BEAVER DAM, Wis. —
The once-missing pregnant teen out of Beaver Dam is back in Wisconsin. After a two-month search, Sophia Franklin is home safe, according to her family.
It comes as her accused abductor and father of her unborn baby, 40-year-old Gary Day, made his first court appearance Friday in Nebraska.
That's where investigators said an over-the-road trucker spotted the pair at a Love's Travel Stop just outside Omaha on Wednesday night. Concerned with the situation, the truck driver called 911. Deputies helped Sophia reunite with her family and took Day to jail.
"When law enforcement made contact with the defendant, he provided several fake names," a Nebraska prosecutor said in court Friday.
That false report is one of the misdemeanor charges he faces in Omaha. Investigators said a deputy at the truck stop used a portable fingerprint machine to determine Day's true identity.
"Sure enough, it popped up that it was him. So immediately, he has several warrants through several states, and they're all felony warrants," Sarpy County Sheriff Greg London said.
So where does Day go next?
He faces hefty felony state charges in Wisconsin and federal charges in his home state of Arkansas. The courts are right now sorting out where he will face those charges first, but in court late Friday, Day did announce his plans to fight extradition to either state.
"To be that depraved to take advantage of a 16-year-old girl, and just barely 16 at the time, like he's my age. Who does that?" Sophia's mom, Leah Franklin, told reports Thursday.

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that the state reached an incentive deal in February with an unnamed company to develop the project. Citing an anonymous source, the outlet reported the developer is Meta.
The project is expected to include a “multiyear investment of $837 million,” Bloomberg reports. The company has not yet made a public announcement, and local leaders have not disclosed the developer behind the project.

A spokesperson for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. said via email the agency certified a developer as eligible for sales tax exemptions for data centers, which is the contract referenced in the story.
“WEDC has no comment on the Bloomberg story,” the spokesperson said. “WEDC does not comment on any discussions it may or may not be having with businesses unless and until a contract is approved.”
The news comes after the city of Beaver Dam, Alliant Energy and the Beaver Dam Area Development Corp. spent much of the last year working on a potential data center development.
The project would be located on a more than 500-acre site, called the Beaver Dam Commerce Park, that the city and Alliant Energy have been marketing for years.
The city has already formed a tax increment financing district to support the project, as well as approved development and water utilities agreements with a potential developer.
Beaver Dam’s agreements were with a company working through Degas LLC, which is registered to a Delaware firm that provides registered agent and compliance services to Fortune 500 companies.
In a February project update, the Beaver Dam Area Development Corp. said the developer has “demonstrated its desire to be a good neighbor and sound environmental steward” throughout the planning process.
“It is important to note that this tremendous financial impact would be realized without the need for any city borrowing,” the statement read. “All project investment would be supported by the company’s own newly created taxable value.”
The Beaver Dam Area Development Corp. declined to comment on Bloomberg’s reporting.
According to the city’s development agreement, Beaver Dam plans to use municipal bonds for around $10 million of public infrastructure improvements. The city also plans to bond for around $100 million in development costs. Those bonds would be repaid by the property tax revenues generated from the project.
The project in Beaver Dam is one of several planned data centers in Wisconsin. Others are in varying stages of development in Mount Pleasant, Kenosha and Port Washington.

Meta's investment in the project is said to span multiple years. Details about the data center project have not been shared.
The company announced earlier this year that it intended to spend up to $65 billion in capex in 2025, with a focus on AI infrastructure. Part of that spend includes a $10bn data center in Richland Parish, northeast Louisiana. The company also has data centers across the Midwest in Iowa and Dekalb.
In the long term, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said the company will spend "hundreds of billions of dollars" on AI infrastructure.
Microsoft is also developing a data center in Mount Pleasant in Wisconsin, though paused construction on part of the site earlier this year. The company also acquired 240 acres in Kenosha in January 2025. OpenAI is reportedly considering Wisconsin for its Stargate data center project.
This year has also seen plans for a 1,000-acre data center revealed by Cloverleaf, and a 520-acre data center in Beaver Dam for an unnamed end user revealed.
Wisconsin-based utility provider We Energies proposed a new electricity rate aimed at data center customers. While this would shield other ratepayers from the costs associated with the construction of power generation and electric infrastructure needed to support data centers, it could impact data center projects in the state.

Police believed she was with 40-year-old Gary Day. Sophia is about three months pregnant and Day is believed to be the father of the unborn child.

Sophia’s mother shared an emotional message for her daughter.
"There is nothing in the world we want more than you home," Leah Franklin said.
Leah Franklin is heartbroken because she has not heard from her daughter Sophia in weeks.

Leah described her daughter as an intelligent and talented teen.
"She's extremely bright, you know, you play a board game with her, you know you're going to lose type of thing. She's great at trumpet. She's funny and very insightful," Franklin said.
Leah said Sophia’s absence is taking a toll on her father Stephen Franklin.
"It's hard to focus at work, and you just feel like you need to do something. So he has. He's been working behind the scenes, handing out flyers and just driving around and trying to do those things that he can to help find Sophie," Franklin said.
There is now a big void in this family. Sophia is greatly missed by her six other sisters and brothers. Leah said her biggest fear is that the family will never see her again.
"We've already done holidays missing her," Franklin said.
Gary Day is facing four felony charges in Wisconsin including abduction and child enticement. Franklin has this message for Day:
"She is loved and well cared for, here. There is nothing you can offer her that we don't offer her tenfold. There's nothing. There's nothing for you in having her. It's she's our girl, and that will never change, and you had no right to take her," Franklin said.
To her bright-eyed courageous child, Franklin has these words for Sophia:
"We miss you. We love you, and it doesn't matter what you've done, girl, come home. Be with us," Franklin said.

A data center developer proposes a mega campus in Beaver Dam — about 60 miles northwest of Milwaukee — that would take up nearly 800 acres and add $567 million to the city’s property tax rolls.
The developer goes by the name Degas LLC and is incorporated in Delaware, but further information on the company remains confidential. Beaver Dam Area Development Corp. Executive Vice President Trent Campbell said Thursday that city officials continue negotiating with the company under a non-disclosure agreement.
Also undisclosed is the company that ultimately would operate the proposed data center.
An attorney from Milwaukee-based law firm Quarles & Brady LLP's Madison office has been representing Degas in discussions with Beaver Dam officials. He didn’t respond Thursday to requests for comment from the Milwaukee Business Journal.
At 786 acres, the proposed Beaver Dam project would be the latest in a series of large data center projects or proposals emerging in southern Wisconsin over the past year.
The Beaver Dam site is smaller than the $3 billion Microsoft Corp. data center campus under construction in Mount Pleasant. An even larger site of 1,900 acres in Port Washington is being advanced by developer Cloverleaf Infrastructure of Houston, Texas.
Microsoft also plans a 1 million-square-foot data center campus in the city of Kenosha.
Campbell said his organization and Beaver Dam city officials are excited about the potential positive impact on the city’s tax base and economic development prospects. At an estimated $567 million property tax valuation, the project would increase the city’s tax base by about 33%, he said.
“What attracts us to the project is the taxable value creation could have a transformative impact on Beaver Dam,” Campbell said.
The impact could result in lower property tax rates and injecting funds in the city budget for investing in community improvements, he said. City officials anticipate the data center would employ 150 or more people, Campbell said.
The data center campus would be just west of Wisconsin Highway 151 in the Beaver Dam Commerce Park. The city would annex land in an adjacent unincorporated area and extend water and sewer service to the site.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin Power and Light Co., which is owned by Alliant Energy (Nasdaq: LNT) of Madison, and American Transmission Co. of Pewaukee would extend electrical power to the proposed data center campus.
Beaver Dam city officials have approved a development agreement with Degas as well as taken actions on rezoning, annexing the site from the town of Trenton and creating a tax incremental financing district, Campbell said.
The project could be built in two phases over the next several years, but Degas hasn’t decided whether there will be one or two phases, he said.
The Beaver Dam Area Development Corp. has been collaborating with Alliant Energy to recruit major projects to the Beaver Dam Commerce Park, Campbell said.
The site is a good fit for Degas because of its size, the availability of electric power, the city’s willingness to extend water and sewer services and Wisconsin’s 2023 law that created a sales and use tax exemption for the sale of property for data centers that meet certain eligibility requirements.
Degas has pledged to pay for all costs related to the proposed project including design work and infrastructure, Campbell said.
American Transmission has filed an application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin for an undisclosed “new large load addition in the Beaver Dam area,” according to PSC documents. American Transmission said it’s responding to a request by Wisconsin Power and Light for a 15-mile-long transmission line with an estimated cost of about $110 million.
Representatives of American Transmission and Alliant Energy declined to comment.
