What Tools Does Disaster Response Use for Water Damage Clean-Up?

We only use the best equipment! With our extensive experience in the St. Petersburg restoration industry, we've acquired state-of-the-art tools designed to tackle a wide range of challenges. This experience has also allowed our technicians to identify which type of equipment is best for a particular situation. Some of the most common water damage restoration tools we use include:

Infrared

Infrared Cameras

Our infrared cameras give us the ability to see moisture in walls and ceilings that is not visible to the naked eye, almost like having "X-ray" vision. This capability allows us to detect and address trapped and hidden humidity, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.

Moisture

Moisture Meters

We use moisture meters to measure moisture levels in cellulose material. Before and after the drying process, we will conduct moisture readings in all areas of your property. If we detect moisture in an unaffected area of your building, we'll get to work quickly to dry it.

Air Movers

Air Movers

This equipment is designed to work in conjunction with our dehumidifiers. While our dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and convert it to a liquid, our Air Mover helps to circulate this moisture in the air so that the dehumidifier can effectively remove it.

Generators

Ozone Generators

These advanced tools enable us to cleanse affected surfaces and the air in a more effective manner. Ozone Generators work by causing oxygen molecules to implode, making them a valuable deodorization tool.

Xtractor

Xtreme Xtractor

This tool is great for tackling tough moisture after water damage. It allows us to apply direct pressure to a surface, like a carpet, that has soaked up water. The pressure helps draw out the water, making it easier to remove.

Top 3 Types of Water Damage You Should Know About

Water damage can strike without warning and can wreak havoc on your property, leaving you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or an overflowing appliance, your property needs immediate water damage clean-up in St. Petersburg, FL, to prevent further harm. Here are the top three types of water damage you should know about:

Clean Water Damage

Clean Water Damage

Clean

This type of water damage happens from a "clean" source, such as rainwater or a broken pipe in your home. It's easier to clean up than others on this list but can still cause extensive property damage when ignored.

Gray Water Damage

Gray Water Damage

Gray-Water

Gray water damage stems from appliances such as toilets without feces, washing machines, and dishwashers. Gray water sometimes contains bacteria and contaminants that can make you or your family sick.

Black Water Damage

Black Water Damage

Black-Water

The name alone indicates the severity of this type of water damage. It's caused by backed-up sewer lines, river flooding, and standing water that supports bacteria growth. Black water presents serious health hazards and needs to be handled by professional water damage contractors.

If you suspect your home or business has been damaged by one or more of the types of water above, take the following steps:

Stop the Source of Water
  • Be Safe: Turn off all electricity running through your property. Don't go near or touch any water you believe to be contaminated.
  • Stop the Source of Water: If you're able, put a stop to the water at its source. That way, you can prevent more damage.
  • Call Disaster Response: Contact our water damage company ASAP for water restoration services. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

Our Process for Water Damage Restoration in St. Petersburg, FL

Having a water damage restoration company by your side who knows how to remediate moisture is a key factor in getting your life back on track. At Disaster Response, we have refined our process over 40+ years of water damage clean-up experience. That way, we can provide customers with reliable, comprehensive service when they need it the most.

We utilize powerful pumps and vacuums to eliminate standing water from your property. Swift water removal is essential in minimizing damage and lowering the likelihood of mold growth. Our team is dedicated to ensuring efficient water extraction to prevent any additional complications.

After extracting water from your property, we dry and dehumidify the impacted areas. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to do so to eliminate moisture from walls, floors, and furniture. Proper drying helps prevent warping, swelling, and the growth of mold.

Whenever we deal with water damage, we have to address the potential contaminants and bacteria that can enter your home. We make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas to create a safe living environment. This involves cleaning carpets, upholstery, and personal belongings. Our technicians also use antimicrobial treatments to prevent mold and bacterial growth.

The final step in the process is the restoration of your home to its pre-damage condition. This comprehensive restoration process may encompass a range of tasks, from minor repairs such as replacing drywall and installing new carpeting to major reconstruction efforts. Rest assured that Disaster Response is fully equipped to manage all aspects of water damage restoration, from start to finish.

  • Maintenance: Have your business or home's roof, appliances, and plumbing inspected by professionals to spot early signs of wear and tear.
  • Water Alarms: If there is a flood or leak in your home, a water alarm can alert you so that you can take action immediately.
  • Drainage: Your home needs proper drainage systems in place at all times. To prevent water buildup, be sure to unclog your downspouts and gutters.
  • Cracks and Gaps: Be sure to seal up any cracks and gaps in your property's foundation to limit water from getting inside.

Florida officials are calling for what they expect to be the state’s largest evacuation in seven years as a new storm barrels toward the region with the potential for significant destruction, all while relief workers continue to help communities battered in six states by Hurricane Helene.

A second disastrous hurricane within two weeks would test the capacity of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has deployed more than 1,500 personnel in communities throughout the Southeast but faces questions about its dwindling disaster relief money and limited staffing levels.

As Hurricane Milton plows towards Tampa Bay, state and local officials are pleading with residents to heed the call to leave.

Much about Milton, including its location and intensity upon landfall, are still unknown. But that uncertainty doesn’t excuse inaction, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said in a Sunday news conference.

In Pinellas, zones A, B and C will mostly likely fall under mandatory evacuation orders as soon as Monday, Gualtieri said. And that means scrambles at the grocery store, traffic jams and booked-up hotels for Tampa Bay residents.

Here’s what you can do now to prepare:

Check your evacuation zone. If Pinellas evacuates up to zone C on Monday, it will be the largest evacuation of the county since 2022′s Hurricane Ian. Even if you think you’re safe, check your zone on the Florida Department of Emergency Management website.

Prepare a disaster supply kit. Now is the time to prepare emergency supplies or restock from Hurricane Helene. That includes a two-week supply of medications and food and water to last up to seven days. For more information about what to pack, check the Tampa Bay Times’s hurricane kit checklist.

Find a safe place to stay. Florida officials recommend staying with a friend or family member who lives nearby but will not have to evacuate. Hotels or motels outside of a mandatory evacuation zone are also an option, but be sure to book a reservation before leaving your home. The longer you wait to make a reservation, the less likely you are to find a vacancy.

If those aren’t an option, go to a county-run shelter. Not every shelter can accommodate special needs or pets, so check which are suitable to your needs now. Supplies at shelters may be limited, so bring your hurricane supply kit with you.

Don’t wait until the last minute to leave. If Pinellas evacuates zones A, B and C, that means about half the county and much more traffic at the start of the week. Moving half a million residents out of harm’s way would take roughly 26 hours, said Pinellas County spokesperson Sydney Critser.

Hillsborough’s evacuation zone A adds another 187,000, according to county spokesperson Todd Pratt.

The large number of people evacuating will likely cause delays and major congestion, according to the state Department of Emergency Management. The stronger the storm grows, the worse the traffic will be.

You may not get back home right away. Residents of Pinellas’ barrier islands had to wait five days before returning home after Helene. Milton will likely be no different, Gualtieri said Sunday. That makes it all the more important to prepare to leave early and get homes as secure as possible, he added.

TAMPA, Fla. – To prepare for Hurricane Milton, the waterlines for St. Pete Beach, a resort city on a Pinellas County barrier island, are set to turn off on Tuesday morning.

Pinellas County officials issued orders Sunday to evacuate about 6,600 patients from six hospitals, 25 nursing homes, and 44 assisted living facilities.

“If you’re on that west coast of Florida and barrier islands, just assume that you likely are going to be called upon to evacuate,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said on Sunday.

HURRICANE SPECIALIST: Milton stronger, forecast to strike Florida’s west coast as a major hurricane this week

Meteorologists forecasted Milton’s impact was likely going to be more destructive in coastal areas. While Helene caused 6 to 8 feet of storm surge, Milton was set to cause over 10 feet.

The precise location of the landfall Wednesday evening at Florida’s Gulf Coast remained uncertain, but a Category 3 or 4 was a possibility as the hurricane gained strength in the Gulf of Mexico.

“We are preparing ... for the largest evacuation that we have seen, most likely since 2017, Hurricane Irma,” said Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis deployed 150 dump trucks to Pinellas barrier islands, Manatee barrier islands, and other locations that have extensive debris in an effort to both recover from Hurricane Helene and prepare for Hurricane Milton.

Today (Oct. 6) at 3 p.m., the City of St. Petersburg opened a debris management site for residents and private haulers to drop off storm debris at 7401 22nd Ave. N. Those heading to this location should enter on 72nd Street and exit on 22nd. Avenue North.

Both Pinellas County and The Gabber Newspaper encourage residents and visitors to get their forecast updates at the National Hurricane Center. The NHC releases updated forecasts and advisories at 2 a.m., 5 a.m., 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m., and 11 p.m. We strongly discourage readers from taking weather advice from any other models.

The City asks that you only bring brush to brush sites if possible. Hazardous materials will not be accepted and should be stored in a safe location until after the storm.

All sites are open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., seven days a week, with updates announced on social media.

Residents should bring their driver’s license or a water bill. Separate different types of debris and ensure you are able to unload the debris yourself as staff will be unable to assist with the unloading process.

If you hired a private hauler, the City asks that you fill out this form before their arrival.

“Have a truck? Want to help? Help your neighbor. If you have a truck, please contact your neighbors to see if you can assist with bringing their debris to this site. As Milton continues to develop, the City is encouraging everyone to secure as much storm debris as possible,” the City wrote in a press release.

Visit stpete.org for more information on the Helene debris collection sites.

Alert Pinellas: Starting today, anyone can take storm debris to the Pinellas County Solid Waste Disposal Facility via the 34th Street gate. There will be no charge and the gate will be open 24/7 until operations are stopped by Hurricane Milton. Learn More: Pinellas.gov/debris.
