WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Insurance claims are beginning to pile up after Hurricane Helene left a path of destruction in multiple states.
In Florida, state data shows close to 40,000 claims filed and damages totaling $434 million.
Having confidence in insurers to pay claims is something Doug Quinn is skeptical about.
"There is a lot going on in the insurance industry that nobody is talking about," Quinn said at WPTV's Coverage Collapse Town Hall in September.

Quinn is the executive director of the American Policyholder Association, an organization he founded after his home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.
"I got 4 feet of water, and my home ended up being totaled," Quinn told WPTV senior reporter Matt Sczesny. "My insurance company hired an engineering firm that created a fraudulent report to say that damage was already there."
Quinn said that practice is still happening too many times, even in Florida where two years after Hurricane Ian nearly 200,000 claims have been closed without any claims, a number that he said is too high.
"There's no segment of the market that is immune from fraud," Quinn said.
"When is the state of Florida going to start holding the insurance industry accountable for their actions," he asked during the town hall audience.
State Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City, who was on the panel for the town hall, answered quickly, saying there are currently 22 active investigations of insurers.
"I would disagree with you sir in that the insurance companies in Florida are highly regulated," Overdorf said.
Mark Friedlander of the Insurance Information Institute also sent us the following statement on the matter:
"The Florida property insurance industry is acting as a financial first responder to help its impacted customers recover from Hurricane Helene. The industry is in its best financial position in many years due to legislative reform passed in 2022 and 2023 and is well-capitalized to pay storm claims. If insurers do not follow state regulations regarding Helene claims processing, they will be held accountable by the Florida insurance commissioner and subject to sanctions."

More rain bands are expected Wednesday night across the Treasure Coast as Hurricane Helene is now forecast to become a Category 4 storm heading into Florida’s Big Bend area Thursday night.
Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties are forecast to be under what National Weather Service meteorologist Jessie Schaper said is marginal risk for increased tornado threats and slight risk of severe weather Thursday and Friday.
“Through the overnight we are anticipating additional rain bands to impact the Treasure Coast," Schaper said.
The powerful storm will bring an increased threat of tornadoes and waterspouts, a 10-20% chance of tropical storm-force winds, and possibly up to 4 inches of rain to the Treasure Coast, she said.
Tropical storm-force winds are expected to arrive on the Treasure Coast “give or take a couple of hours around 10 a.m. (Thursday),” Schaper said, and last into Thursday's nighttime hours.
“So probably about 12 hours we could see those tropical storm-force winds; mainly wind gusts for the Treasure Coast areas,” she said. Tropical storm winds are classified as between 39-73 mph.
Just after 8 p.m., National Weather Service meteorologist Brendan Schaper said the storm’s track remained unchanged.
“Overnight, there will continue to be these rain bands, and embedded within the rain can be some stronger wind gusts,” he said. “It looks like the amounts through sunrise, range anywhere from maybe 1500ths of an inch up to about a half an inch of rain, depending on if you get under one of those heavier showers.”
He warned residents to keep tuned to weather alerts in the event a tornado is forecasted.
“That's just something we'll be monitoring as we get closer to the storm's approach (Thursday),” he said.
Throughout Thursday, he said the region’s coastal areas will experience higher wind gusts than inland areas.
“If you're at the coast and you're closer to the water, which has less surface friction, the winds are going to be a little bit stronger and gustier," he said. "And right now, some of the forecast wind speeds, or wind gusts as we go into the day on Thursday, they could reach as high as 50 mph, maybe even a couple of gusts closer to 60.”
The Treasure Coast has been under a tropical storm warning since Tuesday night, meaning tropical storm conditions are likely here within the next 36 hours.
Helene became hurricane Wednesday morning
The storm was classified as a hurricane by the National Hurricane Center Wednesday at 11 a.m. while it traveled north at roughly 10 mph with 80 mph sustained winds in the Caribbean Sea near the Yucatan Peninsula and western Cuba.
The storm was expected to bring a potential for what was described as life-threatening storm surge across the entire west coast of the state, widespread damage and devastating hurricane-force winds across northern Florida and southern Georgia.
The National Hurricane Center in an 8 p.m. update said Helene has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph moving into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. It was located about 430 miles southwest of Tampa, moving 12 mph.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 345 miles.
Is Wednesday's rain related to Hurricane Helene?
Wednesday's rain is not directly associated with any outer band of the system, Meteorologist Melissa Watson said.

In the past seven days across the Treasure Coast, there's been 3.22 inches of rain in Vero Beach and 1.87 inches in Fort Pierce. In areas around Stuart in Martin County there's been from 1.94 inches up to 3.4 inches, said National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Will Ulrich.
Helene's expected impact on Treasure Coast
Along the Treasure Coast, the effects will most likely be seen in Indian River County, as the storm passes off Tampa Bay, which was the nearest point to the east central region on its path northward, Schaper said.
Sustained winds of 20-to-30 mph were considered likely with gusts up to 50 mph, which Schaper said are consistent with thunderstorms frequently experienced in the area.
Roughly 1 to 4 inches of rain is expected, but Schaper said there could be up to 6 inches of isolated rainfall.
“Today, portions of the Treasure Coast already received 1 to 2 inches, and then we have locally higher amounts of 6 inches, which could potentially impact the Treasure Coast,” she said. “And then by tomorrow night into Friday, things will be clearing up for us.”

The Army Corps of Engineers is not releasing any water from Lake Okeechobee or the C-44 Reservoir/STA into the St. Lucie River ahead of Helene, a spokesperson told TCPalm Wednesday.
Rainfall runoff from previous storms that drenched western Martin County homes and farms has been flowing through the St. Lucie Lock & Dam at a daily average rate of nearly 331 million gallons, “which is normal for this time of year,” she said.
The agency extended the boat lock hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. for as long as possible, but will close them before Helene makes landfall.
