With numerous weather alerts underway, including in Monroe County, a state of emergency was issued for the areas expected to be most heavily hit, schools have shuttered for the day and snow and high winds sparked travel restrictions on roads, including a portion of the New York state Thruway.
The snowiest part of New York is in Erie County, where snow is falling at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour, said Meteorologist Jim Mitchell of the National Weather Service in Buffalo. So far, 30 inches of snow fell in Orchard Park and 28.6 inches was tallied in Hamburg and another 25 inches of snow measured in Attica, Wyoming County.

Lake effect snow warnings in effect for NY
Lake effect snow warnings are in effect through Friday in several counties east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Residents should prepare for significant snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions, according to the Weather Service.
Counties south of Buffalo - Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, southern Erie and Wyoming counties - are expected to see 2 to 3 feet of snow by midday Friday, according to the Weather Service. And Owego, Jefferson and Lewis counties are predicted to see 2 to 3 feet of snow through Friday evening.
Parts of Erie and Genesee county are predicted to see 10 to 20 inches by midday Friday.
All areas are expected to see wind gusts up to 40 mph, which will create hazardous travel conditions with blowing and drifting snow.
Winter weather advisories issued in New York
The Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for several other counties in upstate New York, including Livingston County - where 4 to 7 inches of snow is expected by early Friday morning. Up to 6 inches of snow is predicted in Ontario County as well.
In Monroe County, a winter weather advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday. With more than 3 inches already on the ground at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport as of 7 a.m. Thursday, another 2 to 4 inches is expected to fall before the snow wanes by the afternoon, Mitchell said. The brunt of the south is expected to fall in the southern part of the county, into and including the City of Rochester, Brighton and Fairport, he said.

Bonita Ruth Florack, known as Bonnie Wilson, passed away on November 4th, 2024, at her home in East Rochester, NY. Bonnie, 73, was a beloved member of her community and family, remembered for her warm personality and dedication to her loved ones.
Born in New York City to Joseph and Alice Florack, Bonnie moved to Rochester, NY, where she earned her degree from Bryant and Stratton College. She worked for many years in the insurance industry and later spent 23 years as a laundromat attendant at Whiter Wash Laundromat, where she formed lasting friendships with customers and coworkers alike.
Bonnie cherished her family above all else. She loved the holidays and enjoyed spending time with her children, playing cards, working on puzzles, and crafting. She was known for sitting outside on her porch, greeting passing cars with a wave. Bonnie was deeply devoted to her family, including her loving husband of 47 years, Robert F. Wilson, Sr., and her children, Lisa Keech, Christine Keech (Jerry Kielon), and Ernest Florack. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Cody Keech, Autumn Keech (Kaitlin Brightman), Caleb Wilson, Keadin Maher, Elora Wilson, and Abigail Kielon.
