Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

Red Bull Heavy Metal, a snowboarding and rail-riding competition, is set to return to downtown St. Paul on Feb. 1.
The street snowboard competition challenges athletes to navigate a custom rail-riding course built around the Minnesota State Capitol building steps.
The competition will offer three zones, each designed to test the snowboarders’ skills when faced with different kinds of street snowboarding. The featured obstacles include rails and gaps, stairs, benches, and snow ramps.
Some big names in snowboarding will be in attendance this year, from former winners to rail-riding legends. Two Minnesota natives, Joe Sexton and Benny Milam, a 2022 winner and runner-up in last year’s competition, are returning for the event.
Red Bull has a history of bringing extreme winter sports events to Minnesota. Red Bull Crashed Ice had a seven-year run in St. Paul, drawing thousands of attendees for its mashup of ice-skating and bobsled races (both St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter and former Mayor Chris Coleman participated as competitors).
The snowboarding-focused Red Bull Heavy Metal was launched in the early 2000s and was hosted by Duluth in 2022 before coming to St. Paul in early 2024.
“Red Bull Heavy Metal has come so far since 2022. It’s really become a staple in the world of snowboarding,” Milam said. “I think it’s so great that we can bring it back to Minnesota, and to St. Paul, for another year. Last year brought out a crowd unlike anything I’d ever seen, so I’m ready for this year to be even bigger!”
Alongside Milan and Sexton, Grace Warner, Egan Wint, Pat Fava and Jaylen Hanson — winners and runners-up of past competitions — will all be returning for this year’s event.
"Winter in Minnesota is an exciting time to explore the outdoors, and we're thrilled to welcome Red Bull Heavy Metal back to St. Paul," Mayor Carter said about the upcoming competition. "The energy from this world-class event kicks off what will be a year full of fun and celebration across our capital city."
This year’s event will open up the competition to the public in a Last Chance Qualified, held at Buck Hill in Burnsville.
Red Bull Heavy Metal will open its gates to spectators at 1 p.m., and the competition will run from 2 to 5 p.m. The event is free and a video recapping the competitions will be posted on the event’s website afterwards.

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced a new partnership with a local TV station to broadcast five games this season, marking the team's return to free over-the-air television for first time since 2012.
The Minnesota Timberwolves will broadcast five games on KARE-11 this season, marking the team's return to free over-the-air television for first time since 2012.
The broadcasts are part of a larger effort by the Timberwolves to grow its fan base. The broadcasts, which will be aired simultaneously on KARE-11 and FanDuel Sports Network, will allow an additional 1.5 million households to watch the five games, according to a news release announcing the partnership.
"The idea is really just about reach and distribution," said Ryan Tanke, the organization's chief operating officer. "Our No. 1 business priority is to double our fan base over these next five years, and this just brings Timberwolves basketball to more households."
The games are made available for local over-the-air distribution as part of the NBA’s agreement with Diamond Sports Group, the owner of FanDuel Sports Network North (former Bally Sports Network), which allows NBA teams to simulcast up to five games this season.
The Timberwolves have not aired on KARE since a nine-year run from 1992-93 to 2001. The channel will air FanDuel Sports Network’s production of the games, including “Wolves Live” before and after every game. The Tegna-owned station is an NBC affiliate, which recently signed a media rights deal with the NBA to broadcast games starting in the 2025-2026 season.
“KARE-11 is proud to bring this slate of Timberwolves games to fans in Minnesota and NW Wisconsin,” said Doug Wieder, president and general manager the station, in a statement. “Local sports are in our DNA, and we’re thrilled to offer these games for free to more Wolves fans in more homes than ever before.”
The games:
The organization will remain with Diamond Sports Group for at least the remainder of the season. Tanke, who noted the Wolves rank among the top in the NBA for views and streams of games, said no decisions have been made on a broadcast partner for next season.
"This is really just a five-game beta test, nothing more at this point, ... just to see what type of reach and distribution could look like for us," he said.
The Wolves are also doing well when it comes to in-person viewership, selling out their last 75 home games. The team is also No. 10 in the NBA in average attendance, No. 8 in the NBA in average tickets sold per game, and its 18% year-over-year growth in tickets sold per game is the largest increase in the NBA this season.

St. Paul Dayton’s display cherished for characters
For many Minnesotans the Christmas shows at Dayton’s department store were a staple of their holiday season. Now, a homeowner in St. Paul's Highland Park neighborhood is breathing new life into some classic characters. FOX 9’s Maury Glover takes us live around the display.
The Brief
ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - John Pihaly's porch on Saunders Avenue in St Paul is a throwback to another era.
Christmas spirit
"It's fantastic. We've had a lot of visitors, young and old, like to come out here to visit with them and hear their stories and share their memories. It's been a lot of fun this year," said Pihaly.
FOX 9 first met Pihaly three years ago, when he built a Santa's Village using nine animatronic characters from the old Christmas shows in the 8th floor auditorium at the Dayton's Department store in downtown Minneapolis.
The figurines had been forgotten in an old storage room when the store closed back in 2017, until he stumbled across them at a store fixture business in Minneapolis.
"Great opportunity to get people in the holiday spirit, relive the memories of Dayton’s and share in the Christmas spirit," said Pihaly.
New holiday, new displays
This year, Pihaly closed his front porch to create six different vignettes with 30 figurines, each depicting a day in the life of an elf from Dayton's last Christmas show.
Pihaly refurbished all the characters himself, using new technology to restore the broken hands and feet from the pieces from the past.
"We were able to find a way to 3D scan a good hand and then make a mirror image of it, and then 3D print an exact replica painted to match the exact way that it was edited," said Pihaly.
Pihaly's expanded holiday display has drawn a larger number of visitors feeling nostalgic about Christmases gone by.
"I think it’s entertaining. I could stand there for a long time if it was a little warmer," said Pihaly.
He hopes keeping the legacy of the Dayton's elves alive will become a holiday tradition of its own.
"It's just been a fantastic experience. Really fun. Very rewarding," said Pihaly.
The display will be lit from 5 to 9 p.m. through Christmas Day at 1887 Saunders Avenue in St Paul.
