Regionally Celebrated Oyster Bay HS Alumnus and MusicFest Finalist Grace Curry Returns to 2nd Annual MusicFest as Guest Performer and Judge

(Great Neck NY June, 2025) Grace Curry, finalist in the inaugural MusicFest Challenge and currently a member of the nationally known Grove City College Touring Choir where she is attending college, is returning as a competition judge and guest musical theatre performer at this year’s second annual Great Neck Plaza MusicFest Challenge.

The professionally judged competition is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, starting at 7 p.m. in Firefighter’s Park located on Grace Avenue in the heart of Great Neck Plaza.

Curry, a regionally acclaimed musical theatre alumnus of Oyster Bay High School, gave a rousing performance of Chicago’s “When You’re Good to Momma” at last year’s MusicFest Challenge. Her stage presence and powerful, yet nuanced treatment of her musical selectionshowcased the immense talent of this young, gifted thespian.

Curry again wowed Great Neck audiences last summer as a guest performer at one of Great Neck Plaza’s always popular Bond Street summer promenade nights.

Curry has been involved in musical theater for more than eight years. In college, she has earned the role of vice president of the prestigious Grove City College Concert Choir.

Besides singing with the touring group, Curry serves as the choir’s public relations assistant, helping to raise the nationally recognized, prestigious choir’s talents to the awareness of music lovers across the country.

Curry said she believes deeply in the power of music and music education. Besides her love of performance, she said she hopes to help inspire the next generation of musical theatre performers and musicians as a music educator.

As King of all he surveys, Mufasa’s Kingdom offered our children at the Great Neck Saddle Rock Elementary School an opportunity to try their hands at depicting many of the different animals of the African Veldt. A collection of vibrant, colorful, and energetic art work from the students are on display at the Great Neck Library lower-level gallery, 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck. The exhibit will last until June 18, 2025.

The Great Neck Saddle Rock Elementary School’s art program involves children in the use of many art media in producing varied products, and it also gives all children an opportunity to communicate ideas. It is typical for a child on any grade level to have experiences with tempera paints, crayons, chalk, papier-mâché, ink, and other media. It is also typical for children to create pictures, drawings, puppets, prints, graphic representations, collages, montages, and a vast range of other creations. There is a balance between satisfaction in the process and satisfaction with the outcomes.

The area of art appreciation is also important. An appreciation of color, form, arrangement, and all the elements that contribute to the aesthetic enjoyment of any work of art is the keystone of the art program. Art teacher, Ms. Sloggatt chose her job because she wanted to share her love of learning about and creating art with young people. Following high school graduation, she headed to New York to attend Parsons School of Design, where she met her husband, Peter. Ms. Sloggatt also attended Otis Institute and received her graduate degree from Bank Street College. She is a practicing artist who most recently exhibited at the Islip Art Museum.

Joseph Golyan continued to work with patients and bill Medicare for more than $700,000 of patient care, prosecutors said.

MINEOLA, NY — A Great Neck gastroenterologist was charged with grand larceny for allegedly collecting more than $100,000 in Social Security disability and early retirement benefits between September 2021 and May 2025 while he continued to work with patients and bill Medicare for more than $700,000 of patient care, prosecutors said.

Joseph Golyan, 64, was arraigned on Monday on charges of second-degree grand larceny and two counts of third-degree grand larceny, Nassau County D.A. Anne Donnelly said.

Golyan pleaded not guilty, was released to pre-trial services, and ordered to surrender his passport.

According to the charges, in March 2024, The Nassau County D.A.'s office received a complaint alleging that the Golyan was receiving Social Security Administration (SSA) disability benefits while continuing to work, Donnelly said.

An investigation by NCDA, SSA Office of the Inspector General (SSA-OIG), and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) determined that he applied for disability benefits from the Social Security Administration on November 22, 2023, after previously applying for disability benefits in June 2021 and early retirement benefits in December 2022, Donnelly said.

Golyan claimed that he was unable to work and indicated to SSA that he did not have a bank account. The SSA approved the claim, and he began receiving monthly benefits of between $2,920 and $3,101, prosecutors said.

According to the investigation, on August 11, 2022, the SSA contacted Golyan regarding a report that he had been working. He acknowledged in January 2022 that he was allegedly working as an independent contractor/consultant physician with a yearly income of $6,000 working two hours each day, the D.A.'s office said.

SSA reversed his entitlement benefits because of his failure to report his work activity and determined there was an overpayment of $42,862, proseuctors said.

In November 2023, he again applied for disability benefits, allegedly claiming that he could not work due to injuries he sustained in a car accident in April 2023. SSA approved the claim for disability. Golyan received more than $66,000 from this disability claim, Donnelly said.

The Medicare analysis revealed that Golyan received more than $700,000 in Medicare funds for services he rendered from 2021 through July 2024, prosecutors said.

“This defendant allegedly claimed to be disabled and retired to capitalize on more than $100,000 in benefits from the federal government when in reality, he maintained a lucrative medical practice,” said DA Donnelly. “As he collected benefits illegitimately, Golyan had the audacity to continue to bill Medicare for patient care he provided to the tune of more than $700,000 in a three-year period, according to the charges."

Golyan is represented by the Legal Aid Society.

He is due back in court on June 20. If convicted, Golyan faces up to three to 15 years in prison.
