Keep Yourself One Step Ahead Of Adverse Weather

Keep Yourself One Step Ahead Of Adverse Weather

Despite the best efforts of meteorologists around the world, weather can be difficult to predict. A sudden shower can pop up at any minute, causing dangerous flash floods. Lighting can start a fire in seconds, and high winds can turn deadly for anyone at any time.  Knowing what to do in the event of a weather disaster is essential to keeping your home and family safe.

Watch The Forecast And The Skies

Pay attention to the weather forecast to be aware of any approaching storms. Check for updates on your local TV and radio stations or a trusted weather app. Know the difference between a storm watch and a warning:

  • Storm Watch - Severe weather is possible in and near the watch area.
  • Storm Warning - Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar and poses a danger to life and property.

If you do not have access to a weather report, keep an eye on the sky for the warning signs of dangerous weather. Common indicators include increasing winds, lightning, and dark skies. If any of these signs increase, seek shelter immediately.

Seek Shelter Immediately

Your first priority is to get your family to a safe place indoors. Lightning, wind, and ice can damage outdoor power lines, making them very dangerous to be near. Be careful of water or metal as they conduct electricity, which can be harmful during a storm. Keep everyone off the phone and computer.

Designate one room or area of your home as a storm shelter. This should be located on the lowest level of the home with as many walls as possible between you and the outside, such as a closet or hallway. Stay away from all windows.

Prepare Supplies Before Disaster Strikes

Prepare a storm safety kit before any type of bad weather occurs. There are several items that you will need if you lose power or are stuck in one place for an extended period of time. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the kit is kept. Your safety kit should include the following items:

  • Landline telephone that does not require electric operation.
  • Hand crank or battery operated AM/FM radio.
  • LED flashlights for every member of the family. Include extra batteries.
  • First aid kit with essential medicines including a copy of your prescription medicines.
  • Drinking water supply to last three days per person.
  • Non-perishable, ready-to-eat food and a manual can opener.
  • If needed, pet food and other things necessary for your pet.
  • Towels, toilet paper, bathroom items and other sanitary items
  • A toolbox that contains: Duct tape, hammer and nails, screwdrivers, wrench, and a small hatchet.
  • Blankets and sleeping gear.
