GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Long Road Distillers is celebrating 10 years of crafting award-winning spirits from Michigan-grown ingredients on the city’s west side.

Since opening on Leonard Street in May 2015 as Grand Rapids’ first craft distillery, Long Road has remained committed to taking the “long road” — prioritizing quality, transparency, and a deep connection to local agriculture.

The distillery has grown to three tasting room locations in West Michigan: one in Grand Haven and two in Grand Rapids.

“Our goal from day one was to create spirits with a sense of place — to capture the stories and the flavors of Michigan in every bottle,” said co-founder Kyle VanStrien. “Ten years in, we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built and grateful for the community that’s supported us along the way.”

While the Thursday, May 14 exclusive anniversary dinner at Long Road Distillers’ Rickhouse sold out quickly, the team is planning more ways to celebrate throughout the year, including new product releases and special events.

Co-founder Jon O’Connor said the distillery is using this milestone as a launchpad for what’s next.

He shared that some exciting new releases are on the horizon, including AsparaGin, a bold new spirit made with Michigan-grown asparagus, and a line of zero-sweetener canned cocktails such as cucumber mint and bitter orange vodka soda.

“These are perfect examples of how we’re continuing to innovate while staying true to our roots,” O’Connor said.

Grand Rapidians, we've been living a lie.

For years, most of us have believed that the official Grand Rapids, Michigan, city flag was the one we see often - a bright blue background with the yellow circle overlaid by La Grande Vitesse (aka 'The Calder Statue', aka 'That Big Red Thing'). But it turns out that isn't our official city flag at all.

When you think of the Grand Rapids city flag, you think of the one above, right?

While that flag does display the official city logo (which is different from the official city seal, and that'll become important in a minute), which was designed by the same man who designed the Fish Ladder back in 1982, it's not the official flag of the city.

The official city seal (which is also on the official city flag) dates back to the birth of the city itself. It was designed 175 years ago, in 1850, by then-City Clerk Aaron Turner. (Yes, that means that Grand Rapids turns 175 years old this year.)

According to the City of Grand Rapids,

The seal depicts a hand reaching down from the clouds holding the scales of justice. The motto “Motu Viget,” means “strength in activity.” Centered on the seal is the American eagle protected by a shield. At the eagle’s feet are the points of arrows.

(Fun fact: 'Motu Viget' is also the name of the steel sculpture that the giant tire swing hangs from in downtown Grand Rapids.)

I'll be honest, I don't know that I've ever seen the official city flag in use anywhere in the wild (though you can purchase it on Amazon). It doesn't mean it isn't out there - maybe I just haven't been paying attention. Luckily for me, a City Commission meeting was live streaming as I was writing this, and I spotted one in the background right behind City Manager Mark Washington.

So, it appears that it does get used, but mostly in a very official capacity.

Personally, I prefer the symbol that we're all used to seeing, especially since it aligns with the logo that we see on things like street signs, maps, and parking structures downtown.

These Music Stars Stopped at The Intersection in Grand Rapids on Their Way to the Top

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids has won a combined $775,000 in funding for two transformative projects in the First and Third Wards.

The Grand Rapids Economic Development Department in a recent post said it won the grant dollars after applying for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) funding in January.

The RAP grant funding will support these two projects:

Four Star Theatre: One of the city’s most historic and culturally significant buildings is now in its second phase of revitalization, which includes restoration of the exterior facade and installation of a new Marquee.

The MEDC awarded the project approximately $325,000 in RAP funding.

The improvements are expected to bring over 150 events a year, create jobs and further establish economic revitalization along the South Division corridor.

Developer Marcus Ringnalda has dreamed of turning the old theater at 1944 S. Division Ave. in Grand Rapids’ First Ward into a “world class, multi-use cultural arts center that focuses on community.”

Ringnalda bought the building for $160,000 in 2017 with the goal of investing $1 million into renovations. The project has received a $100,000 grant from home improvement retailer Lowe’s, a $500,000 grant from the federal American Rescue Plan Act distributed by Kent County and other philanthropic support.

807 MLK: Led by developer Dionne Harp, this $485,000 project will renovate a long-vacant brick building at 807 Martin Luther King Jr. St. SE into a mixed-use space with retail on the ground floor and housing above.

The project, located in Grand Rapids’ Third Ward, received approximately $242,000 in RAP grants. The funds will help renovate the two-story building’s façade, restore its structural integrity, enhance its aesthetic appeal and improve its functionality for commercial and residential use.

The remainder of the $775,000 awarded to Grand Rapids went to administrative costs.

The two Grand Rapids projects were among 64 throughout the state that benefited from a combined $25 million in the latest round of RAP funding announced earlier this month.

“Today’s grants underscore our commitment to the state’s Make It in Michigan economic development strategy, supporting the people, places and projects that are integral to the growth of Michigan’s economy,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a release. “These investments will help create vibrant places that attract and retain talent, add critical housing, enable business creation and attraction, and provide resources for Michiganders and our communities.”

Administered by MEDC, the RAP program provides access to gap financing for place-based infrastructure development, real estate rehabilitation and development, and public space improvements.

Eligible applicants are working to rehabilitate vacant, underutilized, blighted and historic structures and to develop infrastructure associated with traditional downtowns, social zones, outdoor dining and public spaces.

Michigan is expected to see thunderstorms beginning overnight on Thursday, May 15, the National Weather Service said, with the chance of rain and storms continuing through Friday, May 16.

"A strong low pressure system will track into the Upper Midwest today, supporting active weather for the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys and Great Lakes region today and Friday," the National Weather Service said. "Widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast ahead of a strong cold front that will push east across these regions, and conditions will be favorable for severe thunderstorm development."

In Michigan, the band of weather will move across the entire state from southwest Michigan moving northeast toward the thumb. Heavy rain, hail, high winds and possible tornadoes are the main threats.

Thunderstorms are expected to roll in as early as 8 p.m. on May 15 from Lake Michigan, hitting Ludington, Muskegon, Grand Haven and South Haven before moving inland.

As storms move eastward, officials predict the storms will hit Lansing around 11:30 p.m., and Detroit between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. , according to the weather service in Grand Rapids and Detroit.

In the Upper Peninsula, the storms are expected to begin around 8 p.m. May 15 and continue until 2 a.m., the weather service in Marquette said on X.

There is an enhanced risk for severe weather in southwest Michigan, including from about Ludington to Lansing and back toward Benton Harbor.

There are hazardous weather outlooks issued statewide ahead of the weather.

"Prepare to change outdoor plans. Have a way to receive weather warnings and plan on where to seek shelter it if becomes necessary," the weather service in Marquette said on X.

The weather service said rain will persist in Michigan into April 16.

"On Friday, the surface low will linger over the Upper Midwest with persistent showers throughout the day," the NWS said.

Across the state, residents are predicted to see relatively warm temperatures during the week.

In the Lower Peninsula, northern Michigan is expected to see highs in the 60s to upper 70s, while central and southern areas are getting highs up to 86 degrees.

In the Upper Peninsula, highs will be in the upper 60s to 80s, with Ironwood expected to wee 80 degrees on May 15.
