MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) - Two EF-0 tornadoes have been confirmed by the National Weather Service in St. Charles and Atlas Township from the line of severe storms late Thursday night, May 15, and early Friday morning, May 16.
The Enhanced Fujita scale (EF) is based on observed storm damage to houses, cars, trees, etc.
From the NWS survey of the storm damage, the St. Charles tornado was 250 yards wide and on the ground for a path length of 1.6 miles. It’s estimated to have touched down at 12:05 a.m. in the vicinity of Dempsey Road and Walnut Street, southwest of the Kimberly Oaks Golf Club
It continued north over the Bad River and across Coal Miners’ Park. It lifted at 12:10 a.m. The maximum wind gust speed estimated was 85 mph.

The Atlas Township tornado was 100 yards wide and on the ground for a path length of 1.2 miles. It’s estimated to have touched down at 12:35 a.m. near Maple Avenue and Atlas Road. It tracked north of Goodrich and crossed M-15, then lifted at 12:38 a.m. The maximum wind gust speed estimated was 75 mph.
No injuries or deaths were reported for either tornado.

St. Charles community rallies together for storm cleanup

ST. CHARLES, Mich.— After a tornado touchdown in the city first responders, tree services, and volunteers did everything they could to help their fellow neighbor.
St. Charles Community Schools allowed people to use their building to shower and charge their phones when the power was out.

The damage from the storms didn't scare the people of St. Charles as they were just happy no one was hurt.
Instead, the community got together to find out ways to help.
First responders worked around the clock, logging companies were working for free, and volunteers showed up in packs for cleanup.
Thurston Logging and Tree Services were out the night of the storm cleaning up the town.
"We grabbed some equipment and came up town and started clearing roads. Everything we could but live power. So yeah we worked almost to 5:30 in the morning." Travis Thurston, owner of Thurston Logging and Tree Services, said.
One of the spots hit the worse was Coal Miners Area Park with damaged buildings and countless trees down.
Once again, the community didn't wait around for things to fix themselves.
"We had fifty people show up from the time frame of nine in the morning to 4:30. We hauled out somewhere between 35 and 45 truck loads and trailer loads of debris from the park." Paul Krzyaniak, member of St. Charles Park and Recreation committee, said.
Paul Krzyaniak posted on Facebook asking for people to help clean up the park so kids could play baseball and softball.
His post would spread like wildfire and before he knew it people were brining chainsaws, trucks, tractors, food, water, and pretty much everything else that was needed.
Thanks to the Paul and the volunteers the park was cleaned up and kids were able to play their games.
"Over the hours that passed the volume of debris just disappeared, it was amazing."Krzyaniak said.

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Multiple tornadoes touched down in Michigan overnight Thursday after severe storms moved through the state, according to the National Weather Service.
Tornadoes hit St. Charles, Gregory and Atlas, NWS said damage surveys confirmed.
An EF1 touched down at 12:03 a.m. Friday halfway between Stockbridge and Gregory, just north of M-106. It traveled 1.6 miles before lifting in Gregory at 12:05 a.m. Peak winds reached 90 mph.
NWS reported damage to trees, some uprooted and large limbs snapped. There was also structural damage to a shed roof near M-106 and Dutton Road. Hickory Ridge Farms also sustained significant damage to its barns.

At 12:05 a.m. Friday, an EF0 tornado touched down near St. Charles in the area of Dempsey Road and Walnut Street, close to Kimberly Oaks Golf Club. It traveled 1.6 miles before lifting at 12:10 a.m. and had peak winds of 85 mph.
Trees were uprooted, NWS said. The tornado crossed the Bad River, and there was damage at Coal Miners' Park. Some homes and buildings were damaged by trees that uprooted or fell onto structures.
Another tornado touched down in Atlas at 12:35 a.m., according to NWS. The EFO traveled 1.2 miles. It had peak winds of 75 mph before lifting at 12:38 a.m. near Goodrich. The tornado developed near Maple Avenue and Atlas Road, causing damage to trees.
WXYZ's Grand Rapids sister station, Fox 17, reported three tornadoes on the west side of the state that night during severe weather.
