What Tools Does Disaster Response Use for Water Damage Clean-Up?

We only use the best equipment! With our extensive experience in the Ellwood City restoration industry, we've acquired state-of-the-art tools designed to tackle a wide range of challenges. This experience has also allowed our technicians to identify which type of equipment is best for a particular situation. Some of the most common water damage restoration tools we use include:

Infrared

Infrared Cameras

Our infrared cameras give us the ability to see moisture in walls and ceilings that is not visible to the naked eye, almost like having "X-ray" vision. This capability allows us to detect and address trapped and hidden humidity, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.

Moisture

Moisture Meters

We use moisture meters to measure moisture levels in cellulose material. Before and after the drying process, we will conduct moisture readings in all areas of your property. If we detect moisture in an unaffected area of your building, we'll get to work quickly to dry it.

Air Movers

Air Movers

This equipment is designed to work in conjunction with our dehumidifiers. While our dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and convert it to a liquid, our Air Mover helps to circulate this moisture in the air so that the dehumidifier can effectively remove it.

Generators

Ozone Generators

These advanced tools enable us to cleanse affected surfaces and the air in a more effective manner. Ozone Generators work by causing oxygen molecules to implode, making them a valuable deodorization tool.

Xtractor

Xtreme Xtractor

This tool is great for tackling tough moisture after water damage. It allows us to apply direct pressure to a surface, like a carpet, that has soaked up water. The pressure helps draw out the water, making it easier to remove.

Top 3 Types of Water Damage You Should Know About

Water damage can strike without warning and can wreak havoc on your property, leaving you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or an overflowing appliance, your property needs immediate water damage clean-up in Ellwood City, PA, to prevent further harm. Here are the top three types of water damage you should know about:

Clean Water Damage

Clean Water Damage

Clean

This type of water damage happens from a "clean" source, such as rainwater or a broken pipe in your home. It's easier to clean up than others on this list but can still cause extensive property damage when ignored.

Gray Water Damage

Gray Water Damage

Gray-Water

Gray water damage stems from appliances such as toilets without feces, washing machines, and dishwashers. Gray water sometimes contains bacteria and contaminants that can make you or your family sick.

Black Water Damage

Black Water Damage

Black-Water

The name alone indicates the severity of this type of water damage. It's caused by backed-up sewer lines, river flooding, and standing water that supports bacteria growth. Black water presents serious health hazards and needs to be handled by professional water damage contractors.

If you suspect your home or business has been damaged by one or more of the types of water above, take the following steps:

Stop the Source of Water
  • Be Safe: Turn off all electricity running through your property. Don't go near or touch any water you believe to be contaminated.
  • Stop the Source of Water: If you're able, put a stop to the water at its source. That way, you can prevent more damage.
  • Call Disaster Response: Contact our water damage company ASAP for water restoration services. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

Our Process for Water Damage Restoration in Ellwood City, PA

Having a water damage restoration company by your side who knows how to remediate moisture is a key factor in getting your life back on track. At Disaster Response, we have refined our process over 40+ years of water damage clean-up experience. That way, we can provide customers with reliable, comprehensive service when they need it the most.

We utilize powerful pumps and vacuums to eliminate standing water from your property. Swift water removal is essential in minimizing damage and lowering the likelihood of mold growth. Our team is dedicated to ensuring efficient water extraction to prevent any additional complications.

After extracting water from your property, we dry and dehumidify the impacted areas. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to do so to eliminate moisture from walls, floors, and furniture. Proper drying helps prevent warping, swelling, and the growth of mold.

Whenever we deal with water damage, we have to address the potential contaminants and bacteria that can enter your home. We make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas to create a safe living environment. This involves cleaning carpets, upholstery, and personal belongings. Our technicians also use antimicrobial treatments to prevent mold and bacterial growth.

The final step in the process is the restoration of your home to its pre-damage condition. This comprehensive restoration process may encompass a range of tasks, from minor repairs such as replacing drywall and installing new carpeting to major reconstruction efforts. Rest assured that Disaster Response is fully equipped to manage all aspects of water damage restoration, from start to finish.

  • Maintenance: Have your business or home's roof, appliances, and plumbing inspected by professionals to spot early signs of wear and tear.
  • Water Alarms: If there is a flood or leak in your home, a water alarm can alert you so that you can take action immediately.
  • Drainage: Your home needs proper drainage systems in place at all times. To prevent water buildup, be sure to unclog your downspouts and gutters.
  • Cracks and Gaps: Be sure to seal up any cracks and gaps in your property's foundation to limit water from getting inside.

120 Sixth-grade students participated in a pizza project that culminated last week as they ventured to local pizzerias Vinny’s Restaurant and Johnny’s Pizza Shop.

Elementary Computer Teacher Matt Skoczylas and School Counselor Christina Mendillo organized the project.

Skoczylas had completed a pizza project unit with Ellwood City 6th graders before but, according to Mendillo, wanted to expand the project and turn it into an actual simulation.

Students toured the restaurant, made pizzas, and got to learn from the local business owners.

Pizza Joes Corporate and Ellwood City’s Pizza Joes also came to the school for an assembly. Mike Nocera, an ECASD employee and known pizza maker among peers, also taught the students how to make dough from scratch.

Some were then able to come back and participate as customers/judges.

In alignment with Career Readiness standards, Ellwood City 6th graders students have completed “Hartman Shark Tank” for sometime, but Mendillo said the school was ready for a change that provided our students with more soft skills to prepare for their future careers.

“We thought this was the year to blend these two ideas and with the help of the district’s food service director, Jennifer Bell, it became a year long project/reality for 6th graders before.”

Throughout the year in computer class, each student individually worked on components of operating their own pizza shop – creating a name, logo, slogan, website, menu, budget. In Library Skills they wrote a commercial script and in music they wrote jingles for their pizza shop. Eventually the 5th grade students and teachers voted on one favorite name/logo for each of our homerooms.

In January, in the district’s Wolverine Workshop STEAM class, students started working as a unit for their pizza shop and created resumes, had job interviews for the position in the restaurant they wanted, made decorations and placemats, and then practiced soft skills such as shaking hands, answering phones, introducing themselves, and then practiced simulations of running a pizza shop.

Homeroom teachers acted as “owners” and conducted the job interviews and provided guidance with the simulations and allowed much time for practicing and perfecting the experience.

“This project asked a lot of our students and took them out of their comfort zones with general interactions with peers and adults,” says Mendillo. “They didn’t think they would be able to do it, but they did. I think they surprised themselves with what they were able to pull off and being able to come together as a team.”

Each homeroom teacher was asked to pick a manager to oversee the operation of the restaurant and those students had additional pressure, but exceeded expectations according to Mendillo.

“We’re so proud of all the students for stepping up and showing up for this challenging project.”

“Community participation was huge with this project,” concluded Mendillo. “Something similar will definitely be in the works.”

Significant progress has been made along the Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike) as the Beaver River Bridge Replacement Project is more than halfway completed.

The $269 million project, which began in December 2022, constructs two new bridges to the north of the current bridge and expands the roadway from two to three lanes in each direction, adding widened shoulders and median.

Pier tables are currently under construction on the eastbound bridge and have been completed on the westbound side. Each bridge is a five-span, cast-in-place, segmental bridge that is 1,645 feet long and 200 feet high. The westbound bridge structure is anticipated to open in mid-2026 with the entire project finished in 2027.

The Total Reconstruction Project is a system-wide initiative that creates safer corridors, better supports incidence response, and provides a smoother and more efficient experience for travelers. More than 160 miles of highway have been rebuilt across the PA Turnpike system with another 100+ miles currently either under construction or in the design phase.

The Beaver Valley interchange is being built to support the PA Turnpike’s new Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. In an ORT system, tolls are charged electronically as customers drive at highway speeds without slowing down or stopping beneath overhead structures — called gantries — located between interchanges. Equipment on the gantry and on the roadway processes E-ZPass or Toll By Plate transactions. ORT reduces confusion and lane switching associated with traditional, stop-and-go tolling. Tollbooth removal eliminates obstacles, increases sight lines and reduces stress and distractions for customers entering and exiting the system. The switch to ORT east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension occurred in January. ORT will launch on the PA Turnpike’s mainline western section in 2027.

This roadwork is critical to delivering on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike)’s mission of operating a safe, reliable, customer-valued toll road system that supports national mobility and commerce. Since 2023, the PA Turnpike has supported more than $1 billion in construction bids to modernize, maintain or improve customer experience. Key projects include resurfacing nearly 75 miles roadway, a record-high 27 miles of total reconstruction, and replacing key bridges at Beaver River and Hawk Falls. Resources and information on planned construction projects can be found at Traveling on the PA Turnpike | PA Turnpike.
