Green Bay Walleye Reward Tag Study Continues In 2025
MADISON, Wis. – Together with Walleyes for Tomorrow, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announces the continuation of the walleye reward tag study in the Bay of Green Bay and its major tributaries.
The Bay of Green Bay and its tributaries support a world-class walleye fishery, allowing anglers to catch walleye of all sizes, including trophy-sized fish. The popularity of this fishery continues to be a major draw for anglers locally, statewide and throughout the Midwest.
The DNR began the reward tag study in spring 2024 and will continue implementing the study with walleye tagging efforts this spring, thanks to funding from Walleyes for Tomorrow. The study aims to better understand the walleye fishery and gain estimates of walleye exploitation rates (i.e., the percentage of the walleye population that anglers harvest each year).
DNR staff will tag up to 5,000 walleyes with yellow floy tags throughout five major spawning areas around Green Bay this spring – Sturgeon Bay and the Fox, Oconto, Peshtigo and Menominee rivers. In addition to the yellow floy tags, 400 red reward tags will be distributed throughout these areas.
What Happens If I Catch A Tagged Walleye?
The fish can be harvested if it is legal to do so (within bag limits, season restrictions, etc.) or released. Any tagged fish not meeting minimum length requirements should be immediately released after collecting the necessary tagging information described below. Please keep the tag intact when releasing any walleyes and follow responsible catch and release practices.
Anglers are encouraged to report all walleyes that are caught with any color floy tag. We ask anglers to report the following information regarding their tagged fish: tag number, tag color, species, length, location caught, date caught and whether the fish was harvested or released.
Reward tags will be red and say, “REWARD $100.” All red reward tags will have a date printed on them, which is the date the reward is valid until. While the tagged walleye does not need to be harvested to receive the $100 reward, anglers must provide proper verification that they caught a walleye with a reward tag. Verification must be done in one of the following ways:

Anglers that report a yellow or green (from previous tagging years) floy tag will receive information about the fish, including date, location, size, sex and possibly age at the time of tagging. Anglers do not need to provide picture verification or mail in the physical tag when reporting walleyes with a yellow or green floy tag.
Reports of captured or harvested tagged walleyes will help the DNR guide walleye management throughout Green Bay and its tributaries by tracking angler harvest, exploitation rate, spawning site fidelity, summer movement patterns and growth rates.

The Green Bay Packers Were Recently Linked to Cooper Kupp
With all of their top choices off the market, many Packers fans turned their attention to former Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who was recently released by Los Angeles. However, there were also many fans who did not want to see Green Bay sign the former Super Bowl MVP.
In 2021, Kupp won the NFL wide receiver Triple Crown with 145 receptions, 1,947 yards, and 16 touchdowns. However, since that season, he has not played more than 12 games in a single season due to a wide variety of injuries.
Last season, the one-time Pro Bowler had 67 receptions for 710 yards and six touchdowns.
When the 2025 NFL season starts, he will be 32 years old, and he was reportedly seeking a multi-year deal.
Despite these factors, the Packers were named as one of the teams that was interested in him when his release became official.

Of course, the Packers do need some depth at the wide receiver position with Christian Watson likely out until November as he recovers from a torn ACL.
However, it now seems apparent Green Bay will be addressing that need in the NFL Draft.

Much of Wisconsin will be in the path of an intense March storm starting on Friday that will impact about 100 million people in the United States as the sprawling multi-day system threatens fires, blizzards, tornadoes, and flooding as it tracks eastward across the Great Plains.
People in Wisconsin could see the heavy thunderstorms, with tornadoes and hail possible.
Scientists said the storm’s strength and potential for far-reaching impacts is notable, but its timing isn’t particularly unusual.
Extreme weather can pop up in spring because storms feed on big temperature differences between the warmth that’s starting to show up and the lingering chill of winter.
“If there’s a time of the year where a storm like this can deliver these coast-to-coast impacts, we are in it,” said Benjamin Reppert, meteorologist at Penn State University.
The National Weather Service forecast strong winds stretching Friday from the Canadian border to the Rio Grande, with gusts up to 80 mph, which creates a significant fire risk in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.
Meanwhile, a winter blast was expected farther north in parts of the Rockies and Northern Plains, with possible blizzard conditions in the Dakotas and Minnesota.
The central region from the Gulf Coast to Wisconsin is at risk of severe thunderstorms that could spawn tornadoes and hail.
On Saturday, severe storms are forecast to move toward Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and then into Florida. Potential flooding was a concern from the Central Gulf Coast through the upper Ohio Valley.
The turbulent weather is expected to arrive on the East Coast Sunday with strong winds and a flash flooding risk in localized areas. Heavy rain was forecast along the Interstate 95 corridor south to Jacksonville, Florida.
Reppert noted that temperatures in the upper atmosphere in much of the central and eastern U.S. are close to record levels for this time of year, while a cool air mass behind the storm in the western states is one of the coolest on record for that region and this time of year. He said that combination could be behind part of this storm’s expected strength.
Russ Schumacher, a climatologist at Colorado State University, said the storm could become a bomb cyclone Friday afternoon or evening — a designation given when a storm intensifies so rapidly that atmospheric pressure drops a certain amount in a 24-hour period. That would mean higher winds and more intense rainfall.
In addition to fuel from big temperature swings, the storm will be shaped by the jet stream. In a fairly typical position for this time of year, it’s diving south across the U.S. and will help lift air and moisture into the atmosphere to fall back as rain.
The storm also will tap into heat and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, also referred to as the Gulf of America as declared by President Donald Trump, which is 2 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 to 2.2 degrees Celsius) warmer than historic averages.
“You kind of have this Goldilocks situation,” said Ryan Torn, professor of atmospheric and environmental sciences at the University at Albany, referring to the mix of ingredients in the atmosphere that will add to the storm’s strength.

7 local teams competing for state titles this week
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The top teams in Wisconsin girls basketball are all converging at the Resch Center as the WIAA girls state basketball tournament returns to Green Bay.
On Championship Saturday, Xavier lost in the D3 title game to Oostburg 49-36, while St. Mary Catholic came up short in the D4 championship to Cuba City 53-50. At night in the D1 championship Kimberly will play Muskego after beating Appleton East in the semis Friday night.
On Friday morning, Lourdes lost 41-28 in a Division 5 semifinal to Barneveld. On Friday afternoon in Division 2, West De Pere came up short 71-58 in its semifinal against Wauwatosa East.
On Thursday afternoon in Division 3, #4 seed Xavier upset #1 seed Elk Mound 45-35 to advance to Saturday’s championship game. In the other D3 semi, Laconia dropped a hard-fought game 66-57 to Oostburg.

All told, there are 7 teams from northeast Wisconsin contending for a state title, with at least one local school competing in each division.
Kimberly, making their first state tournament appearance since 2019, is the top seed in Division 1, beating 2024 Division 2 champions Pewaukee in overtime to advance from the Hartford sectional. They won the Fox Valley Association in the regular season.
Appleton East, the #4 seed in Division 1, is back for the first time since their runner-up finish in 2022. They finished 4th in the Fox Valley Association and beat Eau Claire Memorial 68-65 in 2OT to win the Marshfield sectional.
West De Pere is the #3 seed in Division 2, making their 2nd-ever state tournament appearance. They won the Bay Conference and beat Waukesha West 66-55 in the Fond du Lac sectional.
Laconia, the two-time defending champion at Division 4, moved up to Division 3 and received the #3 seed. They won the Flyway Conference and took down Edgerton, 57-42, in the Evansville sectional to make it to the state tournament.
Xavier, the 2024 runner-up in Division 3, is the #4 seed in their 4th state tournament appearance. They finished 3rd in the Bay Conference and beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 63-45 in the Seymour sectional.
St. Mary Catholic is the #2 seed in Division 4, making their third state appearance and their first since a title win in 2009. They tied Manitowoc Lutheran for the North Division championship in the Big East Conference and beat Manitowoc Lutheran in the Oconto Falls sectional, 65-54.
Lourdes Academy is the #2 seed in Division 5, having beaten last year’s champions Albany/Monticello 57-43 in the Beaver Dam sectional. They won the East Division of the Trailways Conference. This is their 2nd state tournament appearance, finishing runner-up at Division 4 in 2012.
