offs and landings - each year. There are 60 airplanes stationed and stored on site.
Most of the pilots are private, hobbyists and some are current and former commercial airline pilots that conduct pilot training.
The airport does not have any commercial flights but occasionally sees charter flights.
The 18/36 runway is used 15% of the time, while the main runway is used much more often. The main runway runs east and west and is 3,750 feet long. It was renovated three years ago.
The secondary runway is primarily used for smaller, general aviation planes.
“It’s very, very valuable at least for a small airport,” Bares said. “They may not be capable of taking off in strong cross winds on a regular runway.”
Bares said pilots in training will often fly in from Muskegon to practice on the smaller runways.
For comparison, Muskegon County Airport’s runway is 6,500 feet long and crosswind runway is 6,100 feet.
“Being only 8 miles apart, our airports are closely related and both do well to serve aviation interests of all kinds all the Muskegon and Ottawa County lakeshore,” said Ken Efting, director of Muskegon County Airport.
He said students from each location practice at the other airport. In Grand Haven, pilots practice on the grass runway and landing in a space not controlled by an FAA air traffic control tower.
“It’s often times the first airport that a Muskegon-based student pilot visits when they ‘leave home’ for the first time,” Efting said.

Skydive Grand Haven is located at the city airport, making up 35% of flights in the summer months.
People fly in during warm weather to access Grand Haven’s beach, the annual Coast Guard Festival and more.
People come from all around Michigan and surrounding Midwest states such as Indiana and Illinois. Some have flown in from as far as Maryland and Colorado.
The airport costs about $300,000 annually to maintain - half of that is federal funding and the rest is paid for by hangar fees and fuel sales.
The economic output of the airport is $24 million, with people coming into the community via the airport and then spending money on hotel rooms, food and more, Bares said.
An annual Trunk or Treat with planes event in October brought in 8,000 attendees last year, Bares said.
The airport is staffed during the day but not 24/7. Bares said pilots are able to turn on runway lights at night from the air.
The Grand Haven airport first opened in 1949. It used to host an air show in the 1960s that drew many attendees.
The annual Dawn Patrol event, where pilots are invited to fly in for a pancake breakfast, is scheduled for June 7.
Bares said he expects around 50 planes to fly in that morning.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The kitchen became a laboratory as Sherika Dennard experimented with a cabinet of seasonings.
After laboring for the day, she collected her closest family and friends to try fried chicken recipes she’d concocted.
“Granny, this it,” Dennard’s 9-year-old granddaughter said.
Others agreed, but those three words have stuck with her over the past decade. Dennard’s dream of owning a restaurant had come alive.
Rika’s Chicken and More, 736 Butterworth St. SW in Grand Rapids, is a chicken joint turning out fresh-to-order wings, tenders and fish. The eatery burst onto the scene about 18 months ago boasting “the best chicken in town.”
Dennard’s fondness for cooking came at an early age. She began perfecting her mother’s recipes at age seven, providing home cooked meals for her siblings.
“I took care of my siblings when my mom worked, and eventually I’m like, ‘I’m not gonna be here and just be hungry,‘” Dennard said. “My mom taught me how to cook, but everything she taught me, I perfected it. She started telling me ‘I feel like everything I make, you make it better.‘”
Dennard never stopped striving for perfection in her culinary endeavors. She first opened a short-lived, chicken spot around 2012, and then continued serving food at pop-up shops.
“The best chicken in town” isn’t only something hanging from a banner on the facade, it is a proud refrain from regulars and Dennard’s three sons who work alongside her at the restaurant.
All food offered at Rika’s Chicken is battered fresh every day and always made-to-order.
While Dennard won’t reveal what’s in the pre-seasoned flour. She says the secret to her chicken is “consistency.“ The mixture boldly features nine undisclosed seasonings that are meticulously measured.
Whole wings, thighs, legs and tenders cost $2 each. Wing dings cost $1. An order of gizzards cost $15.
The restaurant offers more than chicken. It’s 3-piece perch for $3, half-pound catfish nuggets for $6 or 10-piece jumbo shrimp for $11 are popular alternative options.
Fried sides include French fries, onion rings, okra and cauliflower. Soul food classics like mac n' cheese, spicy cabbage and spaghetti are available most Sundays on a first come, first served basis.
The restaurant serves $8 meal deals every day. On Wednesdays, customers enjoy $1 wings.

GRAND HAVEN, MI -- Odd Side Ales has become a mainstay of Grand Haven’s downtown, growing from a mirco-brewery to the beach town’s most popular watering hole.
Odd Side Ales is celebrating 15 years in business and inviting the public to a free, birthday bash this weekend.
The brewery is hosting two free concerts featuring 90s cover bands on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15.
The choice to go full 90s was an obvious one as the era has become “the new classic rock,” event specialist and bartender, Nick Cadena said.
“It’s people our age that have helped make this business what it is, make this industry successful and make Grand Rapids beer scene one of best in the world,” Cadena said.
Odd Side’s 10th anniversary party was postponed in 2020 due to pandemic shutdown policies.
This time around, the brewery is ready to give its customers what they want − what they really, really want.
“It’s a way to give back to the people of that age group who this [music] is what they grew up on. They like to drink their favorite beer and listen to their favorite music,” Cadena said.
The Chicago-based Fool House is bringing their MTV Video Music Award-inspired tour with Britney Spears, Spice Girls, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Eminem, Destiny’s Child and more on the setlist.
Show up in style to the red carpet starting 8 p.m. Friday. Guests are encouraged to dress up for the photo-opt, complete with a Moon Man trophy. Expect 90s trivia and awards for best dressed.

On Saturday, it’s all local love with headliner Dank Hill and opening act EASU.
Dank Hill’s alternative pop rock group is made up of three current and former Odd Side employees − including Cadena as frontman − and one barfly, trivia regular.
Locals will recognize the group from Grand Haven’s Coast Guard Festival lineup in years past.
Their band name is a mixed tribute to local hiking spot Dewey Hill, the dank hops of Odd Side and, a little 90s love for King of the Hill.
Dank Hill will be rocking out hits from Green Day, Weezer, Blink-182, Fall Out Boy and plenty of other Warped Tour-era favorites.
Behind the bar, guests can try the 15th Anniversary Stout, which has notes of marshmallow, blackberries and vanilla.
Die-hard fans can buy a three-liter double magnum bottle − they’re selling for $100 each while supplies last.
Back on the menu is award-winning imperial porter, Bourbon Maple Wishes and Pecan Dreams. Other barrel-aged brews include previous anniversary specials.
Hard seltzer drinkers can indulge in a 90s juice box-inspired flavors on tap: Blue Lagoon, POG and Rockin' Red.
The free event will likely be standing room only so get to the taproom early, located at 41 Washington Ave, Grand Haven.

GRAND HAVEN, MI — Book lovers can look forward to an unforgettable day of literary celebration this month as over 100 national and local authors descend on the lakeshore.
The Third Coast Author & Book Festival will be held on March 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown and Centertown Grand Haven.

Third Coast is hosted by Grand Haven bookstore The Book Cellar alongside the Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority.
“Reading has always been fundamental for me,” said Mike O’Brien, who co-owns The Book Cellar with his wife, Amy. “It’s one of those skills you have to have, and introducing people to the authors is a great way to personalize the books so people can read almost like a friend’s story.”
J. R. Erickson, L. B. Anne, Nick Courage and Megan Davidhizer are among the authors who will be in town.
On the day of the festival, books will be available to purchase at Harborfront Place, Tri-Cities Historical Museum and The Book Cellar in Grand Haven.

O’Brien told MLive that he brought the new festival idea to the Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority in December 2024.
He said the organization is about bringing the community together, so it was easy for them to back the idea.
“It’s bringing all these businesses together that normally, you’re so busy inside your own world, you don’t help the next guy down the street,” O’Brien said. “This is a way for all of us to pull together and have a great time.”
There will also be a ticketed VIP evening event from 7-10 p.m. benefiting Bluebird Cancer Retreats.
For $50, locals and visitors can meet with their favorite authors, check out the cash bar, enjoy a savory charcuterie buffet, and participate in a silent auction. New York Times bestselling author Abigail Owen will deliver the keynote speech. Purchase tickets here.
