Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

According to the data released by the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections, over 59 percent of registered voters in the county have already cast their ballots for the election by way of early voting.

Election Day Tips
â– If you are unsure whether you are registered to vote or eligible to vote in a particular election, contact the Elections Office before Election Day or use the online voter status verification form.
â– Your voter information card has the name and address of your polling place, or you can obtain it by using the online voter status verification form. Be sure that you know how to get to your polling place.
â– To be allowed to vote, you must show a valid form of identification, which must contain the voter’s name, photograph, and signature and must not be expired. Here is a list of the acceptable forms of identification.
â– The identification required and checked at the polls is used solely to confirm the voter’s identity, not to verify the voter’s identification number or address. The photograph on the identification is compared to the person standing before the poll worker, and the signature on the card is compared to the voter’s signature on the precinct roster.
â– If you are voting at a school, you should avoid voting at the arrival and dismissal time for the school.
â– Use the sample ballot mailed to you by the elections office or available on this website to decide how you want to vote before you go into the polling place. This is particularly helpful when there are many races and constitutional amendments and/or referendums on the ballot (this is typical in the November elections in even-numbered years). You may bring marked sample ballots into the polls to help you remember how you want to vote; however, you may not leave them in the voting booths or show them to other voters.
â– While they are in their polling place voting, voters may wear t-shirts, buttons, hats, etc., which express their political preferences as long as they are not actively campaigning.
â– Please ask the poll workers about the polling place setup and voting equipment if you have questions they cannot answer.
â– If you need assistance in voting due to blindness, disability, or inability to read or write, you may have someone of your choice (or two poll workers) assist you in voting. You may not have your employer, an agent, or an officer or agent of your union assist you in voting.
â– If you do not vote for any candidates or more candidates than are allowed in a contest, only that contest will be affected; any other contests in which the number of candidates are selected will be counted.
â– If you make a mistake in voting, tell the clerk in charge of the polling place, give him or her your spoiled ballot, and you will be issued a replacement ballot. Your spoiled ballot will be sealed and no one will be allowed to see it. You may not receive more than two replacement ballots per election.
â– If you receive a Vote-by-Mail Ballot but decide to vote at an Early Voting site or your polling location on Election Day, please bring your Mail Ballot to surrender to an election official. Doing so will help reduce potential wait times and expedite your check-in process.
â– If you suspect that you have encountered voter fraud, you can report it to the Division of Elections at 877-868-3737.
â– No photography is permitted in the polling room or early voting area except for an elector’s ballot.

An overhaul of the bus network in and around D.C. — the first major redesign of the system in half a century — will get a final vote this week.
Metro officials announced plans for the redesign earlier this year, and in response to thousands of public comments, the agency changed about half of the planned routes.
