Gas prices at most outlets in the Meadville area dropped by about 10 cents per gallon over the past week while the state average fell by about 6 cents per gallon.

Overall, prices in Meadville were at $3.45 per gallon while the state average was at $3.19, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 5,269 stations in Pennsylvania.

Prices in Pennsylvania are 16.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and 38.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. According to price reports, the station in Pennsylvania with the cheapest gas had it priced at $2.67 while the most expensive was $3.99.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 1.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.02 Monday. The national average is down 10.6 cents per gallon from a month ago and is 42.4 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

“As concerns over tariffs and policy uncertainties grow, gas prices have continued to decline across much of the country, raising the possibility that the national average could slip below $3 per gallon and approach some of the lowest prices seen in years,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “However, this decline shouldn’t necessarily be celebrated, as it comes with strong warning signs. When the economy slows, gasoline demand drops — along with demand for other refined products like diesel and jet fuel. We’ve already seen some signals that the months ahead could be challenging. All of this suggests that gas prices are likely to remain low for now. However, if economic conditions improve, gas prices could eventually follow suit and start rising again.”

• Pittsburgh: Average price is $3.49 per gallon.

• Warren: Average price is $3.56 per gallon.

• Waterford: Prices as low as $3.11 per gallon.

A familiar name in discount retailing is making a comeback in both Erie and Meadville.

Signs outside of Big Lots stores at 2215 W. 12th St. in Erie and at 820 Water Street in the Downtown Mall in Meadville, announce: "The Comeback Starts Soon."

Big Lots, which filed for bankruptcy protection in September, closed most of 800-plus stores in recent months.

Variety Wholesalers, which purchased 219 of those Big Lots locations out of bankruptcy, recently announced plans to begin reopening those locations.

Nine stores in six states, including stores in Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, were expected to reopen by Thursday.

What's the timetable for local stores?

Other stores are expected to quickly follow.

Variety Wholesalers, which also operates Roses, Roses Express and Maxway stores, expects to open a second wave of about 55 stores on May 1. Plans call for the remaining stores to open by early June.

In a response to a question from the Erie Times-News, a company spokesman said both Erie and Meadville locations are scheduled to reopen on May 15.

"We’re excited to bring exceptional bargains and famous brand to these communities," the company said in a statement.

What to expect from those locations

According to the company, former Big Lots locations will be remodeled and will feature a wider selection of merchandise, including clothing, home decor, health and beauty and closeout items

'We're thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” Lisa Seigies, CEO of Variety Wholesalers, said in a statement.

She continued: "We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall. Every time a customer visits Big Lots! we want them to find something new and exciting!”

A Pennsylvania boys basketball playoff game was ended before the clock expired on Friday, and now the winning team’s advancement is in question.

Meadville was leading its Class 5A first-round playoff game against Uniontown by eight points with 3 minutes, 12 seconds left on the clock when a technical foul was called on a Uniontown player. According to goerie.com’s Tom Reisenweber, a fight broke out in the stands as several Uniontown fans appeared to enter the Meadville section.

Reisenweber got good video of the melee below.

The fight spilled out onto the court, with several players being held back by teammates. Several fans were taken off in handcuffs.

It was thought that the Pennsylvania High School Athletic Association would award the win to Meadville because of its eight point lead. But as of Saturday, it had not advanced them in its official bracket.

"I have contacted the schools involved and have requested a report from them by Monday AM regarding last night’s incident," PIAA executive director Robert Lombardi wrote in an email to Reisenweber. "I have no further comment until I receive their reports."

Meadville coach Mark McElhinny told Reisenweber that his team is staying positive.

"The kids are doing fine," said McElhinny. "I think they are optimistic but it sounds like we'll have to wait until Monday to find out if we move on."

Meadville (16-8) led by eight points at the time and appeared to be the winner of the game, but the PIAA did not advance the Bulldogs on the official bracket on Friday night.

Neither Meadville nor Uniontown has been declared as the winner of Friday’s high school basketball playoff game in the state of Pennsylvania. An ugly brawl amongst fans forced the highly-competitive matchup to come to an abrupt end during the fourth quarter.

As of this writing, the result is currently under review.

Meadville and Uniontown are separated by approximately 150 miles. The latter traveled north to the former on Friday for a first round high school basketball playoff game in the PIAA Class 5A division. However, they played only 28 minutes and 48 seconds. Officials called for an indefinite stoppage with three minutes and 12 seconds still on the clock because a full-blown melee broke out in the stands.

Uniontown trailed Meadville 49-31 early in the third quarter but the Red Raiders battled back from 18 down to pull within three of the Bulldogs with just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter. It was setting up to be an incredible finish down the stretch.

Unfortunately, poor fan behavior ruined what was shaping up to be an instant classic.

The multi-layered incident began with a questionable foul call. Uniontown guard Kelan Milsom was slapped with a technical on what appeared to be an innocent layup because officials ruled that he dunked the ball. He received his fifth foul and was relegated to the bench.

A small confrontation between players broke out near Meadville’s bench that was very quickly diffused as the Bulldogs went to the foul line but the same cannot be said for what happened next. Punches started flying in the stands. Players got involved with the violence. Fans stormed onto the court. Chaos ensued.

Officials were unable to get the gym back under control. Law enforcement removed multiple fans from the premises in handcuffs. The game did not continue.

Meadville was initially declared as the winner because of its eight-point lead at the stoppage. That result has since been reversed, for now. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association decided to hold out for further review. There is a chance that both teams could be called back to the court — without fans — to finish out the final three minutes of the fourth quarter. It could be ruled as a no contest.

Regardless of what the PIAA decides about Friday’s game, I would imagine that suspensions will be announced in coming days. All of the players who got involved with the brawl probably won’t be allowed to compete in the second round. Stay tuned.

After a weekend of deliberation, the PIAA has determined that both Meadville and Unionville will be forced to forfeit their 5A boys basketball first-round state playoff opener following a brawl in the crowd that ended Friday’s game in Meadville.

“Due to the blatant violations of the PIAA bylaws, the Meadville vs. Uniontown basketball game will be recorded as a forfeiture for each team,” the PIAA announced on X, formerly Twitter.

The announcement comes in the wake of the incident, which occurred with just over 3 minutes remaining in a contest that Meadville was winning 63-55.

Multiple adults were taken away in handcuffs and the game was not finished.

With the forfeiture, Hershey will officially advance to the 5A state quarterfinals, as the Trojans awaited the winner following a victory over Penn-Trafford.

The PIAA also announced that both Meadville and Uniontown are removed from next season’s state tournament unless provisions are adhered to.

Both schools are required to submit a plan of action to the PIAA detailing what “processes are in place to prevent situations like this from occurring in the future” by March 19.

Players and coaches on next year’s teams will have to complete NFHS sportsmanship modules, and identified spectators in the incident whose identities are known are to be banned from all school-sponsored activities until June 15, 2026.

The PIAA also reprimanded the schools for not addressing the unsportsmanlike behavior of their spectators.
