ZEELAND, MI - A group of Zeeland West High School students fed up with half-full pep rallies have begun using an online point system to track and incentivize after school participation.
They say since starting to use the app during this school year, more students have shown up for pep assemblies, football games and school plays.
Ellery Koomen, a Zeeland West High School senior, said she and other members of the school’s Student Senate began discussing the initiative last summer, after they noticed fewer students showing up at school events.
A sudden drop off in student engagement resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, students across the state have said.

Time spent in and out of school buildings, combined with social distancing and masking requirements when students returned to in-person learning, took a toll on school spirit.
Koomen said Zeeland West’s student section - called “the swamp” - was not frequently full last year. The grades above her, which were older when COVID-19 hit, seemed to be more invested in school spirit.
Zeeland West High School, one of the Zeeland Public School district’s two adjacent high school buildings, enrolled 975 students as of the 2024-25 school year.
Jacob DeWitt, a senior at Zeeland West, said the “West Way initiative” was created as to try and boost student engagement.

Students can earn points, tracked via an app, for attending after-school events like football games and school plays, along with club attendance at things like Model UN.
“When kids show up, we mark (it) off … and because they show up, they get points,” he said. “They’re getting a little reward for their work. It’s just another way to encourage kids.”
Point values vary, DeWitt said, depending on the type of extracurricular event.
A football game, for example, might earn a student one point, while a performing arts event might earn them five. The goal is to incentivize the events that typically get less love, he said.
“We’re really trying to make sure that all of our student groups are getting the attendance and support they deserve,” DeWitt said.
Points are then grouped by grade level, with each grade competing against the others. DeWitt said the freshman class is in first place right now, with a little over 3,300 points as of March 24.
Students can also earn prizes at the high school’s pep assemblies.
Travis Spaman, Zeeland West’s high school principal, has given away air pods, gift cards and even a television, DeWitt said.
The result?
DeWitt said the West Way program has helped “reignite that spark of school spirit that we seem to have lost a little.”
“Our West Way pep assemblies, they’re some of the loudest assemblies I feel like we’ve ever had,” he said. “People get super excited for it.”
While the points system is intended as an incentive to get students to show up at events, DeWitt said he’s also seen students keep coming back.
“It’s really worked because (students think) ‘oh, maybe I’ll show up and check this five-star West Way thing out,‘” he said, “and then once they show up, the event is fun too.”
Koomen said Zeeland West’s spirit weeks have garnered more student participation, and the school’s homecoming dance that she helped plan had a “record amount” of attendees.
Compared to Zeeland East High School, which hasn’t yet implemented something similar, DeWitt said he can see a difference in school spirit.
“We’ve always been kind of even between the two schools,” he said. “The grades are very similar. They’re parallels of each other, (but) our school spirit has definitely grown because of this … we’ve surpassed them a little bit in our school spirit this year.”
In addition to the West Way initiative, Zeeland Public Schools’ marketing and communications director Brandy Navetta said the district has also created a “superintendent’s student advisory council” to help engage students.
Nominated students from Zeeland West High School, Zeeland East High School and the district’s Venture Academy meet regularly with interim Superintendent Matt Stolz about the issues most important to students.
Students on the advisory council can provide recommendations to district leadership about curriculum and extracurricular activities, along with sharing student perceptions on school safety and school culture.
The council started meeting last year, after the initiative was included in Zeeland Public School’s 2023-2028 strategic plan.
DeWitt said the council includes a “diverse group” of students from “all walks of life and all parts of campus.”
