North Little Rock School District voters rejected the district’s proposed 4-mill districtwide property tax increase, which would have brought the mill rate from 48.3 to 52.3, according to unofficial election results available Tuesday night.
The millage increase was expected to generate $70 million, and if passed, would have gone toward a new middle school — with a total price tag of $68 million — along with $30 million in Ole Main renovations and between $18 and $20 million for a new indoor sports complex near the current high school’s football field.

The district was slated to receive $20.8 million in state partnership funding for the middle school — which would replace both middle school buildings off Lakeview Road — but must sign construction contracts for the project by Jan. 20, 2025 to secure it, which Chief Financial Officer Brian Brown said would not happen without a successful millage.
NEXT STEPS
Superintendent Greg Pilewski said the district will “regroup and retool,” honing in on a potential special election in May 2025 wherein voters would be faced with the same millage proposal, assuming the district successfully secured an extention of state partnership funding past the January deadline.
The special election would have to be approved by the board, a process which Pilewski said the district “would immediately go through,” paired with continuing outreach efforts until May.
If voters reject the proposal again, the district will be forced to return any state funds it received for the new middle school and “go back to the drawing board” to reassess the district’s priorities, Pilewski added.
The district would also potentially reapply for state funding, although Pilewski noted that could take another four years to materialize, noting that he has been working toward the millage increase and associated funding for the district’s projects since 2020.
The millage increase will cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $80 a year in school district taxes. The owner of a $200,000 home will pay an additional $160 with the 4-mill tax increase.
A mill is one-tenth of 1 cent. One mill levied on an assessed value of $1,000 yields $1 in property taxes due. Arkansas counties assess property at 20% of actual value. The assessed value of a $100,000 house is $20,000. That $20,000 multiplied by 0.004 or 4 mills would generate an $80 tax increase.
VOTERS WEIGH IN
“I feel like they should either create organizations or programs specifically for that and for people to be able to put in as much as they want,” Sabrina McDaniel, the parent of a 9-year-old daughter in the school district, said.
She said that funding the projects should be “optional” for the community, adding that the district could host charity events and other initiatives to raise money.
McDaniel, who was a senior at North Little Rock High School when the district passed its last millage increase in 2012, said she would like to see the district focus its resources on providing more affordable after-school and summer activities for students.
For Michael Reeves, a special programs leader with the city’s parks and recreational department, the middle school “needs the upgrades bad.”
The middle school’s former paraprofessional said the buildings are outdated, citing safety concerns related to cameras in both buildings that leave “dark spots” across the campuses.
Reeves said that the middle school is the oldest building in the district and “needs replacing,” a project he said would be “best for the kids.”

Allison Collection of World War II Photographs
During World War II, James Allison, a sports writer working for the Houston Press, noticed that many photographs not printed in the daily newspaper were routinely discarded. He received permission to save these images, and by war's end he had amassed a collection of more than 4,600 photographs. In August 1977, Allison donated his collection to the Arkansas Museum of Science and History, located in the historic Arsenal building in MacArthur Park. Today, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History owns and preserves these images.

Having only recently released his debut EP (Waves on a Sunset), it seems unlikely that a sellout tour would be happening right now for Wetmore, but that just shows the way his music is resonating with fans. The band launched into “What Would You Do?” and the show was off and running. Wetmore’s live show is a stark departure from the sound of his EP, with the full band adding much more energy and power to the songs. On the EP, “What Would You Do?” is much more laid back with the vocals mostly being backed by a beat but live, it’s a full-on classic rock song.
The more classic country “Silverado Blue” came next, with “Break First” wrapping up a powerful show opening. During “Break First,” a fan threw their phone on stage with it recording, which led to Wetmore recording himself singing the chorus to the delight of everyone in the crowd (the fan did eventually get her phone back). You could tell the band was aware of the comic value of their costumes, with Wetmore stating at one point, “I’m about to sing a sentimental song… in a Super Troopers’ Costume.”
An unexpected turn came when the band exited the stage, leaving Wetmore alone with a keyboard. He told the crowd about piano being his first instrument and went on to play an extensive medley of songs that wowed all in attendance. He started off with Beethoven but then changed to the intro of the Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” with the audience providing the lyrics. He closed out his solo set with Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Great Balls of Fire” and The Commodores’ “Easy.”
Keeping the intimate feeling of the solo set, Hannah McFarland returned to the stage to duet with Wetmore. When she walked out though she was no longer in her Buc-ees jumpsuit, but a full-on Tucker Wetmore costume, complete with a fake mustache. The two then sang an amazing version of Chris Stapleton’s “Whiskey and You” from Traveller.
Now without Super Trooper costumes, the band returned to the stage to get the energy back up as the show shifted into its final act. Wetmore introduced “Bad Habit” from his upcoming full-length album, and also reached back for a rocking cover of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.”
As things really started to wind down, the crowd showed their appreciation by “Calling the Hogs” (a University of Arkansas football cheer) for the band. Wetmore had to admit, “That was cool as s***.” As he thanked the fans for coming out and spending their hard-earned money, he let them know that they gave him “The best damn Halloween party I’ve ever been to.”
