Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

Big Lots is planning a comeback after filing for bankruptcy and closing over 600 locations.
In September, Big Lots announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and would close over 300 stores in addition to the originally planned 35 to 40 store closures. In February, over 600 location leases were listed for sale.
Now, Big Lots is beginning to bring its stores back to life. In January, Big Lots announced its sale to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, and as part of the deal, Variety Wholesalers acquired 219 Big Lots stores and two distribution centers.
Here are the Big Lots locations coming back to life in Tennessee.
Which Big Lots stores are reopening in Tennessee?
Variety Wholesalers, which acquired locations from Gordon Brothers, announced these three Big Lots locations in Tennessee would reopen later this week:
Another 55 Big Lots stores are set to reopen in May in several states, and more openings will occur in June.
How many Big Lots are in Tennessee?
Most recently, the Big Lots website listed 39 locations in Tennessee. The website now only shows the nine announced store reopenings.
Before the closures started, Tennessee had almost 50 storefronts. Locations include Chattanooga, Clarksville, Memphis, Knoxville and more.
Why is Big Lots selling stores?
Like many other retailers, Big Lots is being affected by high inflation and interest rates. Additionally, a news release from the company said economic trends, such as customer spending on home and seasonal products, have affected the company's revenue.
When it filed for bankruptcy, Big Lots was the fourth-largest home goods retailer in the country. At the beginning of 2024, it had 1,392 stores and more than 27,000 employees. The store also earned $4.7 billion in 2023 revenue.
The company had previously reported that sales in the first quarter of 2024 fell more than 10% compared to the previous year, though Big Lots reported improved performance in the second quarter.
"While the company's underlying performance has been improving, the Board of Directors conducted a broad strategic review of alternatives and determined that entering into the Sale Agreement with Nexus, and initiating a court-supervised sale process, is the best path forward to maximize value and ensure continued operations," wrote Big Lots in the release.

SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The doors of Union High School in Gallatin are back open more than 50 years later.
In 1922, it was the first and only secondary school for African American youth in Sumner County. Segregation laws at the time required Black and white students to be separated — forcing some students to travel miles for an education, by bus or on foot.
“All the students that lived in Hendersonville, Portland, White House…the Black students came here,” said Joseph Malone, Union High School alum. “This was the only high school in the county.”
He was a member of the school’s final senior class that graduated in 1970. That year, the school closed due to the court-ordered desegregation of the county’s school system. His father served as the school’s principal.
“It’s so important that we hold onto this heritage,” Malone said.
Malone now serves as the newly elected chairman of the Union High School Museum’s nine-member council, which worked to open a display of artifacts in the former Union High School building in 2023.
“Why not be involved in something that is going to hold your heritage and your community together, and let people know what was, and what we can learn from what was,” Malone said.
The museum is comprised of class photos, posters, trophies, athletic gear, articles of clothing and more. Malone said people of all ages come to visit, and some have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that schools in Sumner County were segregated until 1970.
“People come here from out of state — Cleveland, New York… and they are taken aback by, ‘wait, it was all Black?‘” Malone said. “You have to share with them what it was like, and some of them can’t believe it.”

Despite the setbacks and second-hand books, Malone and his former classmates look back on their time at the school fondly. They shared stories of a close-knit community drawn together by athletics, supported by local churches and led by inspiring educators.
“That’s what the teachers here told us — even though you have to go through some of those struggles, you can still make it,” Malone said.
The original school was located on Winchester Street and completed in 1922, with the first class graduating in 1924. The high school grades then moved to a new school location at 600 Small Street in 1951.
Although the archive paints a clear picture of what life was like at Union High School, Malone said the museum has outgrown the room it is currently housed in. He said the council is now exploring options to expand.

“We are living history, and we have to continue to live the history as long as God gives us strength to do what we do,” Malone said.
The museum is available for tours by appointment from March through October on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Wawa, the beloved Delco-based gas station and convenience store chain, is opening a new location in Gallatin, Tennessee, writes Katie Nixon for the Nashville Tennessean, as reported in Yahoo! News.
The new store at 1195 Long Hollow Pike has been highly anticipated by residents with the National Tennessean referring to Wawa as a “National Company” in its headline. It compared the incoming Wawa with a Target that’s also looking to open there and with Buc-ee’s, another popular convenience store chain in the South.
Featuring ten fuel stations, this new store will be 6,374 square feet.

“I’ve heard a lot about people wanting Wawa here,” stated Paige Brown, mayor of Gallatin. Megan Salvador, a Wawa representative, noted how happy she is that locals are excited about the new location.
Kimley-Horn, a design, engineering, and planning consultant firm, is working with Wawa to design the new location.
The development plan was approved by city officials on March 24, with construction scheduled to begin in August. Construction is expected to take nine months, and the store is set to open in May 2026.

Wawa’s signature coffee and fresh hoagies have helped create a strong fan following, similar to Buc-ee’s. Both chains are similarly open 24/7 year-round.
In 2022, Wawa announced that this is one of 40 store locations they plan to open in the Nashville area.

Madison, TN (April 18, 2025) – Emergency responders were quick to the scene, providing care to the injured victims following an early morning collision in Madison. The crash occurred at approximately 6:23 a.m. at the intersection of Old Hickory Blvd W and Gallatin Pike N, also recognized as the convergence of TN-6, US-31E, and TN-45.
Local fire and EMS crews arrived promptly to evaluate and treat those injured in the crash. While details about the number of vehicles involved remain limited, officials confirmed that the incident led to injuries that required immediate attention. The extent and nature of those injuries have not yet been made public.
The intersection, which services a major corridor for both commuter and commercial traffic, saw considerable disruption due to lane closures and the ongoing investigation. Motorists were urged to consider alternative routes to avoid the scene while responders managed the crash site and worked to restore normal traffic flow.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Multi-Route Intersections and Crash Frequency in Madison
Old Hickory Blvd and Gallatin Pike N represent one of the most heavily trafficked intersections in the Madison area, combining several key highways that serve as daily lifelines for Nashville metro traffic. With state and U.S. routes merging at this location, the complexity of travel patterns often contributes to congestion and increased risk of accidents.
Such intersections pose unique dangers due to fast-changing traffic signals, multiple turning lanes, and heavy cross-directional flows. Crashes in these areas are frequently linked to failure to yield, red-light running, and driver distraction, particularly during early morning or rush hour commutes.
According to the Tennessee Department of Safety, intersections involving multiple highway systems have among the highest rates of collisions per traffic volume. The physical layout and volume of these intersections leave little margin for error, making collisions more likely when drivers are fatigued or inattentive.
Anyone involved in a traffic accident at a major junction should immediately seek medical attention, ensure proper documentation of the scene, and consider seeking guidance to help navigate the recovery and legal processes. Professional assistance can be invaluable in protecting one’s rights and securing fair compensation.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Gallatin Pike Traffic Risks and Safety in East Nashville
Gallatin Pike, officially known as US-31E, is a major arterial road in East Nashville. It sees a steady flow of traffic from commuters, public vehicles, and pedestrians. The corridor has been identified as one of the more accident-prone areas in the city, particularly during the late morning and afternoon hours.
According to Tennessee Department of Safety data, intersections and mid-block areas along Gallatin Pike have recorded a high number of injury accidents in recent years. In 2023, Davidson County reported over 1,500 crashes on arterial roads like Gallatin Pike, with distracted driving, speed, and failure to yield cited as leading causes.
For local drivers and residents, the risks on Gallatin Pike highlight the importance of driving attentively and defensively. Staying alert, respecting speed limits, and yielding properly at driveways and intersections can significantly reduce accident risk.
When injuries are sustained in a crash, victims may face a range of challenges, from medical costs and recovery to handling insurance claims. It is essential to take swift action to document the incident and seek support to protect your rights and options for recovery.
