Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

UPDATED: Murfreesboro, TN - A major development is being planned by Kingdom Development Group, Inc. for the historic downtown Murfreesboro business district. The property, owned by Richard Sandoval, will feature a fifteen story building near the corner of East Main Street and South Spring Street. For years, the location has been commonly referred to as the Bank of America building, which is located behind Shacklett’s Photography. Part of the new development will also be constructed on the vacant grassy lot adjacent to Shacklett’s.

Kingdom Development’s Managing Partner, Brandon Neish, noted that if completed as planned, the high-rise structure will be Murfreesboro’s second, positioned just one block from the city’s tallest building—the 16-story NHC Tower. The new building will have a four-story podium that consists of storefront retail and commercial space, and a multi-purpose conference center. The next seven levels are planned for a boutique hotel, and on top of the hotel sits three levels of private penthouse suites. The building is crowned with a rooftop restaurant and bar, along with a swimming pool. This newly proposed project is expected to feature approximately 45,000 square feet of office space and a spacious event venue for graduations and special events. Parking capacity will include up to 460 spots, with 75 designated for city use. The total square footage of the structure as a whole is 300-thousand-square-feet.

“This development will also include three floors of penthouse living spaces, offering panoramic views of Murfreesboro and its surrounding landscape,” Neish stated. He emphasized that the project aims to serve as a catalyst for revitalization in downtown

Murfreesboro, strengthening the connection between Middle Tennessee State University, the broader city and community.

Kingdom Development Group, headquartered in Murfreesboro, specializes in integrating resources, technology, and professional expertise to create environments that enhance the quality of life. The company’s mission is to foster character and community through strategic planning, conceptual design, and development.

With Kingdom's mix of commercial, residential, and public-use features, the proposed development stands to reshape downtown Murfreesboro’s urban landscape and economic future.

Nashville, TN (June 14, 2025) – A crash caused injuries Friday afternoon in South Nashville along the 400 block of Murfreesboro Pike. The accident occurred around 12:57 p.m., drawing a swift response from Nashville emergency crews to assist those hurt in the incident.

Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. The number of individuals injured has not been confirmed, but those involved were treated on-site and some may have been transported for additional care.

The crash resulted in temporary disruptions along Murfreesboro Pike, one of the city’s most heavily traveled corridors. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident and are evaluating all possible contributing factors, including driver behavior and road conditions. Updates on the investigation and those involved have not yet been released.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.

Congestion and Crash Trends Along Murfreesboro Pike

Murfreesboro Pike serves as a major east-west artery in Nashville, connecting central neighborhoods with suburban and commercial zones. The corridor’s heavy traffic volume and multiple intersections make it one of the city’s most active—and accident-prone—roadways. Crashes along this stretch are often the result of lane changes, speeding, or drivers attempting turns in high-density areas.

According to the Tennessee Department of Safety, Davidson County consistently reports a high number of injury crashes each year, with routes like Murfreesboro Pike contributing significantly to those statistics. These crashes not only affect victims physically and emotionally but also bring financial and legal burdens that can last well beyond the immediate aftermath.

For individuals involved in such collisions, taking the right steps after an accident is crucial. This includes seeking medical care, gathering evidence from the scene, and contacting professionals who can help navigate insurance claims and potential legal action.

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. — Demonstrations are scheduled throughout Middle Tennessee on Saturday, June 14, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s planned military parade in Washington, D.C., which also falls on his birthday.

Locally, protestors from the “No Kings” movement will gather in Murfreesboro from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the public sidewalk near The Avenue shopping center, between Chili’s and Mimi’s Café. Organizers say the gathering is part of a coordinated response across the region to what they view as authoritarian symbolism surrounding the national event.

According to the group’s website, their concerns include erosion of civil rights, government overreach, and the militarization of public celebrations. “They’ve defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services. The corruption has gone too far,” the No Kings group stated online. “No thrones. No crowns. No kings.”

The Trump parade, set for Saturday in Washington, is expected to feature more than 6,000 active-duty personnel, 150 military vehicles including tanks, and 50 aircraft, according to Scripps News. It will mark the first military-style parade in the capital since the Gulf War-era celebration held by President George H.W. Bush in the early 1990s.

In addition to the Murfreesboro demonstration, similar events are planned across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, including:

Events are also scheduled just north of the state line in:

WGNS will continue monitoring the story and provide updates throughout the weekend.

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The rogue zebra that’s become a Middle Tennessee celebrity over the past week was seen running in a field in Rutherford County Friday morning.

The zebra was seen around 7 a.m. on Friday, June 6 in a field near Ridgewood Drive in Christiana.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said deputies observed the missing zebra, affectionately nicknamed “Ed,” through a drone camera and are continuing to track it. People have been asked to avoid the area while authorities work to safely recover the zebra.

“We don’t want to scare the zebra,” Sheriff’s Cpl. Sean White said. “We need time to get him to calm down.”

Law enforcement said the zebra’s owner was notified and a veterinarian was asked to help rescue the animal. However, as of 6 p.m. on Friday, the sheriff’s office still hasn’t confirmed whether the zebra was captured.

News 2 spoke with multiple residents in Christiana about the zebra. Some people were excited about the sighting, but some were concerned with its welfare.

One of the homeowners who talked to News 2 was Tennessee Agriculture Extension Agent Rebekah Norman, who studies livestock. She said the area provides an excellent habitat for the zebra, with different types of grass, as well as ponds for water.

“Zebras were made to go without human interaction. They’re wild animals, so he’ll be just fine as long as he can get access — or she can get access — to food and water,” Norman explained.

The zebra has been on the run for almost a week after escaping from its new owner, who obtained the animal on Friday, May 30. Rutherford County officials first alerted the community to the rogue zebra on Saturday, May 31, after it ran through traffic on Interstate 24 near Joe B. Jackson Parkway.

The days-long search has turned the zebra into quite the online sensation, with people around Middle Tennessee sharing zebra memes. The animal has “appeared” in social media posts from law enforcement agencies, as well as businesses like Martin’s Home and Garden, Deja Moo Springfield, Front Street Pub, Ralph’s Donut Shop, Pancake Pantry, Gaylord Opryland Resort, and Nashville Shores.
