Hooters is near the end of an era in Michigan — abrupt closures this week have left just one location open in the state.
The sports bar and grill chain closed more than 30 locations across multiple states Wednesday, June 4, including two in Michigan, USA TODAY reported. The restaurants in Flint and Taylor were among the closings. A Saginaw location is Michigan's last one remaining restaurant.
The move comes several months after the restaurant chain filed for bankruptcy in late March 2025, though it had said no locations would close at the time.

Which Michigan Hooters restaurants closed?
In Michigan, the Flint and Taylor Hooters closed June 4, USA TODAY reported, leaving just one Hooters location open in the state.
The restaurant chain, known for its chicken wings and servers wearing orange shorts and low-cut tank tops, began in 1983 and expanded to 29 countries before its decline, closing numerous locations in recent years.

Why did the locations close?
Hooters said in a statement to USA TODAY that the closed stores were company owned and called the closures a "difficult decision."
"Hooters will be well-positioned to continue our iconic legacy under a pure franchise business model," the company said. "We are committed to supporting our impacted team members throughout this process and are incredibly grateful to our valued customers for their loyalty and dedication to the Hooters brand."
The company did not respond to a followup inquiry on a list of closed locations or when employees were notified of the closures.
How many restaurants did Hooters have?
There were 305 Hooters locations, including 151 owned and operated by the company itself and a separate 154 operated by franchisees. The company has been closing locations suddenly since at least 2024.
What's happening at Hooters?
The company filed for bankruptcy in late March 2025 amid financial challenges. The Atlanta-based restaurant chain was then $376 million in debt and looking to sell 151 of its corporate-owned restaurants to a buyer group comprised of two existing Hooters franchises.
At the time, no locations were expected to close and Hooters said it would "continue providing customers with the guest-obsessed hospitality experience and delicious food they have come to expect over the past 40 years."

Midland Antique Festival
The Midland Antique Festival is a destination event for people across the state who love antiquing and looking for hidden treasures and trinkets. The event takes place over the course of two weekends each year—one in the spring (May 31-June 1) and one in the fall (Sept. 27-28).
Admission is $10 per person and children 11 and under can get in for free.
What: The festival features hundreds of antique and vintage dealers from around the country, according to organizers. There will be furniture, collectibles, food and live entertainment.
When: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 31, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 1

Owosso’s Curwood Festival
The annual Curwood Festival, which turns 48 this year, celebrates the novelist James Oliver Curwood, who lived in Owosso. The event features a midway, parade and Mr. Owosso fundraiser, in which candidates and their teams design and wear campaign attire to generate awareness for a cause.
What: According to the festival website, this year’s event will include a beer tent, a 70s and 80s Fire and Glow show with twirlers, glow performers and other family-friendly entertainment and a brunch, among other activities.

2025 Back to the Bricks Promo Tour
Each June, hundreds of classic car owners take part in the Back to the Bricks Promo Tour. The six-day tour is designed to promote the August Back to the Bricks car show in downtown Flint while also showcasing unique features and amenities in participating cities.
What: The annual promo tour features classic vehicles that travel together beginning June 6 out of Flint before making four hotel stops with five evening car shows across the state over six days.

52nd Auburn Cornfest
This year’s Auburn Cornfest is themed Rooted in Auburn, which is fitting after 2024’s event took place outside the Bay County community.
This year marks the 52nd year the event has taken place, and its return to its original home at the Auburn Cornfest Grounds. The festival was canceled in 2023 and moved to the Midland County Fairgrounds in 2024. Typically held in July, this year’s event was moved to June to accommodate vendors.
What: The event features a parade, carnival, live music and fireworks.

Flint Juneteenth celebration
For the fourth year, the Flint Cultural Center is partnering with community organizations to celebrate Black culture and heritage. The day will begin at 11 a.m. with the traditional Freedom March.
Attendees can enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities. The celebration also invites future Black artists, musicians, actors, and dancers to participate and connect. A variety of vendors will be on-site throughout the day. The event is free and open to the public.
What: Hands-on activities for children from the Flint Cultural Center institutions, live music, and “a few other special surprises,” according to event organizers.

Inaugural boating and food truck event in Saginaw
The inaugural event is scheduled for June 21, and will feature live music, food vendors, kids’ activities and more.
Local artist CJ and other guest performers will provide live entertainment. Attendees can enjoy a variety of food truck offerings. The event will also include children’s crafts and activities, along with gift raffles to benefit the Mustard Seed Shelter in Saginaw.
General admission grants access to all festival activities, with free entry for children under 10. VIP admission includes entry to the event and concert access, while VIP Platinum packages include two drink tickets and a commemorative T-shirt.

Frankenmuth’s new luxury hotel The Mill to bring high-end lounge to ‘Little Bavaria’
A luxury and boutique hotel is expected to open at the site of an old flour mill in Frankenmuth in early 2026.
“It’s going to be Frankenmuth‘s only luxury lodging facility. We think it’s going to be something special,” Zehnder’s CEO and Chairman Albert Zehnder said.
The Mill at Zehnder Park will feature four suites, each of which will have a fireplace, kitchenette, and a different theme.
While it will replace the old mill, the hotel will keep its memory alive with possible themes like wheat and rust as well as historical photos of the mill.
Under The Mill, visitors will be able to stop by the Landmark Lounge which will be open to the public and serve craft cocktails, zero-proof drinks, and small plates.

Nexteer Automotive cuts 80 jobs across Michigan facilities
Nexteer automotive recently announced that it laid off a total of 80 workers at its plant in Buena Vista Township and its global headquarters in Auburn Hills.
The layoffs represent a 2% reduction in the company’s Michigan workforce, and the majority of its Michigan employees work in Buena Vista Township.
In a statement, Nexteer Automotive Senior Vice President Hervé Boyer said the “tough decision” is meant to better align with current industry demands.
“We are working with our affected employees to provide support services as well as separation packages to help them through this transition,” he said in the statement.

Continuing the Irish bar tradition, this corner lot has deep roots in Saginaw
An Irish themed bar and grill in Saginaw Township is now open at the site of the former Patty Flemings Irish Pub, which was forced to close several years ago due to a fire.
Located at 6540 State Street, Holly’s Bar & Grill is owned by Al and Holly Beaudin, and it has been open for about six months.
The bar and grill’s menu features a variety of dishes, including soups, chicken wings, burgers, and flatbreads.
“I would describe it as a great place to eat, a great place to have fun and socialize and have a drink,” Al Beaudin said. “Even though it’s not the same building, there’s still a lot of history.”

This cottage bakery in Midland offers custom treats free of dye, dairy and eggs
A Midland bakery is serving dye, dairy, and egg free custom, cakes, dessert bars, cookies, cupcakes, and more.
Owned by Jaime Krueger, Simple Roots Baking Co. sells food-sensitive-friendly desserts, including gluten-free options.
“I’ve baked my whole life, but I had never baked and decorated like a cake or anything like that, so I’m completely self-taught,” Krueger said.
Krueger’s natural approach to baking and idea to open the cottage bakery were inspired by her grandmother.

A Frankenmuth bar beat a Saginaw County competitor by just $3 in 2024 liquor sales
With a total of $106,044, Frankenmuth’s Prost finished first on Saginaw County’s list for liquor sales in 2024, according to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission’s annual financial report.
The report considers the amount of liquor establishments purchased from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
Prost secured its first-place spot by generating just $3 more in liquor sales than Retro Rocks, which finished in second place for the county.
Saginaw Township’s Red Horse Tavern finished the year with $101,996 in liquor sales in 2024, earning it the county’s third place spot.

Downtown retailers seek voice in Bay City’s Feet on the Street planning
Two retailers located on Third Street in downtown Bay City are concerned about the impact the planned closure of the street for the city’s upcoming Feet on the Street event will have on their businesses.
Holly Lubkowski of Holly’s House, a discount store, and Rock Windt of G.T. Homestead, a gift shop, are worried that the decrease nearby traffic could mean less customers.
“I just want to make sure that, No. 1, during the 9 to 5 (hours), that our customers have the convenience of patronizing our businesses with not a lot of obstacles,” Windt said.
Feet on the Street typically spans from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. During the event, streets are often closed to allow for additional outdoor seating at local businesses.

Mid-Michigan bridal shop closing doors after serving brides for more than four decades
A bridal shop in Auburn that has been open since 1983 recently announced that it will begin the process of closing permanently in the next couple of months.
Unique Bridal Boutique, 971 W. Midland Road, announced its plans to close in a post on Facebook last week.
In the post, owner Pam Stieve cited her age and recent changes to the bridal industry as some of the reasons she has decided to close the shop after all these years.
“We are so grateful for all of the thousands of brides that gave Unique Bridal the honor of being a part of your wedding,” she said in the post. “We have made so many forever friends and made so many wonderful memories that we will always cherish.”
The family-owned bridal shop has already notified customers about its plans to close and has promised to fulfill any outstanding orders.

Bay County liquor sales: Which businesses topped the list in 2024?
Jake’s Corner Lounge in Bay City topped the county’s list of liquor sale totals for 2024 with $122,862, according to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. The lounge was ranked No. 350 for statewide liquor sales.
The commission’s sales reports are based on the total amount of liquor purchased from it by establishments
Ranked No. 412 in statewide liquor sales, Double S Party Store in Kawkawlin was the only other establishment in Bay County with more than $100,000 in liquor sales in 2024.

Bay County pitch competition offers $11,000 in prizes to local entrepreneurs
The Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is providing local entrepreneurs and early-stage business owners with an opportunity to win a $11,000 cash prize.
Applications for the organization’s Business by the Bay Pitch Competition are available here and have been open since May 14 and must be completed by Aug. 13.
Five finalists will pitch their ideas before a panel of judges and a live audience at John Glenn High School in November.
Throughout the competition, participants will take part in in-person business training workshops and network with other entrepreneurs and small business owners.
