Although high school graduation ceremonies are still months away, school districts across Monroe County are already preparing for them. Early in second semester, most districts determine the ranking of students according to grade point average.
For years, The Monroe News has showcased the top 10 scholars in each Monroe County school district. NEW BOSTON – It’s a sweep for New Boston Huron.
The greatest boys cross country season in school history has been recognized in voting by The Monroe News sports staff with Lucas Kuhn winning Runner of the Year award and Cassandra Roupe taking Coach of the Year honors.
Runner of the Year
It was just a way to get in shape for football.
That was how Lucas Kuhn first got introduced to cross country.
“It was in the eighth grade,” the New Boston Huron recalled. “A lot of my friends were doing cross country. I just did it as conditioning for football.”
He quickly showed a talent for cross country.
“My middle school coach also was involved with the high school team,” Kuhn said. “He told me one day, ‘This is your thing. This is what you were made to do.'”
It certainly looked like Kuhn was made for cross country this fall.
He won the Huron League championship, led his team to league and regional titles and broke the school record while placing 12th in the Division 2 state finals.
Kuhn has been named Monroe County Region Boys Runner of the Year by The Monroe News sports staff.
“I really wanted to have a big senior year,” Kuhn said. “I’ve been working really hard and had some good time drops.”
Kuhn may have started as a football player, but quickly fell in love with cross country.
“That first year, I raced my buddies every day and that was fun,” he said. I liked that feeling of racing and winning. … I get what I put into it. No matter how good I do, I always want to get better.”
Kuhn eventually gave up the other sports and now focuses solely on cross country and track and field.
He got motivation for his final season of high school cross country by the way last season ended.
“Last year, I was sure we would make it to state,” he said. “I ended up having health problems and one of our other guys was hurt. It was the worst day ever. This year going to regionals we said, ‘We can’t ever let that happen again.’ It was our time.”
But even with this sense of destiny, the day of regionals was nerve-wracking for Kuhn and the other Huron runners.
“Everyone was kind of nervous,” Kuhn said. “Before the meet, I was telling everyone to be relaxed, but there was no way that we couldn’t get excited.
“When we finally won it, it hit us. This is what everyone had wanted for so long. … We all shaved our heads. We buzzed them right there at Lake Erie (Metropark).”
When the Huron runners arrived at Michigan International Speedway for the Division 2 state finals, their hair was gone and so was the pressure.
“Everyone was just kind of happy to be there,” Kuhn said. “Running as a team at state was awesome.”
Kuhn ran a school-record time of 15:26.3 to place 12th, topping his previous personal best by 22 seconds. Huron would end up placing 17th in its first team appearance in the state finals since 1979.
“It was definitely fun,” Kuhn said.
Kuhn has one more season of high school track and field to go before turning his attention to running in college. He recently committed to run at Oakland University, where he plans to study exercise science.
“I visited a couple of colleges,” said the son of Aimee and Matt Kuhn of Huron Township. “I really related to the coaches. They knew all of the courses I have been running. I felt like they really believed in me.”
Coach of the Year
Cassandra Roupe is a 1997 New Boston Huron graduate.
She ran track and cross country for the school.
This is her ninth year as the cross country coach for the Chiefs. She leads the boys track and field team as well.
Her assistant coach Don Morris also is a Huron grad who ran for the school.
“The biggest reason we came on as coaches is that we love the community we’re from,” Roupe said. “Sports were kind of lacking here when we were running. We wanted to help build a program we can be proud of and all the kids who when to Huron can be proud of.”
Consider that mission accomplished.
Huron just completed the greatest season in school history with the boys winning the Huron League championship, capturing its first regional title and qualifying for the state finals as a team for the first time since 1979.
“It really was a surreal year for us, record-breaking all together,” Roupe said.
Roupe has been named Monroe County Region Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year.
It’s not just school pride that motivates Roupe. She also feels a kinship with the runners.
“Cross country is a family in itself,” she said. “You spend so much time together and go through a lot of pain and adversity. That’s why people stay with it. It’s family, unity and pride.”
Roupe is proud of the growth of the cross country program at Huron.
“We’ve been strong the last couple of years,” she said. “We’re just building. I am really looking forward to the next few years.”
Roupe went into this season knowing she had two outstanding runners at the front of the pack in Lucas Kuhn and Luke Dulecki. Development of the other runners is what pushed Huron over the top.
“They switched up a little (at No. 3 and 4), but Kyle Biller and Cameron Crane were really close to each other all season,” Roupe said. “Tanner Kuhn (No. 5) made a big jump during track season and it followed through into cross country.”
A great rivalry with Flat Rock, a Regional champion in 2023, also drove Huron, especially in Huron League meets.
“We saw each other a lot,” Roupe said. “We’re right down the road, right up the river. It was definitely nice to have that competition.”
Putting the first regional championship for cross country into the school trophy case was a big moment for Huron.
The Chiefs were the No. 1 seed heading into the regional.
“We knew we were on top going in, but we had some struggles last year with our regional performances last year. We just were not where we needed to be performance-wise.”
That was not a problem in 2024 as Huron scored 64 points to finish 6 ahead of runner-up Chelsea.
“It’s been a work in progress,” Roupe said. “The guys put in a lot of time and effort building this.”
Huron was projected to finish 20th in the Division 2 state finals, but climbed up to 17th.
“They were very excited to be up there,” Roupe said. “It was a surreal moment to have that opportunity to go as a team.”
