Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

LIBERTY, Mo. (KCTV) - Concerns about a possible cancer cluster at a Liberty elementary school may soon be under the federal microscope.
Congressman Sam Graves notified Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. about concerns some have about the number of cancer cases at Warren Hills Elementary School in Liberty, an area Graves represents.
In a letter, Graves asked for help getting to the bottom of the number of cancer cases at the school.
At least six staff members at Warren Hill Elementary have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the past 12 years, according to information Graves sent to the agency. Another staff member passed away from liver cancer last fall.
WATCH: Grandview confirms black bear sightings in town
Graves said there are just 40 teachers at the school.
The building that eventually became Warren Hills Elementary opened in 2006.
Before the building opened the site was owned by several generations of the Warren family, according to the school district. The only things ever on the property were a house and a pond.
The City of Liberty approved adding a 120 foot cell tower to the school’s campus.

It’s that cell tower that concern some families and district employees, according to Rep. Graves.
Tests have already been done at the school and there is a Warren Hills Elementary website with resources and other information for families.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services conducted radon testing at the school in 2015. Results found no issues of concern.
Clay County’s Health Center conducted another health study in the fall of 2022. Again, the test showed no evidence that the breast cancer rate at the school was higher than expected.
Missy Roll has two kids attending the school and told KCTV5 she isn’t sure what to make of all of this.
“As a parent, am I doing the right thing by staying? I don’t know,” Roll said. “I don’t know what to do; I really just don’t know what to do.”
Roll said her kids both had teachers who were diagnosed with breast cancer.
“They were out of school; the teachers were for a brief amount of time and had substitutes but that’s really all I knew about it,” Roll said.
Roll said she does find comfort in the fact that the previous tests that were done came back negative. But she would like to see more testing.
“I don’t know if I’m sending my kids into a safe environment,” Roll said. “I want to believe I am. I know with the teachers, they are safe; with the other students, they’re safe. But overall, am I going to see in the next year that one of them has come down with cancer?”
Roll said the school has been very transparent about the issue, keeping them updated through emails and on their website.
In a statement, Liberty Public Schools told KCTV5:
“Liberty Public Schools is committed to providing safe and healthy learning environments at all of our schools and facilities. Specifically to Warren Hills Elementary, in recent years our team has been in close contact with the Clay County Public Health Center, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Children’s Mercy Environmental Health, and the Missouri Cancer Registry, as we have responded to specific health and environmental concerns expressed by Warren Hills staff. We are thankful for their expertise and partnerships and will continue to work with them as we move forward. Their work has been, and will continue to be, essential in leading and guiding us. In following the guidance and determinations made by the health agencies listed above, we have been assured that the school is safe for the Warren Hills community. Having said this, we also fully recognize that this school community has had questions related to this, and it is of the utmost importance to us to support them with information and resources. Throughout, our focus has been on the well-being of our staff and students as we have worked to provide support to the Warren Hills school community. An account of all of the work completed to date has been published and made available on the Warren Hills school website, which is updated regularly. We will continue to remain engaged with the staff, families, and school community and provide them updates, as necessary,” said Dallas Akerman, spokesperson for Liberty Public Schools.
There are parents and employees at the school still have health concerns.

Some have contacted Graves’ office. He wrote that they don’t believe the testing was thorough enough to explain the number of cancer diagnoses at the school.
At least one person with independent knowledge of similar situations agrees with those concerns.
Ellie Marks addressed the Liberty Board of Education during its April meeting. She lives in California, but her daughter lives in the Kansas City area and told her about the school.
Marks told the board that her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2008. She said doctors pointed to radiation from his heavy cell phone use as the reason for his cancer.

Since then Marks said she has studied cell phones and cell phone towers. She also founded the California Brain Tumor Association.
“We’ve been told by the health department that there is no cluster. I’ve learned over the years that it is very hard to prove a cluster. It’s also very important to understand that many cancers have very long latency periods,” Marks said during the meeting.
Marks also told board members a cell phone tower near the school may be the reason for the cancer cases at the school.
“I can say without hesitation from my knowledge and my 17 years of experience that the emissions from the cell tower at the school are absolutely endangering the health of staff, teachers and your children. It does need to be relocated,” Marks said.
ALSO READ: Kelce Jam to take a one-year hiatus, ‘planning ahead for 2026′
Marks also pointed out that limits set by the Federal Communications Commissions are outdated and based on exposures of 30 minutes.
“No one is measuring the cumulative exposure your children and educators are getting from 30 or more hours a week,” Marks said.
Kennedy has not responded to Graves request at this point.

LIBERTY, Mo. — Kansas City Disc Golf has staged the Kansas City Wide Open for 43 years, but for the first time ever it’s a Disc Golf Pro Tour Elite Series event.
“We’ve worked our butts off to make this happen,” KC Wide Open volunteer Sydney Klein said.
Klein and her fiancé moved to Kansas City from Iowa five years ago.
“It was in the middle of COVID, so we started going out and playing disc golf and that's how we met a whole bunch of people,” she said.
That included tournament director Jerry Patterson and his wife, Tina.
The KC Disc Golf community became Klein’s people, so she’s thrilled to play a role in helping the KC Wide Open grow.
“It's so surreal, I can't even put words to it,” she said. “It's one of the greatest things I've ever done, honestly. Getting all these professional players out and the community out fills my heart.”
Klein admitted that’s she’s been starstruck this week during practice rounds leading up to Friday’s first round at Stocksdale Park in Liberty.
“Oh, my god, everyone, just everyone — I've told people I love your YouTube channel and I'm just over the moon; it's gross,” Klein said with a laugh.
Forty-four women and 116 men entered the field for the KC Wide Open, which became a professional event in 2023 but only became a stop on the Elite Series, the highest level on the Disc Golf Pro Tour.
The winner after Sunday's third round will score a five-figure payday.
“We're really, really excited — and we think that we're going to have one of those higher purses, especially for this part of the year,” KC Wide Open Event Director Chris Timko said.
He said the Pro Tour has aimed to grow the game with more than 100 players able to earn a living playing disc golf.
“For years and years, disc golf was more of a hobby, something you kind of did on the side,” Timko said. “Now, you're seeing more and more players, with these larger purses, that can make disc golf a full time profession.”
More than 1,500 tickets have been sold for the KC Wide Open, which requires 150 to 200 volunteers to run each day, according to Timko, who said he expects to sell another 500 tickets before the weekend ends. They are available on the KC Wide Open website.
“One of the biggest pieces is that we're going to really get those elite players — top-five, top-10 players — that are going to come, and that's really what's going to drive those spectator numbers that are going to bring more and more people from the Kansas City metro out to watch,” Timko said.
The KC Wide Open hopes even bigger and better events are on the horizon.
“That's all we think about; that's all we talk about,” Klein said. “We've got a group chat going, and it's like, ‘How can we make things better for tomorrow, for next year, for 10 years from now?’ So, we never stopped thinking about it, and I'm so excited.”
Kansas City Disc Golf is also hosting the Liberty Block Party from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday in downtown Liberty in partnership with Historic Downtown Liberty Missouri and Visit Liberty.
