"When someone came in and my dad couldn't remember his name, he'd call him Ralphie," said Paul "Buddy" Seebacher III. "People began calling him Ralphie too."
The name stuck for the business as well. Ralphie's has been a Girard institution for 60 years, and the Seebachers for even longer.
Buddy Seebacher and his wife, Colleen, are the second generation of Seebachers to own and operate the bar. They were honored on Jan. 11 for their longtime commitment to Girard. The crowd of patrons and local dignitaries at the event included Girard Mayor Peter Burton, who presented a plaque. A proclamation from state Rep. Jake Banta also honored the family.
"It was overwhelming," Buddy Seebacher said.
Ralphie's roots
Buddy Seebacher's parents, Paul and Betty Seebacher, opened a bakery at 103 Main St. West 70 years ago, in 1955, and a decade later bought the building, which also housed Girard Cafe. They took down the wall separating the two businesses to expand and operate the bar.
Buddy Seebacher, 69, began working nights at the business when he turned 18.
"I was in high school," Seebacher said. "My teachers taught me by day, and I served them while I was working here at night."
He thought about doing other work but stayed at the bar and in time took over operations from his parents.
"I stuck with my folks. I couldn't let them down," Seebacher said. "I was an only child."
The Seebachers also have one child, a daughter who lives in Washington state. They still operate the business daily.
"I come in every day to see my friends," Buddy Seebacher said.
'The best'
There's nothing fancy about Girard Cafe. The main attractions are the bar, video games, and the people.
"It's friendly here," said Austin Carner, 30, who has been a customer at Ralphie's since he was 21. Carner said that he travels a lot for work but stops by the bar when he's back in Girard.
"It's the best place to come to in Girard," Carner said. "And Buddy is the best."

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a tornado warning for Erie County.
This warning will remain in place until 6:15 p.m. Monday, June 9.
At 5:14 p.m., "...a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Girard...moving northeast at 20 mph," the NWS states.
The storm will be near Erie at 5:20 p.m., Waterford around 5:30 p.m. and northwest Harborcreek around 5:35 p.m.
Severe thunderstorm warning, watch issued
Erie County is also under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:15 p.m. Monday, June 9. The National Weather Service states 60 mph wind gusts, along with penny-sized hail, are possible. The impacted locations include Erie, Edinboro, North East, Girard, Waterford, Wattsburg, northwest Harborcreek, Lawrence Park, Wesleyville, Lake City, McKean, and Avonia.
A severe thunderstorm watch that includes Erie County will remain in effect until 10 p.m. Monday.
