NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A proposal from Metro’s Office of Homeless Services could shift more responsibility to private property owners regarding the removal of homeless encampments.

At Wednesday’s Continuum of Care: Homelessness Planning Council meeting, Director of Metro’s OHS April Calvin said that if a property owner wants a homeless encampment moved, they should help pay for it.

“If there is a property owner or a business or someone that’s going to ask us to close an encampment or move an encampment, then they should be the responsible party for paying shared cost in that movement,” Calvin said.

The proposal follows the release of this year’s point-in-time count, which found that more than 2,000 people are experiencing homelessness. However, the unsheltered population — those not in shelters or temporary housing — dropped slightly, with 43% of people living outdoors in encampments.

One of those camps used to be in Brookmeade Park. Dede Byrd spent years advocating for its closure and finding housing for the people who called it home. Byrd told News 2 it took the whole community together to work toward a solution.

“It took a whole community to house these individuals, and something that I have learned over the last four years is that at the end of the day, it is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain their property,” Byrd said.

The OHS told News 2 that it has successfully partnered with private groups in the past to share encampment cleanup costs and wants to make that approach official.

“We actively seek out partnerships that allow us to braid funding and share responsibility, ensuring that the costs associated with transitioning individuals into housing are sustainably managed.”

“Is it the Office of Homeless Services’ responsibility to do that?” Byrd asked. “No, I don’t think that it is. I think it is the property owner, the developer, the private business, they have to participate in some way.”

Byrd added that it’s a community effort.

“It’s everyone’s responsibility; I don’t think you can lay it at the feet of just one,” Byrd said.

Paul McCartney is set to bring his Got Back 2025 Tour to Nashville's The Pinnacle on Nov. 6. The tour will feature music from the Beatles' catalog, McCartney's band Wings and his solo material.

The tour begins in September in Palm Desert, Calif., and visits 19 U.S. cities including Nashville, which McCartney hasn't played since a Bridgestone Arena stop in 2014.

McCartney, a founding member of The Beatles and musical trailblazer is an 18-time Grammy winner, recipient of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement and Trustees Awards and the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year. He is also well known for philanthropic work with organizations such as PETA, LIPA, One Voice, The Vegeterian Society and others. He is also known for his participation in benefit concerts such as 1985's Live Aid.

What is Paul McCartney's history with Nashville?

Despite canvassing the globe his entire career, McCartney has only played Nashville shows twice in his career, both at Bridgestone Arena. Once in 2010 and again in 2014. He headlined Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN, in 2013. The closest The Beatles came to a Nashville stop was in Memphis in 1966.

McCartney made an early journey to Nashville in 1974. The Tennessean reported that Paul answered questions from the crowd gathered at the Metro Airport "briefly but willingly" and even humored a group of kids who were amused by his British accent (he said the word "elevator" at their request). The music superstar told a crowd of about 50 fans and members of the press that he'd come to Nashville for his three Rs — rehearsing, relating and riding.

Paul McCartney's photos to be displayed at The Frist

Paul McCartney's photography exhibition, "Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64, Eyes of the Storm" is slated to open at The Frist Art Museum in Nashville on Nov. 7 and run through Jan. 26, 2026.

The exhibition features photographs taken by McCartney with his own camera between December 1963 and February, 1964, many of which have never been seen before. That three-month period was pivotal in the explosion of The Beatles and the images, organized by the National Portrait Gallery in London, give viewers a chance to experience the band's explosive rise to fame through McCartney's lens.

The images include The Beatles' historic performance on the Ed Sullivan show before an unprecedented television audience of 73 million people, as well as performances across England.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A Middle Tennessee-based animal rescue nonprofit said they pulled 113 dogs out of horrific conditions inside a Joelton home Wednesday.

Animal Rescue Corps said they went to the home with a warrant Wednesday morning after Cheatham County Animal Control received a tip from a concerned citizen.

Inside the home, they said they found dozens of small dogs including Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese, Havanese and poodles living in “extremely neglectful” conditions. They also found at least one dog deceased.

“Very high ammonia levels in there,” Animal Rescue Corps Shelter Director and Public Information officer Michael Cunningham told WSMV. “As soon as you walk in the door, it’s instantly burning your eyes.”

Cunningham said there were several cages with litters of puppies inside the home, but most of the dogs were running free.

“We have confirmed cases of parvo in the house,” Cunningham said. “All the dogs are underweight. The dogs are filthy. They’re completely matted and covered in feces and soaking wet with urine. We can see that their feet have urine scalding, a lot of ear infections, really bad teeth. You can tell that these dogs have suffered for a very long time in this house, but that all ended today.”

Cunningham said the conditions suggested the home may have been a breeding facility.

“This is a typical puppy mill, right?” he said. “When you walk in this house, there is no furniture. It is all cages and pens where you’ve got mamas with their litters. There was a litter born in the bathtub this morning right as we arrived.”

He said puppy mills like this often supply pet stores or sell their animals online, and those looking to buy a dog should always be wary of where they’re getting it from.

“Nobody’s coming to this house to buy a dog, right?” Cunningham said. “This person is either meeting them someplace to show them the dogs or they are selling their dogs through a pet store or through a broker. There are thousands of purebred dogs up for adoption at rescues and shelters all across America right now. But if someone insists on buying a dog, then do your homework. Because otherwise, you’re contributing to places just like this.”

Animal Rescue Corps is based in Middle Tennessee with an emergency shelter in Gallatin, but their work takes them across the country, assisting local law enforcement and animal control with large-scale animal abuse situations for free.

“Cases like this are rare in most communities,” Cunningham said. “To think that animal control would have these types of resources on hand all the time isn’t really feasible. We’re a nonprofit that will come in and assist with the evidence collection. The emergency housing of the animals. Once they’re released as evidence, we’re going to hand them over to rescue groups, who will ultimately find loving homes for them.”

Cunningham said the first priority is always to get the animals to safety, but the organization also brings forensic veterinarians who are trained to collect evidence that prosecutors can use to hold those responsible for the abuse accountable in court.

“These animals don’t get in these conditions just because we showed up early here this morning, and they didn’t have time to clean up,” he said. “We work within law enforcement because we want to create a lasting solution to these types of problems. So part of this evidence collection is as we groom these animals, we will keep every mat of fur, every nail we trim, every Q-tip that cleans their ears. Everything is bagged and tagged and dried out and preserved for that courtroom later on so that we can stop this from happening again.”

The Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday they are assisting Cheatham County Animal Control in investigating suspected animal cruelty at the Joelton home.

The dogs rescued in Joelton have a long recovery ahead of them, but once they’re healthy and ready to be adopted, Cunningham said they’ll post a list of the shelters where you can find them online.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee men's basketball team will face Illinois in Nashville, Tenn., during its 2025-26 non-conference slate, as released Wednesday afternoon by bdG Sports.

The Volunteers and Fighting Illini will square off Dec. 6 at Bridgestone Arena. The game time and TV network—it will be on an ESPN channel—will be announced later.

"Our program is really looking forward to this matchup with Illinois," Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes said. "We have a great deal of respect for Brad Underwood and the Illini, and we know playing them will help prepare us for SEC action. The opportunity to compete in Nashville, a city filled with diehard Tennessee fans, is always special and we can't wait to see Vol Nation pack Bridgestone Arena."

The two programs are also in agreement to play another neutral-site game during the 2027-28 campaign, with that affair slated for Chicago. The game date and venue are still to be determined.

The 2025-26 contest will extend the streak to three consecutive seasons with a matchup between Tennessee and Illinois.

The Volunteers swept a home-and-home series over the last two years. Tennessee first claimed an 86-79 home victory on Dec. 9, 2023, and then knocked off the Fighting Illini, 66-64, on a Jordan Gainey buzzer-beater on Dec. 14, 2024, in Champaign, Ill.

Overall, Tennessee sports a 4-1 record versus Illinois. It is 3-0 at home and 1-1 on the road; the 2025-26 meeting will be the first between the two programs on a neutral floor.

The Volunteers are 36-44 all-time against the current Big Ten membership. In addition to beating Illinois last season, they also defeated UCLA, 67-58, March 22 in Lexington, Ky., in the NCAA Tournament Round of 32. Additionally, Barnes owns a 42-40 ledger versus the Big Ten's 18 current institutions.

Tennessee is 21-14 at Bridgestone Arena, including 13-12 in the SEC Tournament and 8-2 in all other neutral-site contests. Of the latter 10 outings, eight came between 2000-01 and 2009-10.

The Volunteers' game against Illinois is part of a two-day event, as Kentucky will play Gonzaga at Bridgestone Arena the prior night.
