ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA —Nearly 800 residents responded to a community survey about 150 people attended a recent community meeting about the SPS Technologies fire.
Abington Township Ward 13 Commissioner Bill Bole said the recent meeting —hosted by the Greater Glenside Civic Association, Commissioner Matt Vahey, and Bole —said residents raised questions about personal safety (especially but not exclusively downwind), the environmental and economic impact from the fire and future plans.
Nearly 70 area fire companies last month fought the SPS Technologies fire on Highland Avenue that damaged the company's 600,000-square-foot building. Since the fire, SPS Technologies announced that it was laying off 250 of its 500 employees.
Bole —who serves as one of the commissioners where the fire took place —said that residents expressed concerns at the meeting about several “nuisance” issues, including when would Highland Avenue reopen, how is traffic being controlled, and floodlights that stay on late at night.
Bole said residents did receive some answers to their concerns:

Bole said the survey data shared at the meeting is being prepared to be shared in full, publicly.
"Residents will have access to the answers submitted," Bole said. "Everything will be depersonalized and emails not included (for obvious reasons)."
Bole said that more community meetings will be scheduled.
"It was suggested that we have a meeting specifically for people who want to use community gatherings to heal, as this was very traumatizing for many," Bole said. "Plans are already underway for such a meeting as a result of someone hearing this feedback and offering to host."

JENKINTOWN, PA —The new Giant Food Store will open in the borough on Friday.
The Giant Company this week announced the opening date for its new location at 93 York Road.
Doors will open at the new 50,000-square-foot store at 8 p.m. on Friday. The store will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, the company said.
More than 100 full- and part-time jobs are being created with the opening, the company said.
“While we have had a presence in Montgomery County for decades, this marks the first GIANT in Jenkintown,” said John Ruane, president of the Giant Company. “Customers can expect the freshness, value, and quality that GIANT is known for, combined with brand new offerings, increased product variety, and plenty of fresh ideas no matter what type of meal or celebration they are shopping for.”
Dave Flanigan, a 32-year grocery veteran, has been appointed to serve as store manager.

Team members and community leaders will gather for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 4.
As part of the celebration, the first 200 customers will receive a Giant reusable shopping bag filled with product samples and other grand opening savings.

The new store also offers a large Kosher product selection, including fresh meat, dairy, and frozen products. PHILADELPHIA REGION —Jefferson Health has failed to reach an agreement with Cigna, making the healthcare system out-of-network for insurance carriers after 20 years of partnership.
"Despite our best efforts to reach a fair agreement, Jefferson Health and Cigna have been unable to finalize a new contract," Jefferson Health said in a statement.
As a result, as of Saturday, Jefferson Health is now considered out-of-network for Cigna commercial members.
Jefferson Health operates numerous facilities in the Philadelphia region, including Abington Hospital and Jefferson Bucks Hospital in Falls Township. It operates more than two dozen hospitals, several medical practices in the area, urgent care facilities, rehab centers, outpatient care facilities and more.

"We understand that this news may cause concern, and we want to reassure our patients that we remain committed to providing high-quality care," Jefferson Health said. "We continue to negotiate in good faith with Cigna to reach a resolution that is fair and sustainable for our patients, providers, and community."
Jefferson Health has been an in-network provider for Cigna members for 20 years.
Both sides are pointing fingers as to who is to blame for the failure to come to an agreement.
Jefferson Health said the current contract with Cigna did not reflect the true cost of delivering care. According to the healthcare provider, Cigna’s reimbursement rates have increased by only 3 percent since 2020, while the Hospital Wage Index has risen 20 percent and CPI-U has increased 21 percent.
However, in a statement, Cigna said that Jefferson Health was to blame for the contract breakdown.
"Unfortunately, Jefferson Health chose to leave our network due to their unreasonable rate hike demands that would raise health care costs for the people we serve," a Cigna spokesperson said. "We will continue to negotiate with Jefferson Health to reach a fair agreement that will keep health care affordable for patients..”
Emergency care remains in-network for all Cigna members, regardless of contract status. Some patients may qualify for Transition of Care programs to maintain in-network benefits. Additionally, many Cigna plans include out-of-network benefits that may allow continued access to Jefferson providers.
Jefferson Health said Cigna members should contact Cigna directly to understand their coverage options and advocate for continued access to Jefferson Health providers.
"Our priority remains delivering the highest quality care while securing fair agreements that support our mission," Jefferson Health said. "We appreciate your patience and support as we work toward a resolution."
