Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

Erie County health officials believe measles outbreak 'contained'; host vaccine clinic

Erie County health officials said they believe a recent measles outbreak that has infected eight people might be contained.

They are the first reported measles cases among county residents since 1991 and are part of a nationwide outbreak that has infected more than 800 people in 24 states so far in 2025.

None of the eight county residents infected has required hospitalization.

"The most recent cases were people already quarantining, so they were not out in the community," said Erin Mrenak, County Health Department director. "We believe the outbreak is contained at this point. The incubation period for the last people publicly exposed (April 5 at UPMC Hamot's emergency department) expires April 26."

Mrenak spoke about the outbreak during a measles, mumps and rubella vaccination clinic April 22 at the Zem Zem Shrine Club, 2525 W. 38th St. It was the first one to be held since the outbreak was officially declared in the county earlier this month.

About 60 adults registered for the clinic, which was open to any adult at least 18 years old. Both unvaccinated people and those who previously had a single dose of MMR vaccine were invited to participate.

There was no cost for the vaccination.

MMR vaccine less expensive than immunity testing

Donna Pasky, 64, was among the first people to receive the MMR vaccine at the clinic.

"I'm of that questionable age of those born between 1957 and 1960 where they aren't sure if I have immunity from measles," said Pasky, who lives in Springfield Township. "I talked with my primary-care physician four weeks ago, and she said I could get tested but it costs a lot of money. So, I decided to come get the vaccine."

One dose of MMR vaccine provides about 93% protection against the measles virus, while two doses provides about 97% protection, according to the County Health Department.

More MMR vaccination clinics planned for Erie County

People, including those younger than 18, can receive an MMR vaccine by their health-care provider or at the County Health Department. Additional clinics are also being planned, Mrenak said.

"We are in the process of coming up with some locations and potentially get out to some different parts of the county with our mobile unit," Mrenak said. "We will post on our social media and on our website when that will happen."

Elite Pro Dog Training, located in Sanford, Fl has announced the launch of its new Thermal Imaging and Multi Radiance Laser Therapy service, set to go live in March. This development is positioned to be a noteworthy advancement in canine care.

While most dog training facilities typically offer basic obedience, Elite Pro Dog Training is investing in advanced technology, including Thermal Imaging and Laser Therapy, to provide a more comprehensive level of care.

“Things are going to change when our Thermal Imaging and Multi Radiance Laser Therapy service launches,” states Laurent Gabriel, Owner at Elite Pro Dog Training.

This launch signals a shift towards a Holistic Approach to Canine Care. Where competitors offer standard services, Elite Pro Dog Training will emphasize not only behavior modification but also the overall well-being of the dog. This is demonstrated through the integration of wellness services with traditional training programs.

Cutting-Edge Wellness Therapies Integrated

Elite Pro Dog Training is moving beyond basic obedience training by offering cutting-edge wellness therapies:

Proactive Care and Veterinary Collaboration Emphasized

Elite Pro Dog Training is emphasizing proactive care by utilizing Thermal Imaging to detect potential issues early. This allows for addressing problems before they escalate, potentially leading to better outcomes for dogs.

The company also understands the importance of working with veterinarians. Elite Pro Dog Training will offer to send thermal images directly to veterinarians, enhancing collaboration and providing information to aid in diagnosis and treatment.

Laser Therapy Access Expanded

Recognizing the benefits of ongoing laser therapy, Elite Pro Dog Training will provide a laser rental option. This allows owners to continue treatment at home, potentially providing an alternative to traditional rehabilitation methods.

This initiative is rooted in a fundamental commitment to the overall well-being of the dogs served. The company believes that caring for a dog goes beyond just addressing behavioral issues and involves integrating services that contribute to a dog’s physical health and comfort, alongside their behavioral health.

Addressing Limitations and Embracing Innovation

Elite Pro Dog Training acknowledges the limitations of traditional approaches. The company recognizes that traditional dog training methods, while effective for behavior modification, may not fully address underlying physical issues that can affect a dog’s behavior and quality of life. By incorporating Thermal Imaging, potential sources of discomfort that might be missed by conventional observation or training techniques can be identified.

Elite Pro Dog Training aims to provide a more comprehensive level of care for dogs. By offering services like Laser Therapy, pain, inflammation, and healing can be addressed, complementing training programs and supporting dogs more completely. The integration of Thermal Imaging and Laser Therapy demonstrates a willingness to embrace innovation and technology to enhance canine care, offering services that may not be available at other training facilities.

Empowering Owners and Enhancing Communication

Elite Pro Dog Training aims to empower dog owners with more information about their dogs’ health. By providing Thermal Imaging and offering to share the results with veterinarians, communication and collaboration between trainers, owners, and veterinary professionals are facilitated, leading to more informed and effective care.

Benefits for Dog Owners

This development is positioned to be a significant benefit to customers. Thermal imaging provides owners with a deeper understanding of their dog’s physical well-being, revealing potential discomfort or underlying issues that might not be apparent through regular observation. This knowledge empowers owners to take proactive steps to address their dog’s needs. Thermal imaging can also assist in the early detection of potential problems, allowing owners to seek timely veterinary care, potentially preventing more serious health issues and improving their dog’s long-term health outcomes.

Elite Pro Dog Training facilitates collaboration between owners and veterinarians. By providing thermal images to veterinarians, valuable visual data that can aid in diagnosis and treatment planning is offered, potentially leading to more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment strategies.

Multi Radiance Laser Therapy offers a drug-free approach to pain relief and promotes accelerated healing. This is particularly beneficial for dogs recovering from injuries, surgeries, or those with chronic conditions, improving their comfort, mobility, and overall quality of life.

The laser rental option provides a way for owners to support their dog’s recovery. By continuing laser therapy at home, dogs can experience healing.

Elite Pro Dog Training addresses both behavioral and physical well-being, providing a more complete and integrated approach to supporting the dog’s overall health. Ultimately, these enhanced services provide dog owners with greater peace of mind, knowing that their dog is receiving comprehensive care that addresses both their behavioral and physical needs.

Elite Pro Dog Training: A History of Service

Established in Jan 2010, Elite Professional Dog Training has been in business for over 15 years. With a reported 99% success rate, EPDT offers training that caters to dogs of all personalities, sizes, and breeds, focusing on specific needs with custom packages. The company’s goal is to continue to be Florida’s premiere dog training facility and a favorite among customers.

Expanding Services and Improving on Traditional Approaches

Previously, the closest alternative to Elite Professional Dog Training’s Thermal Imaging and Multi Radiance Laser Therapy service involved using separate providers: a dog trainer for behavior issues and a veterinary clinic or rehab center for thermal imaging and laser therapy.

Elite Pro Dog Training is changing this by combining behavior modification with wellness therapies (thermal imaging and laser therapy) under one roof. This integrated approach allows for a more holistic understanding of the dog. For example, if a dog is showing behavioral issues due to chronic pain, Elite Pro Dog Training can address both the behavior and the pain, whereas separate providers might treat these as distinct problems.

Having combined services streamlines communication. The trainers and therapists at Elite Pro Dog Training can collaborate directly, leading to a more coordinated treatment plan. In contrast, with separate providers, the owner often acts as the intermediary, which can sometimes lead to miscommunication or delays.

Elite Pro Dog Training offers a single solution for both training and wellness needs. This is more convenient for owners compared to scheduling appointments and traveling to different locations for different services.

The use of thermal imaging allows Elite Pro Dog Training to take a proactive approach to care. Potential issues can be detected early, before they manifest as major problems, which can be more effective than simply reacting to existing symptoms.

Elite Pro Dog Training emphasizes personalized treatment protocols. This means that the training and therapies are tailored to the individual dog’s needs.

Combining services could offer potential cost-effectiveness in some cases. For example, early detection of issues through thermal imaging might prevent more costly treatments later on.

This integration of services is predicted to make Elite Professional Dog Training’s Thermal Imaging and Multi Radiance Laser Therapy service more popular with customers.

The Thermal Imaging and Multi Radiance Laser Therapy service is set to launch in March to serve the greater Orlando and central Florida areas. More details can be found at

By Nayeli Jaramillo-Plata, CNN

(CNN) — Before you hop out the door this Easter Sunday, ?it may be worth checking what’s open as some places aren’t cracking their doors.

Easter falls on April 20 this year. While it’s not a federal holiday, it’s widely observed across the United States, and many businesses either close or shorten their hours.

A?ccording to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to shell out $23.6 billion on Easter celebrations. So whether you’re hunting for last-minute groceries, grabbing a bite to eat or planning to just enjoy the day, here’s what’s open (and closed) this Easter Sunday.

Retail and grocery stores

Walmart, Kroger’s, Food Lion, Wegmans and Trader Joe’s (except for one store in Portland, Maine) will all be open during regular hours. Still, it’s best to double-check with your local store, as hours could vary.

Several major retailers will be closed for the holiday, including Target, Aldi, Lowe’s and Best Buy. Warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club will also shut their doors for the day.

Shoppers hoping to browse clothing or home goods will also have to wait — TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Burlington and JCPenney will all be closed on Easter.

Restaurants

Most major fast-food chains like McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Wendy’s will be open on Easter Sunday, but hours can vary depending on the location.

Sit-down favorites like Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden and Golden Corral will be open during their regular hours. Chains like Applebee’s, IHOP and Panera Bread may have adjusted schedules, so it’s a good idea to call ahead or check online.

Some popular spots, including Zaxby’s, Chipotle, CAVA, Raising Cane’s and In-N-Out, will be closed for the holiday.

Financial services

Most banks will be closed on Easter Sunday, although that’s not out of the ordinary since many do not operate on Sundays. Online and mobile banking services will still be available.

Markets are always closed on the weekends. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will trade on Monday as usual.

Postal services

US Postal Service offices will be closed, and there will be no regular mail delivery, in keeping with standard Sunday operations, but Express Critical will be available.

Most FedEx services also won’t be available, though FedEx offices will be open on modified hours and Custom Critical will be available.

Gas prices jumped as much as 20 cents per gallon at some filling stations around Erie during the final full week of March before settling at an average 13.6-cent increase.

The average cost per gallon as of Sunday was $3.45, according to GasBuddy's survey of 100 Erie stations. That is 7 cents per gallon lower than February and 32.4 cents lower year-over-year.

GasBuddy identified $3.09 as the least expensive price for a gallon of gas in Erie as of Sunday. The most expensive was $3.49 a gallon.

Explore more data reports about Erie and Pennsylvania on the GoErie.com Data Central site.

How do Erie gas prices compare to state, region, U.S.?

GasBuddy reported the average price of gas in the United States is $3.11 per gallon, a 2.7-cent increase in the past week. That's also 2.2 cents more than in February but 39.7 cents lower than one year ago.

The lowest per-gallon price in Pennsylvania Sunday was $2.69 and the highest was $3.95.

Regionally, the average per-gallon cost in Buffalo is $3, up less than a penny from a week ago; $3.02 in the Cleveland area, or 5.8 cents less than last week; and $3.02 in Akron, 8.2 cents below last week's average.

GasBuddy compiles data from more than 11 million weekly price reports of more than 150,000 gas stations.

Why could gas prices increase?

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a statement there are multiple forces behind last week's increase and more price hikes possible in the near future.

"We've seen the national average inch up for the second straight week, but with renewed refinery issues on the West Coast, gas prices there are likely to jump 10 to 35 cents per gallon over the next couple weeks," De Haan said.

"Meanwhile, motorists in the Northeast should consider filling up soon, as the final step in the transition to summer gasoline is just a couple of weeks away — and with it, a likely increase in prices."

"As we head into April, Americans should expect gas prices to rise, with a peak that could occur in mid-to-late April," he said. "While average prices remain well below last year's levels, we’ll likely begin to catch up, with prices expected to increase in most — if not all — states over the next few weeks. Continued uncertainty around whether tariffs will be implemented on April 2 could also impact pump prices, setting the stage for a volatile period for American drivers."

A tornado watch initially issued for much of western Pennsylvania Sunday until 4 p.m. has been canceled.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, issued the watch effective at 10:30 a.m. for Erie, Crawford, Mercer, Venango, Forest, Clarion and 12 other counties stretching south to the West Virginia border. The watch also included eastern Ohio counties and most of West Virginia.

The storm prediction center defines the tornado watch area as "approximately along and 60 statute miles east and west of a line from 30 miles northwest of Franklin PA to 40 miles south southeast of Charleston WV."

A tornado watch according to the weather service means weather conditions could lead to the formation of severe storms and tornadoes. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or if you suspect a tornado is approaching.

"Multiple lines and clusters of thunderstorms will continue to develop and intensify as they move quickly northeastward late this morning and into the afternoon," forecasters wrote. "Scattered damaging winds will likely be the main threat with this activity, with peak gusts perhaps reaching up to 60-70 mph. But the environment will also support some threat for a few line-embedded tornadoes as well."

Erie weather forecast details

Erie County and Crawford counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 2:30 p.m. Sunday, and Erie County remains under a high wind warning until 2 p.m. South winds of 25 to 35 mph will gust at times to 60 mph. There could be nickel-sized hail during thunderstorms. Winds could cause damage including downed trees and power lines, and the weather service said it expected widespread power outages. Travel could be difficult at times.

The temperature in Erie is expected to fall to around 45 degrees by 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the weather service in Cleveland. Chance of rain is 80%, with rainfall measuring as much as a quarter-inch, with greater amounts possible in thunderstorms.

The temperature will continue to fall Sunday night, bottoming out near 28. Rain and snow showers are possible.

Monday's high is expected to be around 37.
