MILFORD, Mich. – The PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships will be held at a Southeast Michigan park in 2026.
For the first time in more than 20 years, the event will return to Kensington Metropark in Milford, according to a release.
“We are so excited to welcome the 2026 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships to Kensington Metropark,” said Amy McMillan, Director, Huron-Clinton Metroparks. “We take pride in knowing how great the disc golf courses at our parks are, and how much local players enjoy them. It is awesome that professional players from around the world are going to get to experience that firsthand. We can’t wait to show players everything Southeast Michigan and the metro Detroit area has to offer.”
The 2026 event will be held from Aug. 26-30 at the park’s Toboggan and Black Locust South courses.
The Toboggan course was originally put in the ground by Discraft owner Jim Kenner for the 2000 event. That year, the event was won by Ken Climo in the MPO division and Juliana Korver in the FPO Division.
The Toboggan course is one of the most famous courses in the world, according to the PDGA. It hosts the United States Amateur Championship and has hosted the Discraft Great Lakes Open since 2013.
The Black Locust South course is set to get revamped ahead of the 2026 event, with lengthened versions of the 13 holes on the current course and five new holes being added near the Martindale Beach area, according to the PDGA.
It will also get some changes to be up to standards for Worlds, and the new layout will be over 10,000 feet.
Ledgestone is running the event and will work closely with multiple partners, including Kensington Metropark, the Detroit Sports Commission and the Livingston County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“We are grateful that the PDGA Operations staff has placed trust in our team to once again run the pinnacle event in our sport. We are incredibly excited to return the PDGA Pro World Championships to Kensington Metropark,” said Nate Heinold, Ledgestone CEO. “The 2026 event will be the third time the Ledgestone team has run the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, after successfully running the event in 2019 and 2024.”

Milford's getting a social district. Up to 12 businesses will serve alcohol

MILFORD — The village is getting a social district, five years after the state began allowing them during the pandemic.
The council has approved creating a social district that would allow patrons of up to 12 eligible downtown businesses to consume alcoholic beverages purchased at those establishments in outdoor public areas within the district, including three parks.
“It really adds vitality to the streets for special events, it helps to activate the two parks,” Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Ann Barnette said. “I see this as a benefit to residents and license holders. Ideally it will be in place by summertime.”
She stressed that the resolution the council passed in a 4-1 vote during its March 3 meeting must now go to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for final approval.
The social district will encompass Main Street from Huron Street to Detroit Street, as well as Center Street Park, Heritage Wheel Park, and part of Central Park, excluding the amphitheater and playground (with a demarcation line at the hardscape).
Within the district are 12 businesses that can apply to serve alcohol that can be taken beyond their premises in specially marked cups.
Those eligible businesses include The Bar; Sayulita's; Smoke Street; Charlie’s Still on Main; Czapski’s Kitchen; Novella’s Pizza; Coratti’s; Main Street Grill; Lei Ting Blue Pearl; Pettibone; River’s Edge Brewing; and the soon-to-come, Charlie’s Still To Go, formerly Milford House.
While it is unclear yet which businesses will participate, Barnette has received positive feedback from most, and expects the social district will be successful.
Council President Jerry Aubry was the sole no vote on the council March 3, saying one of his issues was the number of signs that would have to be put up in the village.
Social districts require clearly marked signs denoting a district’s boundaries.
Police Chief Scott Tarasiewicz also expressed some concerns during the meeting, including the possibility of residents bringing outside liquor into the district despite it being against the rules and wondered what kind of enforcement the council would expect.
“We can’t be everywhere at once,” Tarasiewicz noted, but added he is "neutral" on the subject and, “We will do our best to manage this.”
The council could revoke the district at any time if it were to decide it wasn’t working out, but both Barnette and Tarasiewicz said they had not heard any negatives from other Oakland County communities that have implemented social districts, including Farmington, South Lyon, and Northville.Barnette said it didn’t make sense for Milford to implement a social district when the state first allowed it in 2020 due to certain restrictions, but since that time, boundary issues have been relaxed.
“We don’t see a downside,” she said.

MILFORD — Milford House, shuttered for the past year and a half, is about to see a revival with new but familiar owners, a new name, and a whole new business plan.
Charlie and Tracie Berry, owners of nearby Charlie’s Still on Main, are in the process of buying the 10,000-square-foot building at the corner of Commerce and Main streets.
“I love Milford and want to own a piece of Milford,” Charlie Berry said. “Where I am now, I rent and will always rent. I saw an opportunity (to own a building) and do completely different stuff.”
Berry hopes to close on the sale by May 1, nearly a year after he first began pursuing the purchase of the property, which closed in 2021 during the pandemic only to reopen the following year with different operators. A small plates Mexican bar was added and then both operations closed a year later amidst an apparent identity crisis.On Monday, the village council helped clear the way for a successful makeover of the restaurant with approval of the transfer of a Class C liquor license to Berry.
Once Berry receives final approval from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, he expects to open the new business as “Charlie’s Still To Go,” offering carry-out items matching what is on the menu at Charlie’s Still on Main—including popular items like walleye, fried chicken, jambalaya, sandwiches and more.
He notes that the new location will offer more ease than his current location for doing increasingly popular carryout, but this is just for starters, Berry said.
In the section of the building where Banditos was, Berry is planning to host private events as a banquet space. With an estimated capacity of 100 in this area, he says it will be perfect for small weddings, showers and other parties.
This summer, he also hopes to reopen an ice cream shop at the location, with the confections supplied by Guernsey Farms Dairy and looks forward to having the open-air patios around the whole building open.
“The last thing to tackle” will be reopening the part of the building that was once the core of Milford House for a new total capacity of 250. Berry is renovating the main dining space in the restaurant, which he expects will take at least a year.
When it does reopen, it will have a different menu than Charlie’s Still on Main, which he promises is going nowhere.
“We love Milford and are looking forward to having a bigger footprint,” said Berry, who has owned Charlie’s since 2019, and previously managed Palate in the village. “We are putting roots down in Milford and staying a long time.”

Pickleball is going pro – and a local man made it happen.
Michigan’s first professional pickleball league just launched recently, and was founded by Chris Walker of Milford. He’s a Brighton native who previously played tennis and paddle tennis but then got into pickleball about three years ago.
Walker said it was pretty fun but then he was introduced to some higher-level players and found there were some serious players in the sport. From there, he started playing tournaments and has “been hooked ever since”.
Walker went pro and plays professional tournaments and won the bronze medal on the Canadian pro-tour. He recently launched the Michigan Pickleball League – the first ever professional team-based pickleball league in the state. There are five teams – the Ann Arbor Arctics, Detroit Vipers, Flint Tropics, Grand Rapids Rampage, and the Lansing Loons. Each team has its own unique logo and uniforms.
Walker told WHMI he'd been thinking about starting the pro league for a while and gauging interest from players and finally decided to make it happen.
For anyone not familiar, pickleball is a cross between tennis and ping-pong.
Walker says skills from both translate but it’s a sport unlike any other in that it transcends age and gender – meaning he could play with his parents or younger kids and everyone can just get together on the court and have fun. He said even a first-timer would be able to play within a few minutes.
Walker said the sport is very social and there’s a big community around pickleball, with everyone being very welcoming and inclusive. He said the sport just keeps growing in popularity and now the pro game is developed, with professional players on tour who are getting paid. Walker said there’s been really big growth year after year and pickleball has been the fastest-growing sport in the United States for the last 4-5 years.
Walker plays at the Brighton Pickleball Club but also hops around to others in Warren and elsewhere. He said just a year ago, there were no dedicated indoor facilities and almost nowhere to play – fast forward one year later and there are now multiple options. A new club recently opened in Plymouth, and the Northville area. The Brighton club opened last September.
As for the League, each team has four players - two men and two women. Each team plays each other and Walker says every point matters – brining a high-energy level to the sport and also for fans to watch. He said it starts out with men’s or women’s doubles first, then two mix doubles. If it’s tied for the 4th, then it goes to a single showdown. There’s a tie-breaker format if needed.
All matches are played at the Brighton Pickleball Club. The next is Saturday, April 19th at 1pm – with matches at 1, 3, 5 and 7pm. There will be four matches, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs in June. Teams are competing for the 1st place prize of $10,000 – which Walker says is the single largest prize for any pickleball tournament in Michigan.
Walker says the hope is to continue to grow, and sponsorships are always welcome. Matches are also always free and open to the public, and Walker says they would love for people to come out and watch. He described it as “high octane” pickleball and these are “not little golf claps”. Walker said they want people to be rowdy and have fans get engaged and “bring some noisemakers” – and it’s ok to yell and cheer when players score. Team merchandise is available and the tournaments are also live-streamed on YouTube.
