Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

BROOKINGS — South Dakota State got its first-ever win over the Montana Grizzlies back in January, with a 23-3 triumph in the FCS national championship game.

Now in the same calendar year, another first involving Montana: the Grizzlies debut trip to Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

The Griz come to Brookings on Saturday for the second round of the FCS playoffs in what is the 10th meeting between the teams. Montana has been to Brookings before, but not since 1970, when both teams were in Division II. And until SDSU's win in Frisco, the Grizzlies led the all-time series 8-0.

The Jacks had little difficulty with Montana in the national championship game, holding them without a touchdown and pretty much shutting down an offense that had scored 115 points in the three playoff games prior to getting there. And this year's Griz appear to be a step down.

Zimmer: As FCS playoffs move to second round, national championship game rematch looms

It'll be Montana at South Dakota State on Saturday in Brookings

2d ago

·

By Matt Zimmer

While last year's squad had just one loss before the title tilt, Montana entered these playoffs with an 8-4 record and did not earn a top-8 seed and first round bye. They lost to North Dakota (a 5-7 team the Jacks beat 38-7) and Weber State (a team that went 4-8), and were beaten convincingly by No. 4 UC-Davis and No. 1 Montana State.

They advanced to the second round with a 41-27 win over Tennessee State last Saturday in Missoula. The Tigers are a solid team that was playing well coming into the tournament, but they're also a team that lost 52-3 to North Dakota State, and were it not for two punt return touchdowns by Grizzlies star return man Junior Bergen Tennessee State might be the team coming to Brookings on Saturday.

None of that necessarily means the Jacks are a sure thing to move on Saturday.

The Griz offense is an explosive one, averaging 34.5 points with good balance at just over 200 yards rushing and passing per contest.

Quarterback Clifton McDowell bailed after last season but a few key offensive weapons are back, notably running back Eli Gillman and receiver Bergen, who's nothing short of the most-explosive special teams weapon in the country and has 46 catches on offense, too.

And there's something to be said for history. Montana has won two national championships (1995, 2001) and been runner-up six times. They're in the playoffs for the fourth straight year and 19th time since the turn of the century.

Still, they'll be going up against easily their biggest test against the SDSU defense. And on the other side of the ball, a Jackrabbit offense that finished the regular season strong will be facing a Griz defense that's been fairly pedestrian, allowing 25 points and more than 350 yards per game.

Will there be a big crowd? The Jacks have played in front of more than 20,000 fans in Missoula, but SDSU's smaller playoff crowds have been well-documented. After a week of frigid cold Saturday's forecast calls for balmy temps in the 40s. Students are granted free admission and general admission tickets can be had for $10.

With the FCS field having lost many of its top teams over the last few years, SDSU and Montana are two of just a handful of true power programs still left in their class, making this an especially high-profile matchup for the second round.

"This is a really good football team with a lot of skilled players," said Jacks coach Jimmy Rogers. "This will be a tough matchup for us and we're excited to hopefully fill the stadium for it."

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Schwan’s Company broke ground on Wednesday on a new 700,000-square-foot food production facility in northwest Sioux Falls.

Mayor Paul TenHaken and Governor Kristi Noem joined company leaders for a special ceremony.

The project was announced three years ago, but after plenty of work behind the scenes, it reached shovels in the ground at Foundation Park.

All parties were excited to finally move forward with this venture.

“It’s a six-year journey to be here standing in front of you today at a shovels-in event. It feels absolutely fantastic,” CEO of CJ Schwan’s Brian Schiegg said to the crowd.

It was all smiles at the future site of CJ Schwan’s food production facility in Sioux Falls. Conversations began amidst the pandemic and plans became official three years ago.

The first big milestone of the project has been a long time coming.

“I can’t say thanks enough to Dimitrios [Smyrnios, former CEO] and now passing the baton to Brian [Schiegg] and the other leaders at Schwan’s for taking a leap on South Dakota and investing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota,” Mayor TenHaken said.

Construction will begin early next spring and will be completed in 2027.

Tenhaken and Gov. Noem emphasized the economic impact that this new facility will bring the city and the state, including bringing nearly 700 jobs.

“When it’s done it is going to be one of the most state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and food processing facilities in the world and we’re proud to have that here in Sioux Falls,” TenHaken said.

Gov. Noem said that during meetings and throughout the communications she had with CJ Foods and Schwan’s, they kept their word and always showed integrity.

Noem showed her appreciation by giving the CEOs of CJ Foods and CJ Schwan‘s, along with former Schwan’s CEO Dimitrios Smyrnios, challenge coins from her office.

“I am just so excited about the fact that there are companies that exist that have set this kind of example for how we do business. I think it represents what the culture of South Dakota is, what I hope the culture of America is and what our partnership is with Korea as well,” Noem said. “It’s a billion dollars worth of investment. It’s a game-changer for the state of South Dakota.”

“Projects of this scope don’t come together without partnership between private and public and I think this is just a shining example of that that I’m excited here to share today,” Schiegg said.

The new facility will specialize in the production of its frozen Asian food line, including egg rolls and steamed dumplings for the Bibigo brand.

The company said that Bibigo has quickly become the number one Asian food brand in the United States and the project in Sioux Falls came out of a need for more production capacity.

“Thank you for the unwavering support, really making us feel welcomed into the community. We’re thrilled to be able to call Sioux Falls part of our home now and to be part of that and we look forward to contributing to the continued economic success and economic development of this state going forward. To support that growth and to be able to invest in new capacity like this and we’ve invested in other facilities as well, I mean, this is truly an exciting time for us,” said CJ Foods CEO Minsok Pak.

TenHaken also made sure to credit the work put into making Foundation Park a reality and attracting business to the city.

“We are here because of the vision of a bunch of community leaders who said, ‘We need a big development park and we’re going to call it Foundation Park and we’re going to build it and hope they come.’ This was a barren place for quite a few years and now we’re almost out of land and we’re talking about Foundation Park 2 and it’s because of the leaders at our Development Foundation and the community leaders who are still on that board,” TenHaken said.

Governor Noem and Mayor TenHaken said that leadership throughout the pandemic, lower taxes, fewer regulations and lower unemployment have helped make South Dakota an attractive place for businesses, as was the case here.

Multi-Unit Papa Murphy’s Franchise Gears Up for Sixth Store Opening in Sioux Falls

Tom Henderson’s journey into franchising started when Papa Murphy’s, the largest take 'n' bake pizza brand in the United States, opened a new shop in his neighborhood. Deciding he had to try it for himself, Henderson was blown away — not only by the pizza, but also by the long lines of happy customers around the block. A few days later, a serendipitous meeting with a member of the Papa Murphy’s team started Henderson down his entrepreneur path. With a background in the mattress industry and a love for customer service sparked by a college internship at Walt Disney World, he transitioned into the world of pizza.

Since opening his first Papa Murphy’s store in 1998, Henderson has grown his franchise to six locations in the Sioux Falls area, with a new store opening in November 2024.

1851 Franchise spoke with Henderson to learn more about his 20-year history with Papa Murphy’s, his plans for the future and more.

1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?

Tom Henderson: Before Papa Murphy’s, I was in the mattress world, working in Denver. I always knew I wanted to do something on my own. It’s kind of a funny story — a Papa Murphy’s opened in my neighborhood, and I got one of their big 16-inch pizzas. It was one of the best I’d ever had, and there was a line out the door. That caught my attention. A few days later, I met a guy who was part of the expansion team for Papa Murphy’s. That’s how it all started — I worked in his store on weekends to see if the business was the right fit for me.

1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?

Henderson: I’d been around businesses enough to know that I wanted a system to follow. Franchising offers that structure, and it’s important to have that when you’re starting out.

1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?

Henderson: Papa Murphy’s is a lot simpler than other restaurants because we don’t have big ovens and we don’t deliver. Everything is done in the store fresh — we make the dough daily, buy fresh vegetables and shred our own cheese. That commitment to quality really appealed to me, and I knew the brand stood behind it.

1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business?

Henderson: I opened my first store in 1998, and the next year I opened two more in Sioux Falls. In 2016, I opened two more, and despite the challenges of COVID in 2020, I kicked growth into gear again by 2022. Now we’re getting ready to open another store soon. The thing I love most about this franchise is working with customers every day. I did an internship at Walt Disney World in college, which sparked my love of customer service, and I enjoy the excitement that comes with running my own business.

1851: What are your plans for growth?

Henderson: We plan to keep growing. Sioux Falls is really expanding, and we’re adapting by opening locations with pick-up windows to meet customer demand.

1851: What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?

Henderson: One of the reasons Papa Murphy’s is growing right now is because COVID changed the world. Our online orders jumped from 7% to over 40%, and our speed of service has improved dramatically. It’s been a game-changer for us.

1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?

Henderson: If you’re looking for a franchise, I’d recommend one with a national presence — that way, you have the backing of national advertising. We went a long time before we could afford TV ads, and smaller franchises without that reach can leave you on your own. Having that support is key.
