Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Grandview man who admitted to being part of a ring that trafficked thousands of fentanyl pills has been sentenced to prison.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri says that on Thursday, May 15, Andrew R. A. Williams, 24, of Grandview, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl.
Court documents indicated that on July 31, Williams pleaded guilty and admitted to the conspiracy to distribute and to the possession of a firearm to further drug trafficking. He was an associate and co-conspirator of Tiger D. Draggoo, of Kansas City, in the distribution of fentanyl pills.

Draggoo admitted that he sold around 11,1200 pills to Williams between February and November 2022. He pleaded guilty in October and is set to be sentenced in August.
Investigators noted that Williams was also a supply source for co-defendant Alexander Barnett, of Lee’s Summit. Williams sold at least 418 pills to him between April 1, 2022, and March 5, 2023, and was paid around $5,467.
Court records indicated that Barnett previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 6 and a half years in prison on Jan. 30.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - UPDATE: 3:32 p.m.: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Missouri cities Marshall, Sweet Springs, Malta Bend and their surrounding areas until 4:15 p.m.
Update: 4:30 p.m.: A majority of counties have been removed from the tornado watch; only a few eastern counties remain as storms are moving through that part of the KCTV viewing area. The KC metro has been removed from the tornado watch.
A Tornado Warning has expired for parts of Johnson and Miami counties in Kansas and the Blue Springs, Independence and Grandview areas of Missouri.
A Tornado Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. for the following Missouri counties: Jackson, Cass, Ray, Bates, Johnson, Carroll, Saline and Pettis.
A Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 7 p.m. for much of Johnson County, Kansas, and Clay and Jackson counties, Missouri.
As of 2:40 p.m., Evergy had listed about 5,000 customers in the Kansas City area as being without power.
A wet day is expected, with a Flood Watch in effect with more rain and thunderstorms into the afternoon. There are even a few pockets of stronger storms possible, however, the higher risk for severe weather has shifted to the east out of the KC metro. Regardless, noisy scattered storms are expected through the heart of the afternoon.
The afternoon round is expected to pack a punch for some. Heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and hail are the primary threats today, there is a low tornado threat. The biggest concern at this time is flash flooding. There already have been reports of water rescues in Anderson County, east of Garnett. Multiple more inches of rain are possible through the evening, so flooding will likely be a concern for the remainder of Tuesday. These storms will likely form ahead of a cold front. That front will sink through the area from 2 p.m. to the late evening.
Rain still lingers in the southeastern quadrant of the area tonight, but it will be cleared by the time we wake up on Wednesday.
A Flood Watch is in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday, as we could see widespread rain amounts of 1″ to 3″ when it is all said and done. Isolated higher amounts are possible.
Temperature-wise, it’s a warm morning with temperatures in the lower to mid-70s. Interestingly enough, our high temperature today will occur this morning and will fall throughout the day. The cold front moves in this afternoon and drops temperatures. By 3 p.m., temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60s.
WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy with highs in the mid-70s.
THURSDAY: Pleasant with highs in the mid-70s. A few spotty showers and storms are possible, rain chances are 30%.
FIRST WARN FRIDAY: Scattered rain likely in the morning, but trending drier for the afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 70s.
WEEKEND: Highs in the upper 70s and low 80s. We have low rain chances at 20% for Saturday and 30% for Sunday.

GRANDVIEW, Mo. —
The elusive black bear that is on walkabout around South Kansas City is still on the move.
Wednesday morning around 12:30 a.m., the bear was seen on video in a residential area along East 114th Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri, in the Hickman Mills neighborhood.
"I was in shock," said neighbor Loretta Morrisey, who didn't know a bear was taking a turn about her block. "I have little animals and I guess I'll be putting them inside."
Bear sightings were reported in multiple locations primarily around the Grandview area Tuesday.
Black bear spotted in Grandview, Missouri; residents urged to use caution
At Grandview Fire Station No. 3, along Harry S. Truman Drive, a firefighter opened up the back bay Tuesday at sunset and saw the now-famous black bear just sitting by the trash dumpster.
"He looked like he was going to cross the road," Grandview Fire Capt. Ron High said. "He was looking back and forth."
High said he'd like to see the bear for himself.
"I mean I've been looking for the bear all morning. I hope that he comes back. I definitely want to see him," he said. "I think I will just do what everyone else did and take a video of it to say that I could show my wife. She's asked me like a couple times already today if I've seen the bear."
The Missouri Department of Conversation said it tags hundreds of American black bears in Missouri every year.
Currently, the bear population stands at around 1,000. But, this particular bear wasn't on the radar, and hasn't been tagged.
Biologists say the bear is between 2 and 3 years old and is exhibiting common behavior for its age.
Bears of this age leave their mother and wander until they find a space with ample resources to mature.
Many in the community are hoping the bear can get to a safe area.
"We certainly don't want him to get hurt," High said. "Hopefully, the Department of Conservation can round him up, wrestle him up or whatever they do, and get him back to where he belongs. I mean, I, we would love to keep him here."
The public is urged not to feed these bears and to lock up trash around homes. Also, small pets who spend time outdoors should be brought inside.
Bear sightings can be reported to the Missouri Department of Conservation here.
The KC Pet Project chimed in to encourage the public to "Be Bear Wise" and give it space.
"At this time, officials do not believe the bear is posing a risk to the public and expect it will likely move out of populated areas soon," the KC Pet Project said on social media. "The bear has not shown any threatening or concerning behavior, and the best thing the community can do is allow it to move through naturally without interference."
