Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

The Town of Pegram is all a buzz with planning for the 49th Annual Pegram July 4th Celebration.
Thanks to the Town of Pegram, a host of event organizers and community volunteers, attendees can plan on enjoying so much more than just fireworks as thousands plan to unite to celebrate our nation’s birthday.
This year’s theme is Stars, Stripes & Pegram Southern Nights – but the fun actually starts at 7 a.m. on July 4 and run all day until the Pegram southern night sky will be lit up with a huge, grand finale fireworks display.
Organizers are excited to showcase Pegram’s patriotism by offering traditional family fun including the pancake breakfast, parade, beauty pageants, live music, inflatables, rides, corn hole tournament, face painting, festive food and vendor booths to browse.
Event organizers also recently announced retiring director of schools Dr. Cathy Beck and her husband, Skip Beck, will serve as this year’s grand marshals for the event. The Becks have been actively involved and dedicated to education, civic service and the Pegram community as a whole since relocating to the area in 2017.
Another highlight will be Muscle Shoals Musicians, the first band to take the main stage at Pegram Park at 4 p.m. They will be followed by the Livin’ the Dream Band at 6:30 p.m., leading up to the grand finale fireworks display.
Along with all the traditional festive food, fellowship and fun family activities, organizers are excited to announce the return of a crowd favorite — the Ms. Pegram Ageless Elegance Pageant where all women aged 55 and up are invited to participate in this spirited celebration of beauty and grace. Of course, there will be pageants for all ages to enter, too!
There is also an exclusive event t-shirt being made available by Hannah Merritt Buttery, owner of Dear Delaney Boutique. She has crafted special edition men’s and women’s t-shirts for the 49th Annual Pegram July 4th Celebration which feature the festive theme “Stars, Stripes, and Pegram Southern Nights.”
If you want to actively participate by volunteering or competing in a pageant or perhaps the alumni baseball games and corn hole tournament, you can email Wendy Cox at pegramevents@gmail.com for more information.

Cheatham County Commissioner Eugene Evans and a Pegram teen are charged with assault after an altercation stemming from a lost dog.
Both parties have pleaded not guilty.
Last month, Tosha Cantrell of Pegram told Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office deputies that Evans assaulted her 18-year-old son, Zach Cantrell. She explained that earlier in the week, the family lost their dog and was out looking for her when they heard that the dog might have been at Evans’ Beech Hill Road residence.
But when her 25-year-old son Nick Cantrell went to Evans’ house with a friend, they noticed Evans, 68, standing out back. Upon pulling in the driveway and honking the horn to get his attention, Nick said Evans “approached their car screaming…to get off of his property,” according to the incident report.
Nick then left the property. Tosha returned with Zach Cantrell and his 8-year-old brother and approached Evans asking about the dog.
Cantrell explained to the Times that his mom knew Evans, and the two approached him nicely to ask about their dog. Then, he alleged, Evans “cussed” at his mom and threatened his little brother, so he stepped up to protect his family.
While the family asked about their dog, “Evans became irate,” and as they spoke, “Evans punched her son Zach in the face causing a large laceration to Zach’s bottom right corner of his lip,” the report states.
The punch “caught me off guard…(I was) blind-sided,” Cantrell said.
The family left the residence and called law enforcement from Finch’s Market in Pegram.
They reported to law enforcement that Evans was “extremely intoxicated,” the report states. Cantrell said to the Times that Evans appeared intoxicated and “couldn’t keep his balance.”
Deputies arrived at the Beech Hill Road home, and noticed Evans sitting in his back porch with “a small amount of dried up blood around his nose and mouth area (and) was extremely intoxicated and could barely keep his balance while talking with us,” the report states.
Evans apparently told deputies that he had been in the back porch mixing a drink and fixing dinner when one of the Cantrell boys arrived asking about the dog. Then he said the boy “started getting aggressive with him and then punched (him) in the face. Evans advised that is when he hit the Cantrell boy back,” the report states.
Cantrell noted that any hit back at Evans was done in “self-defense,” and he wouldn’t have picked a fight, he told the Times.
“I was just going and looking for my dog,” he said.
Evans could not identify which Cantrell boy was involved in the alleged altercation and stated that there was no one else present, according to the report. He also couldn’t tell which kind of vehicle the boy drove to the residence, or what he was wearing, the report states.
Evans did not immediately respond to the Times' request for comment.
A hearing is set for Nov. 14.
