Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

The organizations with a total workforce count of over 100 are listed on the EDP’s major employers report, while those with a workforce totaling less than 100 are included in an abbreviated mid-size employers report.
In addition to providing information on company workforce rankings, the EDP also looks at trends in the primary business sectors which have grown to include healthcare, education, business and professional services, energy, chemical, financial services, hospitality/entertainment, life science, manufacturing, public agencies, real estate development, social services, and transportation/warehousing/utilities (combined).
This year’s major employer report recorded a combined total of 84 companies and 41,103 jobs. For the sixth year in a row, healthcare is our local leading sector representing 32.6% of the overall workforce with 13,420 major employer jobs. Additionally, four of the area’s top ten employers on the list are in healthcare: Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, St. Luke’s Health, and Texas Children’s. Education represents the second largest sector with 7,791 jobs representing 19% of the overall workforce. Together the healthcare and education jobs represent 51.6% of the total workforce represented in this year’s major employers report.

Jevon Gibb, CEO of The Woodlands Area EDP, stated “The area added over 1,000 jobs at major employers over the last year. As part of this 2024 number, we had some big gains at our hospitals, and higher ed, as well as a great win with the return of CB&I to The Woodlands. We had some losses in our Business Services sector, which happens. When it all adds up, though, we had our best year since 2018, and we should celebrate that.”
“It’s important to separately track sectors such as Energy, Chemicals, Manufacturing, and Life Science for two reasons. First, they generate tax revenue, which pays for the amazing amenities and quality of life that make The Woodlands an awesome place to live, work, pray, learn and play. Second, these other sectors are the primary drivers for population growth. Our hospitals and schools are fueled by those sectors. Economic development does not recruit healthcare and education. We recruit other sectors and industries. And when we win, those other sectors naturally follow. For continued growth, we need to continue attracting and growing companies in sectors like Energy, Chemicals, Manufacturing, and Life Sciences.”
“I’m excited that the EDP is leaning in to doing more. So what does that look like for the local economy? It means that were committing to proactive business outreach and attraction. For those energy companies fleeing California, life science companies seeking lower costs and less regulation than Boston, and all the companies in between, we are all in. We are going to recruit them, bring them here, and make that decision the best and easiest they ever made.”
“As part of that, I have an exciting announcement today. We’re announcing a project today with Newmark Global, one of the leading site selectors in the world. We’re going to partner with them to refine how we target companies, who we target, and to align our team and resources to maximize success.”

Dallas, TX (RestaurantNews.com) La Madeleine, a beloved, French-founded neighborhood café and bakery, has signed an agreement with franchise group, Delicieux Ventures, LLC, to develop a new location in The Woodlands, Texas, by the end of this year.
Delicieux Ventures, LLC is owned and operated by husband-and-wife duo, Fernando and Regina Berezowsky. Their journey to becoming la Madeleine franchisees began nearly 24 years ago, when they first met and fell in love with la Madeleine Cafe concept in Kingwood, TX.
After spending the past decade as an insurance broker and working in his family’s business, Fernando Berezowsky wanted to find a new business venture that would be closer to the couple’s hearts. When the opportunity presented itself to bring la Madeleine back to The Woodlands after the area’s original location closed in January 2025, they knew it was right for them.
“When searching for our next opportunity, my wife and I wanted to find something meaningful to us, and we believe that is why la Madeleine came back into our lives,” said Berezowsky. “La Madeleine ignited our spark, and we look forward to creating new memories and experiences for our guests and serving up cherished brand classics like Croque Monsieur and Quiche Florentine when we bring the brand back to The Woodlands later this year.”
Founded in Dallas in 1983, la Madeleine has since grown to nearly 100 locations across the United States and internationally, each with its own unique charm. Each café serves approachable French cuisine made with simple, fresh ingredients and time-honored recipes. It offers an affordable, made-to-order dining experience that is unique and enjoyable for everyone.
“The Woodlands community enjoyed la Madeleine’s high-quality French fare for nearly two decades and Fernando and Regina, who found love within our four walls, are the right team to bring it back to the area,” said la Madeleine Senior Director of Franchise Development Mark Ramage. “They are highly dedicated to our concept and will represent la Madeleine well to existing and new guests who visit us in The Woodlands.”
The Berezowskys will announce the site of the new location later this year.
La Madeleine is currently seeking entrepreneurs with restaurant industry experience to expand the brand’s presence throughout North America. To learn more about franchising with la Madeleine, go to laMadeleine.com/franchise.
