HILLSBORO, Texas (KXXV) — The three-day weekend for the 'Mallmageddon' at the Hillsboro Outlet Mall will be filled with activities.
BROADCAST TRANSCRIPT:"I've already seen a couple of people here that I see frequently," said Hillsboro resident, Abigail Valero.
Valero is among the many residents coming together this week to say a final goodbye to the Hillsboro Outlet Mall.
"I know when I was younger, my parents used to come here my mom especially. I just think knowing other people and old co-workers of mine and people I know from Hillsboro, I think they're going to actually enjoy being here again," said Valero.
Starting Thursday through Sunday, attendees can come out to say so long and farewell to the outlet. The three-day event features a variety of activities, including a carnival, a rage room, and a retro video game trailer.
The local Chamber of Commerce is calling this event one last legendary blowout.
One neighbor told 25 News she has nothing but great memories of the former retail center.
"So I grew up going back and forth and we actually we planted a church on the other side of the mall. So we can come over here to have our last hoorah. This place was popping it was really popping. We used to come here a lot," said Hillsboro resident Jordan Lowrie.
Valero said she hates to see the outlet ride out in the sunset.
"I think it has so much potential and I know if they did have more stores that properly where my money would go," said Valero.
"Do you think when this is all over, you may shed a little bit of a tear?" our 25 News reporter asked.
"I might, I might," said Valero.

Last night, the city of Hillsboro announced the demolition of the outlet mall on social media. The post garnered over 100 comments from our neighbors.
One neighbor wrote:
"Bittersweet, but I'm excited."
Another wrote:
"When we moved there in 1999, the Mall was full and thriving. But it has sat there empty for far too long. I now live in San Antonio but spent 22 years living in the area."
With all the online buzz, our 25News crew headed to Hillsboro to talk to some of our neighbors. The demolition announcement leading to residents as young as 11-years- old and up with lots of feelings.
"I don't really feel bad about it," 11-year-old Jessica Aguilar said.
Jessica comes to the mall often with her mom, and her favorite store is one of the few standing. She said that as long as her main store stays open, she feels okay about the demolition.
"We come here about two times a week when we're bored at home," Jessica said.
So here's the plan: they'll demolish about 75% of the mall, leaving around 20 stores up for leasing. But unlike Jessica, one long-time shopper, Gibran Jimenez, is saddened by the news.
"I feel heartbroken pretty much. I used to come all the way from Corsicana and spend the whole day just running around shopping with several family members and even getting some clothes occasionally," said long-time shopper Gibran Jimenez.
Jimenez isn't the only one with good old memories. Another neighbor went to social media and wrote this:
"So many memories at this mall. School clothes shopping, walking around for the fun of it, trick or treating, Monday Review initiation, and many others!"
City Manager Megan Henderson said it was time for the mall to go.
"We all had our first jobs there. I have friends who worked at the mall for a year. I have friends who worked at the mall for 30 years. This was huge for us. We loved it…it is over. Not just our mall but lots of malls are over," Megan Henderson, city manager of Hillsboro, said.
Henderson said the decision to demolish the mall was something they knew for years. They plan on tearing down the northern part of the mall. The demolition will range from around a million to a million and a half dollars.
But for Jimenez, the news is still hard.
"It's like letting go of something you had for a while," said Jimenez.

Emerald’s Offensive Surge Hands Hops 8-4 Loss
HILLSBORO, OR (April 4, 2025)—The Hillsboro Hops took on the Eugene Emeralds for the Opening Day of the season at Hillsboro Ballpark. The sun was shining, and everything seemed set in place for the perfect opening night. That was until Eugene scored eight unanswered runs in the first four innings. The Hops strung together four runs in the fourth inning, but the damage had already been done. Hillsboro starter Daniel Eagen (0-1) was pulled after pitching three innings and giving up four earned runs. Between both pitching staffs, sixteen walks were allowed, eight per team.
Daniel Eagen started strong, getting two straight outs in the top of the first. Eagen allowed a single to James Tibbs III followed by a wild pitch and a single by Charlie Szykowny to put the Emeralds up 1-0. Hops’ catcher J.J. D’Orazio threw out Szykowny to end the inning and keep the damage minimal.
Eugene starter Josh Bostick got Hops’ leadoff hitter Cristofer Torin to fly out and then struck out the next two Hillsboro batters to keep them off the board.
The Emeralds started scoring in the third, hitting back-to-back singles, and drawing two walks to put them up 2-0. A ground-rule double from Jonah Cox scored two more, giving Eugene a 4-0 lead in the top of the third.
Eagen pitched three innings allowing six hits, four earned runs, two walks, and struck out one in his first start of the season. Logan Clayton took over in the top of the fourth. He allowed a leadoff hit and a walk. Both runners advanced to scoring positions on a passed ball by D’Orazio. A sacrifice fly drove in two more runs to make it 6-0. After allowing another single, Clayton exited the game. He pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs on three hits. Eli Saul entered the game with two runners on. Another passed ball by D’Orazio advanced both runners who would score after Jonah Cox doubled to right field.
After eight unanswered runs, the Hops finally put runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Cristofer Torin singled to center field to get things started. A single by Angel Ortiz put two runners on, and a walk drawn by Ryan Waldschmidt loaded the bases. That was the end of the day for Eugene starter Josh Bostick. Bostick went three-and-a-third, striking out four. Ian Villers took over with the bases loaded, as Druw Jones grounded into a force-out to score two runs for the Hops. A single from Jansiel Luis put Jones on third, and a wild pitch scored another run. All three runs were charged to Bostick.
Josh Wolf took the ball from Eugene pitcher Ian Villers at the bottom of the fifth. Villers pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit and one walk. Wolf allowed a walk to Anderdson Rojas to start the inning, and a single from Cristofer Torin put Rojas on third. A fielder’s choice from Demetrio Crisantes scored Rojas to make it an 8-4 ballgame.
For Eugene, Josh Wolf pitched two-and-a-third innings, allowing one hit and four walks, striking out four. Tyler Vogel pitched the last two-and-a-third innings of the game, striking out four and allowing two hits.
Saul pitched one-and-a-third innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Liam Norris three one-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless and hitless ball, giving up four walks, striking out two. Sam Knowlton pitched one-and-one third innings, striking out two and walking one. The final pitcher to take the ball for Hillsboro was Jorge Minyety, who pitched the ninth inning and kept the Emeralds from adding to their lead.
Hops’ shortstop Cristofer Torin went two-for-four. For the Emeralds, Jonah Cox went three-for-five with four RBI. Eugene pitchers combined to strike out twelve. Eugene and Hillsboro allowed a combined sixteen walks in the match up.

Hillsboro has announced a new public art installation in Shute Park. The city has been looking for a new structure, ever since the Chief Kno-Tah statue was severely damaged by a falling tree limb in 2017.
The cultural arts division has chosen Becky Borlan, an artist from Baltimore, with plans to install a vibrant piece of public art in the form of a dome in Shute Park while complementing the style of the park itself. The installation is planned to take until mid-fall of 2025, and will consist of parts assembled in and shipped from Maryland.
Becky has done similar installations in the DC and Baltimore areas. Last week, she was joined by Karl LeClair, public art supervisor, and Julio Badel, arts education and outreach supervisor, at a booth in Shute Park to share the details of the coming project. I joined them on the 22nd of March to discuss the details of the project. The artist was here for three community events, where community members had a chance to share their favorite plants and vegetation from our region. Those shapes and colors will inspire her finished work before it is installed.
The piece will be a 24-foot-high dome made out of colorful pieces of laser-cut translucent panels with an 18-foot-high archway into the dome and four smaller archways on the other sides. The design is planned to be an open yet sheltered space where people can hang out and enjoy the partial shade it provides.
Becky’s other projects heavily use colorful materials; this is to be her first major project on the West Coast.

Project Description:
The City of Hillsboro seeks an artist to create new, original artwork to be reproduced for a large-scale space on the south-facing exterior wall of the Shute Library. The community has requested the artwork be colorful, warm, inviting and celebrate activities at the library, books, literary themes, the landscape in and around Hillsboro, indigenous perspectives, and/or the people of Hillsboro. A successful design may incorporate a combination of these themes.
The selected artist will create original artwork that will be digitally reproduced on vinyl, applied to sign board, and installed on a framework by a separate contractor. The artist will retain ownership of the original artworks, along with the copyright associated with the work.
The reproduction artwork is intended to be displayed for a period of 3 to 5 years, after which time the artwork will be removed to make space for a new artist opportunity.
The City anticipates selecting one artist to commission for the project. This artist will enter into a contract and begin the design phase.
