Heavy rains battered areas of Southern Oregon this weekend, resulting in widespread flooding and damage.
The National Weather Service reports parts of Douglas County saw record amounts of rain over a 24-hour period. As of Monday afternoon, sections of multiple rivers were flooding including the South Umpqua River, the Rogue River and the Coquille River. Deer Creek near Roseburg also hit record levels.
“It was a very wet event in a short amount of time, which really pushed the rivers… into moderate and major floods,” said Charles Smith, a meteorologist with NWS’s Medford office.
The storm, described by Smith as an atmospheric river, also hit Josephine County. McKenzi Polder in Grants Pass said her family had five pumps running to keep water from Sand Creek out of their home.
“My garage probably had four inches of water. When it got in the living room, we pulled up the carpet and there’s probably a half-inch of standing water still this morning,” said Polder who has a GoFundMe page for donations.
Images shared on social media show widespread flooding in the town of Drain in Douglas County. And authorities posted video of an unoccupied RV carried away by the Sixes Rivers near the coast.
Jackson County authorities also reported that a woman drowned in Central Point after storm waters swept her into Kane Creek. The victim was clearing branches from a culvert when her waders filled with water, pulling her under.
Northern California saw landslides in Humboldt County on Highway 36. Slides were also reported on Highway 42, 42S and 138W on the Oregon side.
The forecast for Southern Oregon calls for more rain but meteorologists say the worst of the storm is over.
“It’s more or less on its way out right now,” said Smith.

The Oregon State Marine Board limited fast-moving jet boats on the Upper Rogue River after a long and contentious battle between anglers, environmental groups and commercial jet boat drivers.
The decision, made at a meeting Jan. 23, limits motorboats to an engine of 15 horsepower or lower on the river above Dodge Bridge County Park to Lost Creek Dam.
In addition, if the river drops below a three day average flow of 1,350 cubic feet per second, use of a motor in excess of 15 horsepower is restricted between Fishers Ferry County Park and Dodge Bridge County Park.
"Restriction shall maintain in place until the three-day average flow increases above 1350 cfs," the Marine Board said.
Limits were also included on charter boats, which includes a "motorized boat used to carry seven or more passengers for hire for angling, sightseeing or other recreational purposes," OSMB said.
Rogue Jet Boat Adventures, which has operated tours in the area, told the Rogue Valley Times they are "concerned about the decisions limiting access to a section of the river that provides invaluable opportunities for school groups, veterans, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities — people who otherwise may not have the chance to experience this area of natural beauty and educational significance," owner Taylor Grimes told the newspaper.
Grimes can still operate jet boat tours on the river in a modified way and in modified locations.
Environmental groups and anglers who said the jet boats degraded protection, water quality and safety celebrated the decision.
“Rogue Riverkeeper believes this rule-making highlights the importance of protecting water quality and aquatic habitat and building policy resilience in the face of climate change as our environment faces changes in use as well as the impacts that climate change itself will bring,” the group wrote.
The Marine Board said it would review the rules after one year and again the following year.
"At the five-year mark, the rule will again be reviewed to ensure it is having the intended effect," the agency said in a news release.
"Marine Board members spent over a year learning about this issue and underscored the importance of enacting rules that balance safety, opportunity, environmental concerns and preserving historical boat uses," the agency said.
The Marine Board said it would begin installing signs notifying people of the change at parks where it applies. Those locations include:
Permanent signs with graphics outlining specific rule segments on the river are in development and will replace the temporary signs by the spring.
"The Marine Board will ramp up education and outreach efforts during the first year of rule implementation," the agency said in a news release.

Agencies and conservation organizations are inviting the public to the Provolt Recreation site, 14171 Williams Highway, on Saturday for guided bird walks, educational displays and other activities in celebration of World Migratory Bird Day.
Guided walks start at 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m. while activities and displays will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event is held in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Applegate Partnership & Watershed Council, Pollinator Pals and the Siskiyou Audubon Society. One aim of the event is to focus attention on creating bird-friendly communities.

Annual Rogue River clean-up is Saturday
The 33rd Annual Rogue River Clean-Up is set from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in Josephine County. Meet at Hog Creek County Park, 4719 Galice Rd, Merlin, and finish with an after-party at Indian Mary County Park.
There will be trash pickup and weed pulling as well as lunch, snacks and water provided. Also, there will be a raffle, giveaways and information booths.
Hog Creek County Park is about 5 miles west of Galice, at 4719 Galice Road. Indian Mary County Park is about 2 miles farther west, at 7100 Galice Road.

ODFW hosts archery event
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a three-dimensional archery event at Denman Wildlife Area near White City on Saturday and Sunday. The event has 40 3D animal targets on a 2-mile course along trails and gravel roads.
Participants shoot up to two shots per target. Distances vary from 10 to 60 yards. Archers can use either compound or recurve bows.
Staggered start times begin at 8 a.m. and the last archer is out at 1 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and free for children 17 and younger. The wildlife area is at 1495 E. Gregory Road.

Lost Creek, Applegate lakes well stocked
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife reports that Applegate and Lost Creek reservoirs have been stocked with a good number of legal and trophy-sized trout and that larger holdover trout should be available.
“Fishing should be very good,” the department stated in its May 8 weekly recreation report.
In the Rogue River below Lost Creek Lake, hatchery spring chinook and hatchery winter steelhead are available, according to the department.
“Spring chinook numbers continue to rise in the upper river and hatchery chinook are broadly distributed,” according to the report. “But don’t forget that winter steelhead are still available and being caught.”
The Applegate River below Applegate Lake is closed to fishing until May 22.
Lakes and ponds scheduled to be stocked last week included Emigrant Lake, Reinhart Volunteer Park pond and The Expo, pond 1. Due for stocking this week are Medco Pond, Lost Creek Lake, Fish Lake, Lake Selmac, Galesville Reservoir and Lemolo Reservoir.

Registration open for Applegate summer camp
The Applegate Partnership & Watershed Council is hosting an outdoor summer camp for children ages 5-11. The camp runs from June 16-July 18 and is held at Cantrall Buckley County Park. Cost is $180 per week.
