What Tools Does Disaster Response Use for Water Damage Clean-Up?

We only use the best equipment! With our extensive experience in the Racine restoration industry, we've acquired state-of-the-art tools designed to tackle a wide range of challenges. This experience has also allowed our technicians to identify which type of equipment is best for a particular situation. Some of the most common water damage restoration tools we use include:

Infrared

Infrared Cameras

Our infrared cameras give us the ability to see moisture in walls and ceilings that is not visible to the naked eye, almost like having "X-ray" vision. This capability allows us to detect and address trapped and hidden humidity, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.

Moisture

Moisture Meters

We use moisture meters to measure moisture levels in cellulose material. Before and after the drying process, we will conduct moisture readings in all areas of your property. If we detect moisture in an unaffected area of your building, we'll get to work quickly to dry it.

Air Movers

Air Movers

This equipment is designed to work in conjunction with our dehumidifiers. While our dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and convert it to a liquid, our Air Mover helps to circulate this moisture in the air so that the dehumidifier can effectively remove it.

Generators

Ozone Generators

These advanced tools enable us to cleanse affected surfaces and the air in a more effective manner. Ozone Generators work by causing oxygen molecules to implode, making them a valuable deodorization tool.

Xtractor

Xtreme Xtractor

This tool is great for tackling tough moisture after water damage. It allows us to apply direct pressure to a surface, like a carpet, that has soaked up water. The pressure helps draw out the water, making it easier to remove.

Top 3 Types of Water Damage You Should Know About

Water damage can strike without warning and can wreak havoc on your property, leaving you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or an overflowing appliance, your property needs immediate water damage clean-up in Racine, WI, to prevent further harm. Here are the top three types of water damage you should know about:

Clean Water Damage

Clean Water Damage

Clean

This type of water damage happens from a "clean" source, such as rainwater or a broken pipe in your home. It's easier to clean up than others on this list but can still cause extensive property damage when ignored.

Gray Water Damage

Gray Water Damage

Gray-Water

Gray water damage stems from appliances such as toilets without feces, washing machines, and dishwashers. Gray water sometimes contains bacteria and contaminants that can make you or your family sick.

Black Water Damage

Black Water Damage

Black-Water

The name alone indicates the severity of this type of water damage. It's caused by backed-up sewer lines, river flooding, and standing water that supports bacteria growth. Black water presents serious health hazards and needs to be handled by professional water damage contractors.

If you suspect your home or business has been damaged by one or more of the types of water above, take the following steps:

Stop the Source of Water
  • Be Safe: Turn off all electricity running through your property. Don't go near or touch any water you believe to be contaminated.
  • Stop the Source of Water: If you're able, put a stop to the water at its source. That way, you can prevent more damage.
  • Call Disaster Response: Contact our water damage company ASAP for water restoration services. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

Our Process for Water Damage Restoration in Racine, WI

Having a water damage restoration company by your side who knows how to remediate moisture is a key factor in getting your life back on track. At Disaster Response, we have refined our process over 40+ years of water damage clean-up experience. That way, we can provide customers with reliable, comprehensive service when they need it the most.

We utilize powerful pumps and vacuums to eliminate standing water from your property. Swift water removal is essential in minimizing damage and lowering the likelihood of mold growth. Our team is dedicated to ensuring efficient water extraction to prevent any additional complications.

After extracting water from your property, we dry and dehumidify the impacted areas. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to do so to eliminate moisture from walls, floors, and furniture. Proper drying helps prevent warping, swelling, and the growth of mold.

Whenever we deal with water damage, we have to address the potential contaminants and bacteria that can enter your home. We make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas to create a safe living environment. This involves cleaning carpets, upholstery, and personal belongings. Our technicians also use antimicrobial treatments to prevent mold and bacterial growth.

The final step in the process is the restoration of your home to its pre-damage condition. This comprehensive restoration process may encompass a range of tasks, from minor repairs such as replacing drywall and installing new carpeting to major reconstruction efforts. Rest assured that Disaster Response is fully equipped to manage all aspects of water damage restoration, from start to finish.

  • Maintenance: Have your business or home's roof, appliances, and plumbing inspected by professionals to spot early signs of wear and tear.
  • Water Alarms: If there is a flood or leak in your home, a water alarm can alert you so that you can take action immediately.
  • Drainage: Your home needs proper drainage systems in place at all times. To prevent water buildup, be sure to unclog your downspouts and gutters.
  • Cracks and Gaps: Be sure to seal up any cracks and gaps in your property's foundation to limit water from getting inside.

RACINE — A Racine teenager is in critical condition and several others are hurt following an early morning car crash near 16th Street and Taylor Avenue.

The Racine County Sheriff's Office said that at around 1:00 a.m. Sunday, they clocked a driver traveling more than 90 mph. Moments later, that driver crashed into an SUV at a red light.

Veronica Gordon lives in the area and watched the whole incident unfold.

“I’m like oh my god, oh my god, this car is not going to stop he's just going to keep going,” Gordon recalled. “That’s exactly what he did and he smacked that car.”

Inside the car stopped at the red light were five teenagers. All five sustained injuries in the crash. The driver was a 17-year-old girl who officers reported was in critical condition.

Gordon told TMJ4’s Tahleel Mohieldin she didn't know until later that her own nephew and grandson were in the car.

“They're both lucky to be alive today,” Gordon said.

She said the crash left her nephew with a dislocated hip and her grandson with shoulder and back pain, the extent of his injuries not yet known.

RCSO said the man responsible was a 34-year-old man with a prior OWI charge, who was convicted of Operating While Revoked and Fleeing and Eluding.

He was previously sentenced to 18 months in prison and two years on parole. The Department of Corrections is still supervising him, and a hold was placed on him.

RCSO said the 34-year-old appeared to have multiple broken bones and other injuries and was transported to Froedtert Hospital. He is believed to have non-life-threatening injuries.

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.

RACINE, WI — The Joann Fabrics store at 2629 S. Green Bay Road is preparing to close as part of the company’s nationwide shutdown following its recent bankruptcy filing.

While an exact closing date has not been set, Wisconsin state regulations require the store to remain open for at least 60 days from the start of liquidation, meaning it could close by mid-April. But, with a new liquidation company overseeing the process, some Joann Fabrics stores may remain open until June 1.

“Our main estimate right now is sometime in May,” a local source told Racine County Eye.

This person asked to remain anonymous.

The news has hit Racine store employees hard, this person said, but workers remain committed to providing the service customers have come to expect.

Joann Fabrics is a retailer in the crafting and sewing community founded in 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Hilda and Berthold Reich, along with Sigmund and Matilda Rohrbach. “Joann” is a mash-up of the names of the daughters from each each family: Joan and Jacqueline Ann.

What started as a single store grew into the nation’s largest fabric and craft retailer, operating approximately 800 stores across 49 states.

However, after facing significant financial struggles, including $615 million in debt and supply chain disruptions, Joann Fabrics filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2025. Initially, the company planned to close 500 of its 800 stores, but after a recent asset auction, it was determined that all remaining locations would shut down.

In a statement to the media, Joann’s leadership expressed their disappointment over the outcome.

“Joann leadership, our board, advisors, and legal partners made every possible effort to pursue a more favorable outcome that would keep the company in business,” company officials are quoted in a story from Axios. “We are committed to working constructively with the winning bidder to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the impact on all.”

Liquidation sales have begun, and customers are encouraged to use any remaining gift cards by February 28, the Axios story continues. Final closure dates for all locations will be announced in the coming weeks.

With Joann Fabrics closing, local customers may be looking for alternative stores to purchase fabric, sewing notions, and craft supplies. Here are a few options in the Racine area:

How gas prices have changed in Racine in the last week

While prices at the pump are lower than they were at this time last year, fuel costs have remained relatively steady compared to this time last month, per AAA data. The national average gas price sits at $3.13, with states in the South seeing the lowest prices in the nation. At $2.67 per gallon, Mississippi currently has the lowest average fuel price, while California has the highest at $4.81.

While President Trump agreed to a 30-day pause on imposing 25% tariffs for Canadian and Mexican imports earlier this month, concerns about the economic effects of potential tariffs remain. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan predicts that tariffs on Canada could have the largest impact on gas prices in the Northeast, Great Lakes, Midwest, and Rocky Mountain regions.

"Trump's new trade war has already triggered retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, escalating tensions," De Haan said in a statement earlier this month. "While, on paper, tariffs on Canadian energy could have a significant impact on fuel prices, a prolonged trade war could weaken global economies, reducing demand and partially offsetting the effects of tariffs."

Microsoft in Wisconsin; data center plans

Microsoft is canceling some data center leases in other parts of the country. But what, if anything, does that mean for the technology giant's billions planned for Racine County?

The Brief

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. - Microsoft is canceling some data center leases in other parts of the country.

What, if anything, does that mean for the technology giant's billions planned for Racine County?

Microsoft, which now owns about 1,900 acres in Mount Pleasant, tells FOX6 it's still committed to the original plans for a $3.3B investment in Wisconsin.

What we know:

What was once Mount Pleasant farmland is being transformed to become a future home for Microsoft artificial intelligence data centers. The company owns roughly 1,900 acres in Mount Pleasant.

But, financial analysts at TD Cowen, a division of TD Securities, say Microsoft is cutting back elsewhere.

They found Microsoft canceled renting from at least two private data center operators and also walked away from finalizing some other leases.

The report says their initial reaction is that "this is tied to Microsoft potentially being in an oversupply position."

The TD Cowen analysts also mentioned Microsoft's December decision to pause some construction in Wisconsin.

SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News

In December, the Village of Mount Pleasant said Microsoft paused some construction "to incorporate new data center designs," but that the village stated it didn’t expect the overall scope of the project to change.

The village added:

"Microsoft to date has proceeded with construction of its data center development in Mount Pleasant at an unbelievably fast pace. The company is years ahead of schedule in satisfying its financial commitments to the village under our development agreement."

What they're saying:

Since the TD report on February 21, 2025, Microsoft's stock has dropped about $15.

Annex Wealth Management’s chief economist, Brian Jacobsen, said people had questions. But his view is different.

"I understand why the market was reacting to it and why people might be wondering what’s going on, because if they are canceling leases, does it mean that they have overestimated demand for their data centers and are they beginning to pull back?" he said. "They have actually been leasing a lot of data centers, but they also own a lot of data centers. And I think that Microsoft really wants to be committed to data centers and they would just really rather own, rather than regularly renew leases.

"Keep in mind, Microsoft owns and leases more than 300 data centers, so if they cancel leases on two of them, which is what the report suggests, that doesn’t worry me too much about their commitment to building and owning those data centers over the long term."

Microsoft's response:

A Microsoft spokesperson told FOX6 News:

"Our plans to spend over $80B on infrastructure in the US this fiscal year remain on track, and our $3.3B commitment to Wisconsin remains unchanged as we continue to grow at a record pace to meet customer demand."

That the same $3.3 billion Microsoft originally proposed for Wisconsin.

Foxconn déjà vu

The backstory:

It might be déjà vu for some remembering Foxconn.

In 2018, Foxconn promised 13,000 jobs for Wisconsin. That large number didn't materialize at the site in Mount Pleasant. Instead, the company recently stated it was employing more than 1,000 workers in Wisconsin. Much of the land Microsoft purchased was originally cleared for Foxconn, which had the first option to purchase it.

Economist weighs in

What's next:

Mount Pleasant said the first phase of the Microsoft construction is expected to be done this year.
