What Tools Does Disaster Response Use for Water Damage Clean-Up?
We only use the best equipment! With our extensive experience in the San Antonio restoration industry, we've acquired state-of-the-art tools designed to tackle a wide range of challenges. This experience has also allowed our technicians to identify which type of equipment is best for a particular situation. Some of the most common water damage restoration tools we use include:
Infrared Cameras
Our infrared cameras give us the ability to see moisture in walls and ceilings that is not visible to the naked eye, almost like having "X-ray" vision. This capability allows us to detect and address trapped and hidden humidity, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.
Moisture Meters
We use moisture meters to measure moisture levels in cellulose material. Before and after the drying process, we will conduct moisture readings in all areas of your property. If we detect moisture in an unaffected area of your building, we'll get to work quickly to dry it.
Air Movers
This equipment is designed to work in conjunction with our dehumidifiers. While our dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and convert it to a liquid, our Air Mover helps to circulate this moisture in the air so that the dehumidifier can effectively remove it.
Ozone Generators
These advanced tools enable us to cleanse affected surfaces and the air in a more effective manner. Ozone Generators work by causing oxygen molecules to implode, making them a valuable deodorization tool.
Xtreme Xtractor
This tool is great for tackling tough moisture after water damage. It allows us to apply direct pressure to a surface, like a carpet, that has soaked up water. The pressure helps draw out the water, making it easier to remove.
Top 3 Types of Water Damage You Should Know About
Water damage can strike without warning and can wreak havoc on your property, leaving you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or an overflowing appliance, your property needs immediate water damage clean-up in San Antonio, TX, to prevent further harm. Here are the top three types of water damage you should know about:
Clean Water Damage
This type of water damage happens from a "clean" source, such as rainwater or a broken pipe in your home. It's easier to clean up than others on this list but can still cause extensive property damage when ignored.
Gray Water Damage
Gray water damage stems from appliances such as toilets without feces, washing machines, and dishwashers. Gray water sometimes contains bacteria and contaminants that can make you or your family sick.
Black Water Damage
The name alone indicates the severity of this type of water damage. It's caused by backed-up sewer lines, river flooding, and standing water that supports bacteria growth. Black water presents serious health hazards and needs to be handled by professional water damage contractors.
If you suspect your home or business has been damaged by one or more of the types of water above, take the following steps:
- Be Safe: Turn off all electricity running through your property. Don't go near or touch any water you believe to be contaminated.
- Stop the Source of Water: If you're able, put a stop to the water at its source. That way, you can prevent more damage.
- Call Disaster Response: Contact our water damage company ASAP for water restoration services. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.
Our Process for Water Damage Restoration in San Antonio, TX
Having a water damage restoration company by your side who knows how to remediate moisture is a key factor in getting your life back on track. At Disaster Response, we have refined our process over 40+ years of water damage clean-up experience. That way, we can provide customers with reliable, comprehensive service when they need it the most.
We utilize powerful pumps and vacuums to eliminate standing water from your property. Swift water removal is essential in minimizing damage and lowering the likelihood of mold growth. Our team is dedicated to ensuring efficient water extraction to prevent any additional complications.
After extracting water from your property, we dry and dehumidify the impacted areas. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to do so to eliminate moisture from walls, floors, and furniture. Proper drying helps prevent warping, swelling, and the growth of mold.
Whenever we deal with water damage, we have to address the potential contaminants and bacteria that can enter your home. We make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas to create a safe living environment. This involves cleaning carpets, upholstery, and personal belongings. Our technicians also use antimicrobial treatments to prevent mold and bacterial growth.
The final step in the process is the restoration of your home to its pre-damage condition. This comprehensive restoration process may encompass a range of tasks, from minor repairs such as replacing drywall and installing new carpeting to major reconstruction efforts. Rest assured that Disaster Response is fully equipped to manage all aspects of water damage restoration, from start to finish.
- Maintenance: Have your business or home's roof, appliances, and plumbing inspected by professionals to spot early signs of wear and tear.
- Water Alarms: If there is a flood or leak in your home, a water alarm can alert you so that you can take action immediately.
- Drainage: Your home needs proper drainage systems in place at all times. To prevent water buildup, be sure to unclog your downspouts and gutters.
- Cracks and Gaps: Be sure to seal up any cracks and gaps in your property's foundation to limit water from getting inside.

Is San Antonio a foodie city? Yes, and here’s why.

I never liked refried beans. At least not until I visited San Antonio, Texas.
The beans there were a revelation. Hearty, smoky and savory, they tasted like they were made by a legion of grandmas, pouring tender loving care into every restaurant where the staple was served.
And beans were just the beginning. Every meal I had in the Alamo City proclaimed it as one of the best food cities in America, and it has the world-class recognition to boot.
World-class dining
San Antonio is one of only two U.S. cities recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization as a Creative City of Gastronomy. The other is Tuscon, Arizona.
"Gastronomy is the celebration of our local culinary heritage and culture, but also how we sustain, share and blend it with new influences,” the City of San Antonio says on its website.
San Antonio’s roots are Mexican, Spanish and German, but its vibrant food scene reflects the many other cultures and communities that have come to call the city home.
That mix of tradition and innovation has drawn the attention of Michelin, which chose San Antonio and four other cities to be featured in the inaugural Michelin Guide Texas, debuting Nov. 11. The other cities are Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston.
Disney restaurant marks Michelin first:What to expect at Victoria & Albert's
Local flavors
The first thing I ate in San Antonio set the bar for the entire trip: breakfast tacos at Eddie’s Taco House, a family-run restaurant with colorful mural walls and a commitment to “quality food and great service… always at an affordable price,” according to its website.
These were nothing like the tacos I’d had for breakfast before. First, there were so many options, ranging from beans and rice to crispy chicharrónes and eggs to carne guisada, a stewed beef in gravy also offered in the breakfast buffet at my hotel, Hotel Gibbs. Second, the flour tortillas were thick and pillowy soft. I later discovered, like mind-blowing beans, homemade quality is standard in San Antonio. Third, the tacos were huge, affirming the adage everything is bigger in Texas. I couldn’t even finish mine. Lastly, they were tasty and cheap, ranging from $1.69 and to $5.99 each.
Over the course of three days, I ate my way through the city, trying everything from Texas barbecue at Pinkerton’s to modern Mexican cuisine at Rosario’s. I sampled every flavor of concha roll at La Panaderia and figured out why Rita’s on the River is known as “where we take our friends from out of town” -- its menu will feel familiar to fans of Mexican restaurants wherever they call home.
The one place I kept returning to was the Historic Pearl. Once a more than century-old brewery, the mixed-use complex now houses the elegant Hotel Emma, an array of shops, numerous eateries including a food hall and Bakery Lorraine, and one of the top 10 farmers markets in America, according to USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice awards. It’s also home to the Culinary Institute of America Texas.
A culinary incubator
The campus’s managing director and Culinary Institute of America alum April Goess told USA TODAY the CIA selected San Antonio for its third U.S. location largely because of its rich cultural heritage and culinary scene, with strong Latin American influences.
Since opening in 2008, the prestigious culinary school has further added to the city’s culinary reputation, and, Goess noted, played a pivotal role in the city’s designation as an UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, which is not just about cooking.
“The designation also recognizes San Antonio’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity in its culinary practices,” she said. “The city actively promotes sustainable food systems, supports local farmers, and fosters community engagement through various food-related initiatives and events.”
She said CIA’s Texas campus hosts numerous such activities throughout the year, like its annual Paella Challenge with CIA alum and local restauranteur Chef Johnny Hernandez.
“Graduates from the CIA San Antonio often stay in the city, bringing their skills and knowledge to local restaurants and food businesses, thereby enriching the culinary landscape,” she said.
Some alumni have opened restaurants with a range of price points right in the Pearl district, like six-time James Beard Award finalist Chef Steve McHugh’s restaurant Cured. James Beard-nominated Chef Nicola Blaque has Freight Fried Chicken at the Pearl and The Jerk Shack on the west side of the city. Chef Susan Rigg’s award-winning River Whey Creamery cheeses are served at numerous Pearl restaurants and available for sale at Pullman Market at the Pearl and at the Pearl's Winter Holiday Night Markets. Hernandez has La Gloria at the Pearl and numerous other restaurants around town. The CIA also has a student-run restaurant, Savor, and bakery cafe at the Pearl.
How can I spend 3 days in San Antonio?
Of course there are other things to do in San Antonio besides eat.
Free entertainment options include strolling along the River Walk, visiting each of the four missions in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, and partaking in seasonal celebrations like Fiesta.
San Antonio CityPASS grants visitors access to some of the city’s most popular sites, like theAlamo exhibit and church, Witte Museum, San Antonio Zoo, and Tower of the Americas, for one flat fee.
Families with kids may enjoy the nearly century-old Kiddie Park with pint-sized pay-as-you-go rides, sprawling Hemisfair playground, immersive art exhibits at Hopscotch, and the world’s first ultra-accessible theme park, Morgan’s Wonderland.
I enjoyed all of those over my three days in the city. But I especially enjoyed the food.

New San Antonio park in former parking lot rooted from shared tragedy

About six years ago, the roots of turning a church parking lot into a new park in San Antonio were planted. The idea stemmed after two women came together and connected from stillbirth grief. Since then, the shared tragedy conversations flourished into creating a new green space in Terrell Heights, with a dedicated butterfly garden named after Ava, who was stillborn.
Jess Lowry, executive director at Sunset Ridge Collective, lost her daughter Ava 18 years ago. Knowing the suffering, Lowry was there for an acquaintance turned friend/colleague Taylor Bates after she had a stillborn baby named Ellis in 2018. Bates, now deputy director of Sunset Ridge Collective, told MySA it was the "worst moment of her life," but said some beauty came out of something so horrible thanks to the new park called Charis Park.
The growth of Charis Park
The one-acre park, which will have its grand opening in late October, sits in front of Sunset Ridge Church of Christ at 95 Brees Blvd, San Antonio, TX 78209. Sunset Ridge Collective manages both the church and the park. Years ago, the church created the women-led nonprofit organization after consultants warned leaders of the decline in the congregation, Bates said.
Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, which is Christian-based and independently governed, had about 800 members at its peak in the 90s but has since dwindled to about 120, leaving no need for another parking lot, Bates said. With the plans to turn it into something, the collective began meeting with neighbors and consultants. They learned residents longed for a place to engage and connect, regardless of their religious status. Bates said the park is not an evangelical space, adding it was made for the neighborhood and the city to come together and connect.
"We don't want people to think that if they come into the park, we are going to try and convert them to any particular religious belief," Bates said. "We built it to just be good neighbors. But, in a beautiful side effect of the park, we've seen people also very curious and excited to participate in our church community."
After joining the collective, Bates, who previously worked in the art industry before shifting to an advocacy role in pregnancy loss, connected Lowry with Sarah Woolsey, the founder of The Impact Guild and Good Acres. Woolsey launched Good Acres to help churches and nonprofits maximize their underused property for community benefits like daycares, affordable housing, small businesses and green spaces. Together, the group, and local landscape architect Coral Studio, built Charis Park.
Sustainability, amenities at Charis Park
Bates said it was important to choose Coral Studio as the architect as the company focuses on sustainability. The studio designed the park to incorporate existing asphalt from the old parking lot into its new landforms. It also includes a bioswale that filters stormwater runoff and feeds into a rain garden.
"We are trying to be a model of sustainability for others, whether it's faith communities to reimagine how they can change a parking lot or for commercial developers to be inspired by inserting green space into a relatively small space," Bates said. "It's just one acre but we've seen such an increase of pollinators and birds since we've added the park."
At the park, guests will find open gathering spaces, an open-aired pavilion, a multi-use field and an amphitheater. The City of San Antonio also donated over 30 trees to the project to provide shade. The butterfly garden area will have plenty of plants for monarchs during migration.
In addition to the nature aspects, Sunset Ridge Collective added a coffee truck named One Another Coffee, which was formerly the truck operated by Rose Hip Market before it opened its brick-and-mortar. Scott's Pizza truck is also at the park from 5 p.m. until it sells out on Thursday to Friday. The coffee truck is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends. The funds for all projects help support the staff and upkeep of the park.
The grand opening for the park will be at 10 a.m. on October 26. While not officially open, residents are already enjoying the open space, Bates said. For future programming, the collective plans to host a neighborhood weekly Farmer's Market at the park, yoga in the park, movies in the park, live music and more.
"One of the core values we have here is trying to create a communal space on this campus where people can form relationships and ultimately support each other," Bates said of Charis Park. "Because life is hard, and we all suffer at various points in various ways."

Texas summers make us all feel like melting butter on hot concrete, and the fall doesn't offer much relief. Yet maybe that's why Texas and the San Antonio-Austin mega-metro continues to earn praise for its hotels, resorts and spas. Such brutal weather needs even more luxurious places to cool off.
Two Austin hotels took home high praise on Conde Nast Traveler's 2024 Readers' Choice Awards for the Best Destination Spas in the U.S. & Around the World. Lake Austin Spa and Resort was ranked the No. 3 destination in the world and No. 1 in the U.S., while Miraval Austin Spa & Resort was ranked No. 20 in the world and No. 8 in the country.
Lake Austin Spa and Resort offers a variety of luxurious retreats, from spa experiences to meditation rooms to hikes through the woods and excursions on Lake Austin. The 40-room resort offers stays for around $1,000 per night.
Miraval Austin offers everything from saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and quiet lounges, as well as yoga, meditation and other excursions. Stays charge around $1,000 per night.
Hotel Valencia named top hotel in San Antonio
Conde Nast followed up the report with a ranking of the 15 best hotels in Texas. In the Alamo City, Hotel Valencia along the River Walk was named the No. 1 hotel in San Antonio and the No. 7 best in the state.

So far this October, temperatures across Texas have felt more like late summer than they do early fall. Here in San Antonio, the average high temperature this month has been 94.4 degrees, which is the second-hottest start to October since weather records began in 1885.
Much of the state has also been roasting under the October sun. Austin has averaged a high temp of 94.8 degrees so far this month, and Houston is not far behind at 93 degrees. These temperatures are about 7 to 8 degrees warmer than the climate-normal for early October.
Unfortunately, the hot start to the month will continue on Sunday. Much of the state will experience near-record high temperatures again as temps soar well into the 90s. Here’s what you can expect.
Near record heat Sunday
It’ll be a mild and somewhat muggy start to the day on Sunday as San Antonio low temps fall to around 70 degrees. Mostly sunny skies will allow for a relatively quick warm up, allowing temps to reach 80 degrees by 10 a.m., touching the 90-degree mark between noon and 1 p.m.
San Antonio will top out at 94 to 95 degrees by 3 to 4 p.m. The record high temperature for Oct. 6th is 95 degrees, which was set way back in 1931. That record has a decent chance of being tied and an outside chance of being broken.
Many others across Texas will also be dealing with near-record heat. High temperatures in Houston are expected to reach 93 degrees, which will threaten the record high of 94 degrees, set back in 1928. The Dallas area will also reach the low to mid-90s.
Even though we're not in the middle of summer, it will still be important to stay hydrated throughout the day and take breaks away from the sun. While temperatures will not be in the triple-digits, highs in the mid-90s can still result in heat-related illness if not properly managed.
This week’s forecast
High pressure is expected to develop from the Southwestern U.S. eastward into Texas. As a result, San Antonio is likely to see temperatures reach the mid-90s again on Monday and Tuesday, and low temps will settle in near 70 degrees.
A weak cold front will move through the region by the middle of the week. Unfortunately, this front is only going to lower high temperatures by a few degrees, down into the low 90s by Thursday and Friday.
Thankfully, the front will also bring dry air into South Texas. That will help the atmosphere cool off more efficiently at night, resulting in cooler low temperatures in the low to mid-60s.
Watching the Gulf
Tropical Storm Milton developed in the western Gulf of Mexico Saturday afternoon, and the system will continue to strengthen as it moves through the Gulf on Sunday. Milton is the 13th named tropical cyclone of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
Milton will stay far away from Texas, likely to move due east over the next few days. According to the National Hurricane Center, Milton is likely to develop into a hurricane by Monday, then potentially make landfall across the west coast of Florida on Wednesday.
