Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

“My friend, the other club member, lives in Northern Michigan, and we just recently started playing the Lottery together whenever I am up north at my cabin,” said the club’s representative. “We bought a Fast Cash ticket together and weren’t sure how much we won, so we scanned it and got a message to visit the Lottery office.

“We scanned it on the Michigan Lottery app next and flipped out when we saw we won the jackpot plus $250,000! It was a total shock and took a while to wrap our heads around it. I don’t think it’s going to fully sink in until we cash our checks.”

The club bought their winning ticket at Talley’s Log Cabin Bar, located at 2981 Kneeland Street in Lewiston. Lewiston is about 25 miles southeast of Gaylord. The club members recently visited Lottery headquarters to claim the big prize. With their winnings, they plan to live debt free.

One of the top projected rising seniors in Michigan high school basketball will not finish his high school career in the Mitten State.

Wayne Memorial guard Carlos Medlock Jr., who helped lead the Zebras to the school's first-ever state championship game in the winter, will transfer to a prep school for his final year of high school basketball.

Wayne Memorial associate head coach Ryan Brooks, the son of head coach Steve Brooks, confirmed the news to the Free Press. Medlock shared the news, first reported by D Zone Basketball, on social media. Medlock did not respond to multiple inquiries from the Free Press on Tuesday.

"He's planning on going to prep school," Brooks said. "Not quite sure where yet."

Medlock emerged as one of the early favorites to contend for the 2026 Michigan Mr. Basketball award, given out to the top senior player, but he will not be in the state to compete for the award. Medlock led Wayne in points (24.9 ppg) and assists (4.8) while contending with center Austin Tory for the team lead in rebounds (6.0).

In the playoffs, Medlock battled through cramps to drop 30 points in a two-point win over U-D Jesuit in the regional final, followed by 29 points against Flint Carman-Ainsworth in the semifinals at Breslin Center to reach the Division 1 final. Medlock's high school career in Michigan ended with a 20-point loss to East Lansing in the state championship.

Wayne coaches became aware of Medlock's decision to leave around the time the state playoffs began in February.

"(Medlock and his parents) called me and their purpose was that they didn't want me and my dad to treat Carlos any different because of rumors that they were getting ready to leave," Brooks said. "Because we were entering the tournament. Everybody wanted a clear head going into the tournament. So, that's how it played out."

Despite the expected loss of one of the top players in the state, Brooks remained confident that Wayne will follow up with another deep playoff run in 2025-26, led by point guard Jaylohn Allen. Allen averaged 17.7 points and 4.4 assists to help guide Wayne to a 25-3 record.

Allen led Wayne as a scorer in his first year in high school, averaging 20 points per game, before sliding to point guard alongside Medlock, where the two played off each other in the backcourt.

"Jaylohn was like, I'm glad Carlos was our leading scorer and I was able to get him the ball," Brooks said. "He's a scorer but he was able to take the role on of being a point guard for many years. The roles are pretty much the same and we've got some young kids that are pretty good as well. And Jaylohn is a leader at heart."

Medlock joins other talented players such as Darius Acuff, who left Detroit Cass Tech for IMG Academy in Florida, as players who opted to go to a prep school rather than finish their career in Michigan.

Brooks said Wayne will have to work "twice as hard" to make up for the absence of a player as talented as Medlock, who has offers from colleges like Toledo, Murray State and Massachusetts. But there is no ill will from the coaching staff moving forward.

"We are proud of the kid, man," Brooks said. "He had a great career at Wayne Memorial and there's no doubt in our minds that he's going to be a great player wherever he lands. He's a relentless worker. He led us in sprints, conditioning, all that kind of stuff. He was first. He was always first. We are going to definitely miss him as a kid."
