Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

For the 19th consecutive year, the Port Jefferson School District was named one of the Best Communities in Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation.

The accolade reaffirms the district's commitment to providing outstanding music education opportunities to its students. Since 2006, the Port Jefferson School District has consistently demonstrated excellence in music education, earning the admiration of the NAMM and educators nationwide. This sustained recognition speaks volumes about the district's dedication to fostering well-rounded education, in which music plays an integral role in student's academic and personal development.

Port Jefferson encourages student-musicians to thrive and grow in a supportive community of teachers, classmates, community and family members. One example of this is the district’s active participation in music festivals year-round. Port Jefferson recently hosted the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association (SCMEA) Division One All-County Festival, inviting more than 400 Suffolk County music students in grades 5 and 6 to experience the welcoming and supporting community built by Port Jefferson over the years.

Port Jefferson’s students are also active participants in the music festivals themselves, with 36 students districtwide taking part in the SCMEA festival across three divisions. Earlier this year, six string musicians from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School participated in the Secondary Long Island String Festival based on New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) scoring criteria. Junior Madison Testa even recently performed in the prestigious NYSSMA All-State Winter Conference in Rochester. She had the opportunity to play in an orchestra alongside some of the most talented musicians in the state.

The district’s musical community is so supportive that Port Jefferson even puts on their own festivals, including their annual Chamber Festival. The Chamber Festival is a free concert featuring middle school string ensembles, that takes place on the Long Island Sound’s harbor front.

The Long Island hospital has been honored with Healthgrades' 2025 Outstanding Patient Experience Award for the 5th year in a row: officials.

Jade Eckardt, Patch Staff

PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Mather Hospital has been nationally recognized with the Healthgrades 2025 Outstanding Patient Experience Award for the fifth year in a row since 2021 for delivering an exceptional patient experience, officials said.

The Port Jefferson hospital is one of four in New York to receive the award and among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the country for patient experience for a second consecutive year, according to a press release.

According to officials, the honor comes from Healthgrades, an online resource for information about physicians and hospitals, and reflects Mather Hospital’s ongoing commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.

Each year, Healthgrades evaluates more than 3,000 hospitals across the country to identify those that consistently provide an exceptional experience from the patient’s perspective.

"This award speaks directly to the dedication and compassion of our entire team at Mather Hospital," said Kevin McGeachy, Mather Hospital president. "We are honored to receive this recognition, which reinforces our mission to put patients first in every aspect of their care."

Find out what's happening in Port Jeffersonfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

To determine recipients of the Outstanding Patient Experience Award, Healthgrades analyzed data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey submitted by hospitals across the U.S. The 2025 award is based on HCAHPS survey data collected from January 2023 to December 2023. Only hospitals that submitted at least 100 patient surveys during this time were considered.

According to Mather representatives, Healthgrades applies a scoring methodology to 10 patient experience measures, including communication with nurses and doctors, responsiveness of hospital staff, explanation of medications and cleanliness and quietness of the hospital environment. Mather’s performance across these metrics reflects its success in creating a healing and supportive environment for patients and their families.

For example, 84 percent of Mather’s patients reported that their room and bathroom were "always" clean and nurses "always" communicated well, while 89 percent of patients reported "yes" that they were given information about what to do during their recovery at home.

Senior Emma Batter Sets Mark For Most Saves In Game and Career

Jake Mendlinger, Community Contributor

Emma Batter, Port Jefferson Royals goaltender and the two-time NYSPHSAA record holder. (Port Jefferson Schools)

Port Jefferson Royals varsity girls lacrosse goaltender Emma Batter recently set two New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) records in less than a week. She now holds the state record for most saves in a game with 28 and most saves in a career with 673.

During Port Jefferson’s game against West Babylon on April 30, Emma made 28 saves—the most in NYSPHSAA girls lacrosse history. (The previous record was 21, set by Hannah Lustyik of Sleepy Hollow in 2019.) Just six days later, on May 6, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior’s first save against Elwood John Glenn set the all-time NYSPHSAA record for career saves, which now stands at 673. The previous record of 665 was set last year by Allie Hanlon of West Genesee. Emma now looks to build on that record in the final three games of her high school career.

“Emma Batter established herself as a real talent in the crease from the first moment she debuted with the Port Jefferson Royals,” said Port Jefferson School District Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Nursing Adam Sherrard. “She has done some incredible things for our program and is incredibly deserving of her spot in the record books.”
